Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

Do you realize after this weekend series, we have Monday off? It's like this schedule was developed in a government momentum-dampening laboratory. "Hey the Mets are always strong at the break, let's give them five days off in eight with their only series against a team full of brutal pitchers! YEAH! Even if they win the series, they'll come out of it in a batting slump!"

"Let's make it in California, too! They'll be drunk and jetlagged. It'll be awesome! <>"

Anymuch, the Pads have had a struggling first half, with injuries and underperformance undermining their best offensive plans. They had two All-Stars --- starter Tyson Ross and closer Huston Street --- to our one, but both their names sound like their parents accepted a sponsorship deal from a major corporation. And that's just not the Padre Way.

So, how about them Padres?

Catcher: The Padres main catcher is Yasmani Grandal. Yas is a Cuban dude, but he went to HS in the US, so one shouldn't necessarily associate him with those recent mutants like Puig and Cespedes who are making the game seems stupid. Yes, one should judge him on his own track record. And that track record includes a big beefy frame and a 50-game suspension for elevated testosterone levels.

[fimg=400]http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Yasmani+Grandal+San+Diego+Padres+Photo+Day+dylGYaG28_Al.jpg[/fimg]

(Looks like and outline of Cuba on his left wrist.)

Grandal homered from both sides of the plate in his first MLB start. The only dude to pull off that trick, and with his meaty build, his switch-hittiness, his low batting averages, his puncher's power, and his roidiness, he's pretty much Todd Hundley before his All-Star peak. Between his suspension and his name turning up in the records of a certain lab in Miami, he's perhaps not a good bet to ever find that peak.

But like young Todd, the defense has always been there. He's had his share of dings though --- a knee injury (ACL and MCL) ended his season last year and a hand injury has damped him this year. Grandal is going .210 / .299 / .364 // .663 this season in 70 games. The Padres hope he's more than that when healthy, but it's his second straight year hitting with a banjo bat, so that may be all there is.

Puerto Rican Rene Rivera backs Grandal up, and he's pretty much their uglier version of Anthony Recker. I mean we're all --- and by all, I meant to say mankind --- are uglier versions of Anthony Recker, but this guy is a minor league vet who brings defense and puncher's power, and like with Recker earlier in the season, that looked modestly better than waiting for the prospect to find himself. Rivera comes into the game at: .219 / .277 / .423 // .700.

[fimg=300]http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Rene+Rivera+San+Diego+Padres+Photo+Day+oLaY5OgWpTrl.jpg[/fimg]

(Long sleeves. Can't see what's on his wrist.)

Rivera was named the Padres' opening day catcher for 2014 and serves as Andrew Cashner's personal catcher. "Wtf is Andrew Cashner and why does he get a personal catcher?" you may ask. Well you may. But Cashner is disabling on the list and will be unlikely to provide any answers during this series. But man, I like opponents with sub-.300 on-base averages.

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

El primero basemano de los Padres is yonder Alonso.

(Actually, wait. I'm getting word that his name is Yonder. Thought his name is Alonso and he was just standing far away.)

(And actually, wait again. Looks like Alonso IS yonder, as he's on the DL.)

Their current first baseman is someone named Tommy Medica, but he hasn't played since LAST Thursday due to groin tightness. So basically, Mets, just hit ground balls to the right side, because there won't be anyone there to field them.

Well, that was brief, and delightfully surreal. "Firstbasemano"?

Anybody for seconds of pleasure?

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

The good news is that second sacker Jedd Gyorko, who's been out since June with plantar fascitis, may be back in a week or two for these guys. The bad news is, Jedd Gyorko may be back in a week or two. Whether it's been due primarily or just partially to the injury, he's been sucking since season's outset like a beer fan on a Stone Brewery limited-seasonal-release (-1.2 fWAR in just about 200 PAs).

Manning the sack instead is some other young jerk-o: Jace Peterson, who's been an organizational All-Star for the God-Daddies for a couple of seasons now despite not making any top-100 lists in that time. At the minor league level, he's done nothing but perform (.321/.420/.482, w/14.5% BB-rate and 15.3% K-rate in 163 PAs-- and solid-to-good defense-- at AA and AAA over the past two years); at the major-league level, so far, he's done things very much "up to" Gyorko's "considerable" "standards" (.100/.135/.100 in 54 PAs).

