King and Goffin Jukebox

I'll open with Maxine Brown's "Oh, No, Not My Baby." I like how how Maxine shouts her high notes, which is how Carol sang, making a virtue of her limitations. I imagine accidental elements like that from Carol's demos frequently made it onto the finished product.

And if you prefer the Family, and I understand why you might, here you go. (Some serious "Keith is such a tool" subtext going on with Laurie and Danny here.)

What really sells this is Mike Nesmith's passion.

Gentle, philosophical, not-too-weighty number about keeping things not-too-weighty.

So well-written, it's like nobody wrote it-- someone just thought it, and it was always there.

It was always a preposition with the Drifters. At least, when they hit their vein of gold circa 1963. It was that elusive over-thereness that was always within reach but never where they were at at the time.

"UP ON the Roof"
"UNDER the Boardwalk"
"Saturday Night AT the Movies"
"ON Broadway"
"AT the Club"

Physical/phychic places not quite elusive, but not quite sustainable either. Ephemeral youthful Shangri-Las. King and Goffin were right in the middle of that spirit.

Can you imagine getting a call in 1967 saying "Aretha likes the song --- she's gonna cut it next week and it's gonna be her next single"?

Either there's something happening with my speakers, or that's like an 80s dancefloor remix.

Mike was always looking off-set and making faces. I never appreciated him then but he cracks me up now.

My sister and I musta worn the grooves right off of this record....

Re: King and Goffin Jukebox

somewhere in our archives is a lengthy post where i defend The Monkees and their entire ouevre, and then challenge the Red Hot Chili Peppers in that music challenge contest we used to run. I think the Monkees lost, but it was close, and i think i made a good argument for them.

"I Can't Make It Alone," given some Motown stomp and western twang by Maria McKee:

Originally done by PJ Proby and covered with sweet understatement and gentle strings by Dusty Springfield

Being 8 years older and wiser, there's no way I take "Soul To Squeeze" over "Pleasant Valley Sunday".

Re: King and Goffin Jukebox

I hadn't looked in on this thread for a bit and coincidentally I've been on a Monkees kick. A friend saw them a few weeks ago and she said they were great & that started me. Mike was with em again and they did a nice tribute for Davey.

I see I did vote in that old thread but I'm surprised I didn't say any more about the group. I'm a big Monkees fan. And a fan of Mike Nesmiths solo stuff.

I was a fan of the show at the start, and as a result, the music. So the kick at this point is just about the show. I got a selection of episodes through torrents:The 16mm pre-pilot, the pilot, and about 8 episodes from season one (I think it said there were 31 episodes in S-01). I'm enjoying these and in reading about the group I have a new found respect. Read their Wiki-very interesting tale.

I found out many things I didn't know about them.
I don't recall ever seeing Head but I'll find out soon cuz thats next on my kick-list.

I love strong women. I love a strong woman. I'm trying to raise a strong woman.

But, damn, torch songs.

Re: King and Goffin Jukebox

as far as altered states go, i was thinking maybe Colorado.

I like ALTERED STATES... typical Ken Russell over-the-top excessiveness. Screenwriter Paddy Chayevsky (who wrote the novel it was based on, too) was furious and had his name taken off the film when he saw that Russell had the actors reciting his dialogue with such speed and a sort of matter-of-factness that it seemed to be mocking the script's ponderous, purplish, self-serious prose. So the screenplay is credited to "Sydney Aaron" (Chayevsky's 1st and middle names). But kudos to Russell, because the story is so ludicrous and the dialogue so comically self-serious that it required Russell's pyrotechnics to achieve an entertaining level of silliness. The movie is an acid trip and William Hurt and Blair Brown were a lot of fun.

Speaking of altered states... I think it would have been more interesting hearing an older, more-rough-around-the-edges Whitney Houston tackle this one.

The recently deceased Bobby Womack's interpretation of a King/Goffin standard:

Of course, Aretha Franklin's version is a song I can't help but sing along with every time I hear it.
