Crossroads!

I feel like the next month or two is going to define my
life. I was so lucky, used up like twelve of my nine lives
up until now.

I had a great weekend with old friends, hung out Fri/Sat/
and Sun.

I was so depressed this morning ... then at ten o'clock got
an uplifting call about another dream job ... second one put
in my face in the last month or so.

First one, like this one, is unadvertised. Like they say, it's
not what you know sometimes but who you know. I'm a mess.

Not sure I can deal with another disappointment.

When you find a fork in the road, take it.

Good luck.

I feel like the economy must be getting better because someone called up to offer *me* a job last week ... and I probably won't take it.

I only get recruiters and not 'dream jobs' (I wouldn't be offered those) and I stopped searching after I took this job in November, but my opinion was that the economy, at least tech jobs, were picking up somewhat.

You're not currently working shining shoes, are you?

Re: Crossroads!

I've come to a similar crossroads. I've been with my current employer for almost exactly three years and it's had its share of ups and downs, but for most of 2014 it's been a gauntlet. Not because I don't like being a Linux adminstrator/MySQL DB admin but because my company insists on saddling me with non-technical, administrative tasks. They also have a persistent knack for give me the least amount of time to complete the longest/hardest projects. I don't like having my name attached with subpar efforts due to time constraints and circumstances outside of my control.

And then, magically, on a day a week ago that was proving itself to be just dreadful, for those above exact reasons, a buddy of mine texted me about an opportunity at his workplace and I applied. The text came to me, quite literally, as someone was handing me yet another steaming pile of tasking.

So I officially applied. I had a phone interview this afternoon that went well (though it was more of a quiz of my technical knowledge than an interview to assess me as a person).

I'm optimistic. Some people would feel apprehensive about changing employers every 3-4 years but I think in my field it's not necessarily a negative. I get a raise (hopefully), a chance to learn new skills, and to reinvent myself once again. It's akin to coming out of a chrysalis.

I get 5-6 emails per day about border control jobs available
in Kentucky. I guess Ohio is more of a threat than I realized.

Re: Crossroads!

Got an independent contracting gig today with a good-
sized CPA firm. I will be doing stuff for their clients and
billing them for my services. I've been doing this for about
a year now on a smaller scale, this could be much more
significant if it works out.

Re: Crossroads!

Funny how things turn out sometimes.
Got an email this morning from the firm's president that I was
contracted by that they were terminated by client early yesterday
evening and it had nothing really to do with me and they will still use
me for other things in the future.