Who's minding the fire in the hole?

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

2011. 2002. 1999.

Only three seasons in which the Mets have won the majority of their games in San Diego over the past quarter-century. They also did it in 1969, 1975, 1977 and 1985-1988.

10 out of 45. So maybe make a little history maybe this weekend?

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

The Padres have been so anonymous lately that I had to check to see if we had even played them this year ... turns out we did, taking two of three from them at CitiField in mid-June.

so they were playing Alexi Amarista at 2nd for a while (OK, NOW I remember the Padres visit to NY because I made a joke connecting Amarista to Elton John's Amoreena) while Gyorko was on the DL but they recently slid him over to SS because incumbent SS Evreth Cabrera is also on the DL ...

Jace Peterson just resurfaced after playing some 2B in June so I dont know who SD plans to throws out there.
Most recently it's been Brooks Conrad, a name vaguely familiar but I still had to look it up: he was a part-timer for the Braves for a few years (also Oakland, Milwaukee & Tampa) but hadn't been in the ML since 2012 until his recent call-up. Is 2-for-24 w/the Pads
Also filling in is Irving Falu - a 31 y/o Puerto Rican (named 'Irving' ... Really?) by way of Community College in Iowa with previous cups of coffee in KC & Milwaukee who is 3-for-20 with the Pads... so let's just say that Muffy's bat gives us an edge here.

Grandal, btw, has been playing some 1st base in Alonso's absence.

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

X-Rockie Seth Smith, whom I think may have hit big home run off us at least once, has been their best hitter this year and plays LF mostly.

Lefthanded hitter with 20-homer powa, OPS+ing at 157 which is like a typo on this team.

Other outfielders are Cameron Maybin (more like Cameron DUSTBIN, am I right people?!??) and Chris Denorfia withhelp from Will Venable, whose Venability is way down this year.

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

That leaves only 3rd base where Chase Headley -- not to be confused with SI for Kids star Kedley Kase [fimg=170]http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/FHSart/sc013f66ef.jpg[/fimg] -- has been their man at the hot corner for eight consecutive years now.

But as time goes on, Headley's 2012 season [GG, AS, 5th in MVP voting] is increasingly taking on a 'one of these things is not like the others' shine to it as that one year is responsible for more than 1/3 of his career HRs, 115 of his 398 career RBIs (in no other single season did he reach 65), and a 100 point outlier in SLG Avg
After a 140 point drop in OPS in 2013 you'd think there'd be at least some regression to the norm, but instead this season has just seen another 100 point in sinkage.

Turns out that there's some karmic payback for taking ASG votes and a Gold Glove away from Sugarpants.

Anybubs want to report on the starting pitchers? The bullpen? The benchwarmers? Manager Bud Black and the state of his job security? Hey, whatever happened to Khalil Greene? Is he surfing and recording blank verse poetry over acid jazz now?

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

They're apparently close to trading Huston Street to the Angels, so the pen that starts the series might not be the one that ends it. Street has a 1.09 ERA and a 0.758 WHIP, while Joaquin Benoit backs him up with a 1.86 ERA and a 0.802 WHIP. That one-two punch would be downright frightening on a team that could score runs.

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

The Angels acquired San Diego closer Huston Street and a prospect for four minor-leaguers on Friday night, potentially ending Los Angeles' search for relievers less than two weeks before the trade deadline.
ESPN.com's Jim Bowden and FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported the news via Twitter.
Prospects Taylor Lindsey, R.J. Alvarez, Jose Rondon and another Minor Leaguer will head to San Diego while the Angels will also get right-hander Trevor Gott.

Gott-Damn!!

The four prospects heading to Sandy Eggo are the Angels' #1, #2, #4, and #8 prospects (acc to BA's just updated rankings) and I suspect we may even see #1 guy, 2B Taylor Lindsey (1st round pick 2010), go directly to the big club and into the starting lineup before the weekend is out.

Re: Conozca sus padres, 7/18-21

Nice stretch by Tejada on that bunt play. Terrible slide by Rivera, whose lead foot looked like it reached the bag ahead of the throw, but went over it without touching it.
