Classic Diners of the Northeast

For the most part, let's keep this to diners that are
traveling diners ... unless you happen to live by an
super-extraordinary classic ... never had a bad break-
fast or burger at the 84 in Fishkill, NY.

If you've often traveled on RTE 17 in NY and not eaten
here at least once, I don't believe you!

Have eaten here at least a dozen times on way to Mass
off of I-95... 3/4 thumbs up for breakfast.

The Americana Diner in East Windsor, NJ isn't what it used to be, but it's still very good overall -

Mastori's in Bordentown, NJ is fabulous. I chose the location for MK's Bar Mitzvah specifically to get Mastori's catering -

I miss the Candlelight in Commack, Long Island (it's still there, I'm not....) -

We've eaten at the Palace Diner in Poughkeepsie, and our son who attends Marist eats there often -

Re: Classic Diners of the Northeast

I hit the Coram Diner a couple of times out on Long Island traveling back from the ..wherever we were out there. The quantity was ridiculous. Felt like a standard chicken dish needed more than 1 chicken to prepare and it still came with like bread and soup and salad and a drink and a dessert and a side and a potato...

Stopped at it randomly the first time with friends because it was shiny and we equated shininess/gaudiness with quality. Any truth to that you think?

Silver Diner/Ruby's Diner, Schenectady. Long gone.

Re: Classic Diners of the Northeast

When I saw the thread title, I thought "Roscoe Diner".
I've passed the signs for the Rt-84 Diner many times, but have never gone there.
Wifey isn't a great diner fan, but when we go to one, its the Patterson Diner on rte 22, about 10 minutes north of Rt 84.
Not bad. But nothing to go out of your way for, either. In a food thread a few years aho, one of our posters mentioned a hot dog place on rt 22 with a cheesy miniature golf course behind it. The Patterson diner is north of that.

I don't know that the Coram Diner is still there. Must be something else now.

MF, what's the huge diner in the greater Princeton area? There's a bakery attached? We went there when visiting Sesame Place a few years ago and enjoyed it.

Websitestill exists.

"INCLUDES COMPLIMENTARY GLASS OF WINE, CUP OF SOUP,
TOSSED OR GREEK SALAD AND CAKE OF THE DAY"

So not only soup AND salad, but wine and cake too.

The Tilt'n Diner (exit 20 of I-93) is always a nice stop when traveling to and from the Lakes Region or White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Re: Classic Diners of the Northeast

Soupy forgot to mention that the Sycamore also features occasional retro nights (used to be on Friday, not sure now) when folks bring their souped up cars/ hot rods (not Kanehl) to the parking lot, eat in the cars, and hang out. Duck tail haircuts and black leather jackets are optional.
Holy Fonzie, Batman!

I like the incredibly buttery and tasty home made New England clam chowder.
The problem with the Sycamore is that its in Bethel, and not near any major highway. You would have to be going there just to go there, rather than go to it because you are passing by. I live about 5 miles away, and it takes me more than 15 minutes to get there.

Re: Classic Diners of the Northeast

I have enjoyed many a meal at the "World Famous" Roscoe Diner along route 17, headed to/from college as a younger guy.

These were our favorite haunts growing up, all a stone's throw from exits 18 (New Paltz) and 19 (Kingston) on the New York State Thruway.

1. The Plaza Diner, New Paltz (try the pizza burger):

2. The College Diner, New Paltz (best for omelettes):

3. Dietz Stadium Diner, Kingston (breakfast food):

I've probably been by it dozens of times and I don't remember it looking like that.
