When a tree falls in your driveway, it DOES make a sound

A loud one.

A squall came through last night around six, taking with it a 100-foot pine tree. It landed on my cars, after bouncing off the house.

Damage, luckily was minor. I lost two windows (basement and attic), a storm window, and a couple of bookcases (the books survived). Our new Hyundai seems undamaged. Our 1999 Saturn has a smashed rear window, a cracked front windshield, a smashed quarter panel and hood. It runs, but they may total it instead of paying for repairs (the appraiser hasn't shown up yet).

They patched the windows last night, and are finishing up on removing the tree right now.

Wow!

Sorry about the damage, but glad to hear that it wasn't worse.

Yowzers.

I worry about our gigantic pine trees sometimes.

Saw the pics on fb, glad damage was minimal.

And the worst part about the whole thing: pine makes lousy fire wood so it's not worth cutting it all up and saving the logs.

Some of those storms this past week were awesome.

OK, this is either very weird or very suspicious.

We're moving along and got an estimate for taking down the rest of the tree. Tonight we decided to go out to dinner. As we drove, the "low tire pressure" light went on.

I went to check it out and discovered a screw in the tire. Had to cancel our plans to get it fixed.

The odd thing is that the same thing happened to me about two weeks ago -- flat tire, caused by a screw.

I can't imagine how a screw could work its way into a tire. I suspect someone is trying some cheap vandalism.

Sounds like someone's trying to screw you.

Unless someone's doing construction near one of the roads you usually drive on and is being sloppy with their supplies.

Latest snag: The insurance company sent checks to cover the house, only they still thought there was a mortgage, so the check was made out to us and the bank, which has been merged out of existence. I paid off the mortgage ten years ago, too, so I couldn't cash the checks due to a nonexistent mortgage from a nonexistent bank.

I was able to send them proof that the mortgage was paid off (though that is a little bit complicated, since I assumed the mortgage, so my name isn't on it) and returned the checks to them. They say they'll reissue them so I can cash them.

They totalled the car -- it was 15 years old and ran fine, but would cost more than its worth to fix.

We used that money to take down the second trunk of the pine tree, which looked awfully rickety. It upset our neighbor, who ended us sending us a letter from their lawyer that made us responsible for damage. It's down now.

The screws in the tires seem to just be a coincidence. I may have picked them both up at the same time, but one got pushed into the tire sooner than the other.

Otherwise, we've gotten contractors to look at things and are getting estimates.
