Division Rivals 2014: The Atlanta Braves

Wow, we never did one of these apparently.

Never too late to start. At least it isn't until 2015, I would guess.

And so we break into your regularly scheduled programming to announce that... Dan Uggla has been unconditionally released by the Atlanta Braves. Many of you might well feel privileged to have witnessed his last appearance in a Braves uniform --- and possibly any MLB uniform --- when he struck out on a full-count pitch last Tuesday evening, pinch-hitting against Jacob deGrom. He shouldn't feel embarrassed, at least, not with regard to that particular trip to the plate, as he was one of 11 Jacobian victims in the 8-3 Mets victory.

All told, the Braves got -1.2 WAR out of Uggla in return for a $61,146,942 investment, including what they will be paying him to fish, hunt, and golf next season. An absolutely Bayvian return.

I'm outa here!

It's really incredible how he completely fell off the table.

2010: .287/.369/.508 with 33 home runs, 131 OPS+, finished 17th in the MVP voting
--signs contract with Atlanta--
2011: .233/.311/.453 with 36 home runs in 161 games, 107 OPS+
2012: .220/.348/.384 with 19 home runs, led the NL in walks with 94, made the all-star team, 98 OPS+
2013: .179/.309/.362 with 22 home runs in 136 games, 84 OPS+
2014: .162/.241/.231 in 130 AB.

2 for 25 in May, 1 for 14 in June, 0 for 2 with 2 Ks (both against the Mets) in July.

Expanded MLB drug testing in 2012, again in 2013, and once more in 2014. Just speculation folks. Just speculation.

We did, just under an assumed name

Uggla, if you recall, had been suspended for a game just prior to the ASB. G, K & R were speculating whether that was going to be just a one day thing or something more substantial.
More substantial seems like the winner here, although I suppose it's possible that this was strictly a performance based thing that was bound to happen sooner or later.
Amazing how Atlanta minor leaguers just always seem to pop up where & when they need them. As far as I know they have no other position prospects on the horizon, but the one they did have was a 2nd baseman and it was a 2nd baseman that they needed.

That was my thought too, honestly.

Dan Uggla is a minor Giant in addition to being a minor giant.
