IGT 08/02 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

d'Kong76
Aug 02 2014 08:22 AM

San Francisco at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Saturday, August 2, 2014
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The San Francisco Giants continue their quest for a division title when they visit the New York Mets for the second contest of their four-game series Saturday. San Francisco kicked off its 10-game road trip in winning fashion as Ryan Vogelsong tossed a two-hitter for his second career complete game. With the triumph, the Giants climbed within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and maintained their slim lead atop the wild-card standings.

New York's offense was non-existent after scoring 18 runs in a three-game series against Philadelphia, save for Lucas Duda's career-best 20th home run of the season and sixth in nine contests. The Mets still are within reach of a postseason berth as they are six games out of a wild-card spot and trail first-place Washington in the NL East by seven. New York is 2-2 on its seven-game homestand and 7-7 since the All-Star break.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Giants RH Jake Peavy (1-10, 4.71 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (5-5, 2.79)

A return to the NL did not help Peavy record his first win in over three months as the veteran lost his debut with San Francisco after allowing four runs - three earned - and six hits over six innings against Los Angeles on Sunday. The 33-year-old has gone an astounding 0-10 since winning at Toronto on April 25. Peavy has fared well against New York over his career, going 6-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts.

DeGrom continued his sensational stretch on Sunday, scattering four hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings at Milwaukee en route to his fourth consecutive victory. It was the fourth scoreless outing of the season for the 26-year-old, who has allowed a total of two runs in 27 1/3 frames during his winning streak. DeGrom, who never has faced the Giants, has yielded seven runs over his last seven starts.

WALK-OFFS:
1. San Francisco SS Brandon Crawford is 8-for-13 against New York this season.
2. New York is 5-0-1 in its last six series at home.
3. The Giants designated 2B Dan Uggla and OF Tyler Colving for assignment and purchased the contracts of OF Jarrett Parker and INF Matt Duffy from Double-A Richmond. Duffy made his major-league debut Friday and recorded an RBI single.

Re: IGT 08/02 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

By my math, the Mets are 4-3 this season when batting the pitcher 8th in 2014.

Eric Young is the only non-pitcher to bat ninth in an intraleague game this season. He has 6 hits in 25 ABs with 2 runs, 3 RBI, 2 walks and 5 Ks so far in the pitchers spot.

deGrom and Niese are the only pitchers to bat eighth. Combined, they are 1 for 15 with a walk and 9 Ks in those situations.

Missed that one.

The Mets lost that game, dropping the record to 4-4. Colon went 0 for 3 with a K and Young went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Re: IGT 08/02 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

Holy crow, what a catch. I didn't think he would reach that for nothing. Especially after cutting towards left a bit before he started straight back.

I saw some extra giddy-up there. I may be over reacting but I think that's one of the best catches he's ever made, and he's made some amazin' ones.

The leap and grab directly over his head. I don't know that a catch gets any more difficult than that. And yea, he did make it look smoooo000OOOoooth.

Lots of fielders can pull em back in, or track one down, but only very few can make that play.

Re: IGT 08/02 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

EYoung robs another possibility. Nice catch there. I wasn't so sure E was going to catch up to that one either. Very nice.

Looking at Lags catch again. He wasn't even looking the ball into his glove. He stuck it up there above his head and was already preparing to run into the wall.

If Pablo scored I would have been VERY upset with Lags. Like I was up there^. I'm okay now.

Now I'm not.
That's a form of showboating that I don't want to see from him. He knew there was no way he could catch it. He could have kept it to a single and he should have. Done.

I'm okay again.

Re: IGT 08/02 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

i was at this one with my family. I feared it'd be rained out, but the weather was perfect. We sat behind 1st base, up in the Mezz (sorry, the Caesar section, whateverthefuck that is), which are fine seats, and more reasonably priced than the Field/Loge areas.

The dueling no-hitters got us to to the 7th Inning Stretch in 1.5 hours; i thought the game would get completed in under 2hrs, which would've made us, and Frayed Knot, very happy. But the bats finally came alive, and both teams scored a bit, but the bullpens held up and we got the W in about 2.5 hours. The game was followed by some nice fireworks, an easy exit of the lot and onto the highway, with no traffic home. A lovely evening.

and, by the way, deGrom is a beast.
