Showdown at High Noon - IGT, Mets-Phils 7/30/14

Not expecting Gary Cooper to show up even though it's at High Noon.
I mean, you never know, but even back when Ralph used to call Gary Carter 'Gary Cooper' every once in a while I don't think Gary Cooper ever showed up.
Being dead since before the Mets were ever invented might have something to do with that.

Wheeler vs Kendrick

I think we can beat Kendrick up.
He doesn't look like much of a pitcher to me and, besides, is only listed at 5' 2"

Typical Zack, a walk, 4 long AB and no hits or runs.

Re: Showdown at High Noon - IGT, Mets-Phils 7/30/14

True confession time. I realized recently that I've not watched/listened to a Mets game since RA Dickey's 20th win, which was September 27, 2012. I hadn't intended to do this, just found that I have very limited time to follow sports these days and with my son an obsessive Red Sox fan, the little baseball I do follow is Sox-related. Anyhow, I'm listening today's game at work today. Someone want to tell me who all these players are?

Re: Showdown at High Noon - IGT, Mets-Phils 7/30/14

Curtis Granderson - former Detroit Tiger and played for some other team before coming to the Mets. Lefty. Power guy. Started slow but having a good season. Supposedly a really good guy.

Daniel Murphy - This guy's been around a while. you should know him. He's playing second these days.

Captain America (Though he hasn't become black)

Lucas Duda - best hitter on the team this season. One of the best sluggers in the league this year. Little goofy. Plays first base these days.

Travis d'Arnaud - Catching prospect that's been traded for two Cy Young winners. Mets got him for Dickey. Started slow, been good since a brief stint in the minors. Great framer.

Chris Young - "Take a flyer" type guy that can play all three outfield positions. High-K, High-Power guy though lacking a lot of the power this year. He's hit okay recently, but he's on a one year deal and might not make it to September.

Juan Lagares - One of the best defensive CFers in the game. dealt with some nagging injuries and since his last return hasn't been hitting/walking quite enough.

Ruben Tejada - This guy makes out less often than the average major league player, so keeps he line moving. Decent defense at short. Best option there the Mets have, but that's faint praise.

Zack Wheeler - stud SP acquired from the Giants for half a season of Carlos Beltran. Had his ups and downs this year, but plenty of promise and should be an interesting buddy-comedy narrative with Matt Harvey (Another stud young SP getting his Tommy John out of the way this season) going forward.

Re: Showdown at High Noon - IGT, Mets-Phils 7/30/14

Granderson's a former Yank
And a guy that ain't half bad
Murphy is an all-star
As a player and a dad

David Wright's a shining knight
Won that Face-of-Baseball thing
Duda is an introvert
With an extroverted swing

d'Arnaud d'id little d'Amage
'Til a minor league excursion
Chris Young has rarely helped the Mets
Not the shorter blacker version

Juan's defense is cash in hand
But his bat has been loose quarters
Tejada strives and sometimes thrives
But not enough for Met supporters

Wheeler's tall and whips the ball
He's wild but effective
So root, root, root this afternoon
With spirit, and invective

Nice getting the sweet end of a 7th inning debacle for a change.
We spent far too many years being on the wrong side of those exchanges more often than not.

Mets opening up the gates here.

Ruben Tejada is a perfect 3-3 with a walk today and has a little proposed shortstop trade he'd like to tell Mex about.

My fantasy plans for Anna Kendrick have nothing to do with beating her up.
Getting my hands on her maybe, but not hitting her.

Just shy of being on pace for 30 HRs (as today is the 2/3 mark of the season)
And when we figure in the ABs that he missed in April before being awarded the 1B job full time you can project that he IS on pace to reach the 30 mark and maybe crack it.

Can you imagine if the Mets dealt off Duda instead of Davis and their seasons otherwise continued on the track they are on now?

I don't even want to imagine. Every time we hear that the Mets always make the wrong call, let's remember Davis-Duda.

(Now watch as Ike Davis miraculously turns around his career and turns into a Hall of Famer.)

Re: Showdown at High Noon - IGT, Mets-Phils 7/30/14

Everything about today-- from the Shake Shack line, to the YoungerPooper almost decapitating herself by nearly hitting a banister at full clip, right down to the camp kids screaming high-pitched screams when the scoreboard ordered us to MAKE SOME NOISE-- was redeemed by the win, and how it came about, and the smiles on everyone's faces before, during, and after. The weather was fantastic, the moods more so. A viewbook day, as we used to say on particularly sunny, this-campus-NEVER-looks-this-nice days back at the alma mater. Simply... beautiful.

Not bacon-on-a-stick beautiful, but still.
