Re: Eye for All-Star Talent (Immediate Veteran Payoff Quiz)

BTW, good job on Viola, who became a Met in 1989 but after that year's ASG. His first Met-eligible midsummer classic was 1990.

Also BTW, Mays and Piazza wasted no time becoming Met All-Stars, joining the club in May, making it to the big show in July, respectively, in 1972 and 1998.

Re: Eye for All-Star Talent (Immediate Veteran Payoff Quiz)

I was going to guess Keef but he wouldn't have fit between Viola and LoDuca. And as I checked it, he only made it to five ASGs.

Re: Eye for All-Star Talent (Immediate Veteran Payoff Quiz)

Interesting. Beltran was relatively pedestrian his first year with the Mets, and stellar (when on the field) thereafter.

Gilkey was stellar his first year, got a nice contract and was almost never good again.

Re: Eye for All-Star Talent (Immediate Veteran Payoff Quiz)

Beltran, I thought, rode the wave of publicity to that first ASG selection, elected to start in 2005 despite getting off an a blah foot as a Met. Between his big postseason in 2004 and his enormous free agent contract, fans couldn't help but punch his ticket.

I remember being surprised Lance made it over Bernard in 1996.
