San Francisco at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, August 3, 2014
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets hope to receive another stellar pitching performance when they host the San Francisco Giants in the third contest of their four-game series Sunday. New York evened the set at one win apiece behind a tremendous effort from rookie Jacob deGrom, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh and finished having allowed two runs and four hits in 7 1/3 innings as he won his fifth straight start. Wilmer Flores highlighted a four-run seventh with a two-run double as the Mets remained within six games of a wild-card spot in the National League.

Bartolo Colon has the dubious task of following deGrom as he squares off against Madison Bumgarner, who looks to become the sixth 13-game winner in the major leagues. San Francisco's Jake Peavy was perfect through 6 1/3 innings before imploding in the seventh en route to his 11th consecutive loss. Pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa delivered a two-run single as the Giants kept hold of a wild-card berth but fell 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

TV:
1:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (12-8, 3.41 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (10-8, 3.88)

Bumgarner had his three-start winning streak snapped Monday, when he was reached by Pittsburgh for five runs and six hits in four innings. The North Carolina native, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Friday, allowed only one run and nine hits while striking out 13 over 14 frames in his previous two outings. Bumgarner has been superb in three career turns against New York, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Colon, who survived Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, has posted back-to-back victories after a four-start stretch during which he went 0-3 and surrendered at least four runs three times. The 41-year-old Dominican yielded 10 hits but held Philadelphia to one run over 7 2/3 innings to halt his two-game skid at home. Colon is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA in four career outings against the Giants, including a no-decision at San Francisco on June 7 in which he gave up three runs - one earned - over 5 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS:
1. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Saturday in his return from a 12-game absence due to a concussion.
2. New York 1B Lucas Duda failed to drive in a run Saturday, ending his seven-game RBI streak.
3. The Giants' relievers have worked 18 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Once again, Obi Juan Lagares makes a great catch seem routine.

Why? He's batting .167/.254/.233 against lefties, with just one of his 20 HR's coming against a southpaw. Against lefties this season, his slugging percentage is lower than his on-base percentage!

Career against lefties - .215/.294/.323, with eight of his 56 lifetime HR's against southpaws.

Duda can't hit lefties.

What would Earl Weaver do?

Re: IGT 08/03 -- SF Giants at NY Mets

I'd let Duda play against the occasional lefty, just to at least give him a chance to maybe show he can play every day.

Meanwhile, I got home from the movies and turned on the TV just in time to see Brandon Belt finish his home run trot. And then I turned off the TV. Maybe I'll check in again a little later.

I agree in that if Duda's ever gonna figure out how to hit lefties, he's gotta see some lefties to have a chance.

Damn. I hat Hunter Pence. WannaBe nemesis.

That's the Catch-22, ain't it?

Lucas Duda sits against a lefty, again

NEW YORK -- It's no longer automatic that Lucas Duda gets left out of the Mets lineup when the opposing starter is left-handed. But Duda didn't play last Tuesday against Cole Hamels, and he isn't starting Sunday against Madison Bumgarner.

Two different circumstances, Mets manager Terry Collins explained Sunday morning.

With Hamels, it was simply the matchup. Duda is 1 for 13 in his career against the Phillies lefty, with seven strikeouts.

And with Bumgarner?

"Some of these guys are just different," Collins said. "This guy throws across his body, and he's hard to pick up. If you're going to give a left-hander a day off, this is going to be the guy."

So, in addition to sitting Duda, Collins gave Daniel Murphy his first day off since the All-Star break. Curtis Granderson is the only left-handed hitter in the Mets lineup against Bumgarner.

Collins said he considered playing Duda instead of Granderson, but that would have required Eric Campbell to play right field, where Campbell is less comfortable than at first base.

Duda had started four of the past six games against lefties before Sunday. He started only two of the first 16 games in which the Mets faced a left-hander this season.

Yea it is.

No win 200 for Bart today.

My BoFat nickname never stuck. Wassup with that? I would think the reference too old but Hawaii 5-0 is back on again ( I don't watch it- I assume he deals with the classic character Wofat). Someone twitter the nick BoFat and see if it trends.

I haven't been at the screen for 6 of the 8 runs, so it doesn't feel as bad as it is to me.

Since they're not worried about deGrom's innings any more, maybe he can pitch back-to-back days....
