acid reflux?

Anybody have any suggestions?

It's driving me insane. The doctors are clueless, drugs don't work. so i've done all the reading and i'm doing everything they tell me to do: I'm not eating late (i'm hardly eating much at all) and taking long walks after dinner. I'm drinking lots of water, I'm chewing gum, I'm sleeping with a wedge elevating my head. I've changed my diet radically and am starting to lose weight, but it'll be 6 months (at least) before i'm down to a healthy weight. I'm eating apples, bananas, almonds, fat-free yogurt, oatmeal, rice, salads with almost no dressing, skinless chicken, turkey burgers, fish, and veggies (no onions, garlic, tomatoes, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, pepper).

But every night my throat is burning, and that awful burning taste goes up into my mouth, and nothing makes it go away. nothing. and i have to take Klonipin to sleep, and that's not a good thing.

Re: acid reflux?

Bad news: milk and water helped on occasion, but weight loss-- significant, Oprah-type weight loss-- is the only thing that worked on my acid reflux with any real efficacy.

Good news: dropping the poundage really worked-- I haven't had any acid reflux in over a year (even with a few three-bourbon nights or late-night meals mixed in there).

Yeah, reflux is like an early warning system with me. I hit a certain weight threshold and bam! But it reminds me to get back down and fast.

You're not pregnant right?

I only get this mildly (and un-diagnosed. Do you have a diagnosis or are they just treating what they assume it is based on symptoms?) so dunno if any of my theories would work. Ice cream (milk, cheese) usually help for me. And the water works for me, in the sense that I notice it when i'm dehydrated and drinking water tends to dillute the acid/clear it up after a while. And avoid burping at all costs. I've also noticed that despite beer and alcohol supposedly being bad (and the burn perhaps feeling similar?) they've never bothered me.

probiotics?

Maybe fasting? It sounds like everything is bothering you, so even like drinking water is stirring up the acid and it needs time to catch up? Or perhaps eating constantly, but very small portions, to give the acid something to do besides rise?

Just my thoughts. Weight loss and general healthiness do tend to go a long way for most things. Natural immune system and all that. I should probably take that advice and the occasional acid burn as a warning sign myself.

Re: acid reflux?

If I'm remembering correctly (and this is from a zillion years ago, so I'm not sure), I think that caffeine was a factor in my grandmother's acid reflux.

Feel better!

OE - It sounds as if you have most of this covered, but WebMD offers some suggestions.

Re: acid reflux?

The nexium and diet change seems to have calmed things down for now. But i still have this constant "lump-in-the-throat" feeling, and it just won't go away, and it's making me a little bit crazy, and there doesn't seem to be anything that relieves it.

I'm down nearly 20 pounds, which is good. But i don't recommend this condition as a dietary aid.
