IGT 07/21 -- Mets at Mariners

NY Mets at Seattle
When: 10:10 PM ET, Monday, July 21, 2014
Where: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets attempt to wake up their bats when they visit the Seattle Mariners for the opener of their three-game series Monday. New York was held to just five hits in a shutout loss at San Diego on Saturday and didn't record one the following day until All-Star Daniel Murphy doubled with two out in the eighth inning of a 2-1 defeat. Star third baseman David Wright on Monday will celebrate the 10th anniversary of his major-league debut with the Mets, who won nine of 11 prior to their offensively challenged weekend.

Seattle, which has a 1 1/2-game lead over Toronto and the New York Yankees for the second American League wild-card spot, will be glad to be home after a three-game series at Los Angeles in which it dropped two of three while playing a total of 37 innings. The Mariners suffered a 3-2 loss in 16 frames on Friday before winning in 12 by an identical score the following night. They were on their way to victory in the rubber match before the Angels reached Fernando Rodney for two runs in the ninth, denying the All-Star closer his 200th career save while resulting in the Seattle's sixth loss in nine contests.

TV:
10:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets LH Jon Niese (5-4, 2.96 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Roenis Elias (7-8, 4.54)

Niese is expected to be activated from the disabled list, where he's resided since July 5 due to a strained left shoulder. The 27-year-old posted back-to-back victories before exiting his start against Texas on July 4 with what was described as a lower back contusion after being hit with a line drive by the third batter of the game. Niese, who has yet to allow more than three earned runs this season, has never faced Seattle.

Elias has had 11 days to recover from a three-start losing streak during which he surrendered 17 runs over 14 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old Cuban rookie lasted only 3 1/3 frames against Minnesota on July 9 as he was tagged for seven runs - six earned - and seven hits. Elias has not fared well at home during his first season with Seattle, going 2-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 10 outings.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mariners All-Star 2B Robinson Cano is expected to return to the lineup after requesting Sunday off due to ongoing hamstring problems.
2. Mets manager Terry Collins stated OF Bobby Abreu would serve as the team's designated hitter in the final two games of the series.
3. Seattle's bullpen logged 16 1/3 innings during the marathon series against the Angels.

Finally, baseball. I've been passing the time watching "Jurassic Park" on AMC. Was there ever a more doomed movie character than Dennis Nedry (played by Wayne Knight AKA "Newman")?

The game so far: Too much green. Not enough blue.

Hmm, how did Dave not get the guy at first in the first place? Heads up play Soup.

As per the SNY broadcast, Lagares is hitting .380 against lefties this year.

So why is he hitting eighth tonight?

Re: IGT 07/21 -- Mets at Mariners

A lot of solid pitching that the team is running into, and you've got to play clean ball and execute when you run into that. You just can't waste your few opportunities.

At least in theory. Last night, it was... you just can't waste your many opportunities, which are available to you every inning.

I'm wondering if The Pitchers-Fall-Down Game will become etched in history.

Re: IGT 07/21 -- Mets at Mariners

Broadly sated, execution has been the issue all year long for this team and as much as the club appears devoted to Terry, someone ought to answer for it.

Re: IGT 07/21 -- Mets at Mariners

The problem last night was more plain old shitty hitting than anything else.
I mean nine hits is OK, but all were singles (and some pretty cheap ones among them) and by managing to pull off the old 'one per inning' oddity--exactly one hit in each inning but never more than one--most of those runners never advanced beyond 1st base.

And Johnny C. Johnson is right about Howard Johnson being right!

I was highly distressed about Josh Edigin's explanation of "That's the way I fall off the mound."

No matter what your motion, every pitcher is responsible for getting his back foot forward to square his hips and bring his body and into fielding position. If you can't do it, and you're late, and the ball gets by you a little and you've got to do some weird move like pivot on your back foot and turn your back to the hitter on a tapper, that's just not an option. A ball hit that softly and you still can't get into position? Because only being able to field balls hit to the third-base side of the rubber, because that's just the way you fall, is not acceptable.

That's the sort of execution failure you risk when you come to depend on AAAA types on your roster, but it's also the type of execution failures Terry and his staff have to answer for. How strange that Terry came to the team with a rep of a heartles and stern taskmaster, and he has actually come to seem ineffectual in this regard.

And yeah, this post speaks more to the night before last, but still. Advancing stray runners is execution, too.

One could reasonably expect the opposite, besides-- that the one thing that AAAA types can certainly get right is execution-- couldn't one?

Re: IGT 07/21 -- Mets at Mariners

I don't think so.

There's a philosophy in baseball that the difference between the Major Leaguer and the guy who does fine in the minors but can't crack the bigs isn't one of of physical talent but of the discipline to execute. (This assumes that DtE isn't in itself a physical talent, but perhaps a mental/emotional one.) The notion goes that while there are supremely gifted MLBers who eclipse everybody else in talent, the majority simply do things "right" 99% of the time, while the AAAA-er does things right 90% of the time.

Now, a philosophy is just a philosophy, but it gets spouted a lot, as arbitrary as those numbers may seem. Suffice to say that two Mets pitchers looked uncomfortably out of place fielding balls on a big league mound.
