Nationals, up 6-0 much of the game in Florida, go into the 9th up by 3 still but Raphael Soriano blows the 'cake' save and the Marlins win it walk-off style 7-6

Might be about time to stick a fork in them BoSox.
While both the Rays & Sawx had bad first halves, the Rays have come alive (11 wins in last 12 and just2.5 behind Yanx) and just about killed any thoughts of David Price on the trading block.
But the Sox are going backwards if anything. Romped on 14-1 last night by the Jays, they're 10 games under .500, at a negative 50 in RS/RA, and suddenly it's Jon Lester trade rumors dominating.

Jason Lane pitched for the Padres yesterday afternoon. If that name sounds vaguely familiar it's because he had a somewhat successful career as an OF for the Astros a decade or so back including a 26 HR/54 XBH year when Houston went to the WS in 2005. (I also remember him as an oft-rumored trade target to the Mets in those days). But he just crashed and burned after that '05 season and was gone from the Astros and then from majors by 2007 at age 30.
So that's it, right? No, he's been kicking around the minors since then, for six different organizations at least twice that many locations and with three separate stops in independent leagues. He started appearing occasionally as a pitcher and by 2012 had completely made the transition to the mound.
So yesterday, a full seven years after his last ML game, he got the start against the Braves in Atlanta, taking the loss but only giving up 2 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings while his teammates were, not surprisingly for the Pads, being shut out.
He winds up being the oldest pitcher (37) to make his mound debut and go at least 5 innings since ... Satchel Paige

* Thanks very much for reinventing yourself as a pitcher, fighting your way back to the majors after 7 years, and giving us a halfway decent start in your return Jason Lane (see above) - you've been DFA'd

* God the Rangers suck!

* The Cards & Padres played a 3-1, 8-1/2 inning game last night with only 12 total hits and one in-inning pitching change - and it still managed to take them 3 hours, 20 minutes.
A short time ago I wouldn't have though that was even possible; now it's becoming routine.

For the 2nd time in three games, the Nats went into the 9th inning this afternoon with the seemingly easy to protect three run lead in Miami.
This time they went to Drew Storen rather than Soriano and it worked ... that is if you call giving up two runs and leaving two on to squeak out a skin-of-the-teeth win 'working'.
The pen has been a strength for the Washington's all year but suddenly they're looking awfully shaky.

From the: 'And you think YOUR team is stupid file': the Pirates managed to walk into an inning-ending double play last night in SF.

Pirates leading 5-4, Top 6th, 1-out via a sac bunt which put runners on 2nd (Travis Snider) & 3rd (Gaby Sanchez). Catcher Chris Stewart draws a walk so it's about to be bases-loaded and one out ... EXCEPT THAT:
- Snider on 2nd seems to think the bases already were loaded and starts strolling towards 3rd
- Giants realize this and throw down to 2nd and eventually tag him out in a run-down
- Sanchez sees Snider coming towards him at 3rd and makes a break for home, but doesn't do so early enough and finds himself in a run down and is also tagged out ... Inning Over!

Pirates lost 7-5

We kinda needed that game on the Bucs, too. They've had too much momentum, even if they were on the verge of sweeping the Wild Card leaders. That game --- maybe that play --- cost them the WC lead!

Would be interested to grab Lane out of pure curiosity.
