IGT 8/8/14 NYM @ PHI: Our Long Nationals Nightmare Is Over

Forty years after Richard Nixon vamoosed out of Washington, the Mets head up from the nation's current capital to the nation's previous capital (representing, come to think of it, the nation's previous previous capital).

Colon, a bouncing baby righty when RMN was still clinging to office, versus A.J. Burnett, whom the Mets will hopefully impeach and remove from the mound midway through his term.

He ain't heavy, he's Bartolo...

NY Mets at Philadelphia
When: 7:05 PM ET, Friday, August 8, 2014
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
SportsDirect Inc.

Fresh off a dramatic three-game sweep, the Philadelphia Phillies look to ride their new-found momentum into the series opener with the visiting New York Mets on Friday. Ryan Howard's eighth-inning grand slam lifted Philadelphia to a 6-5 victory over Houston on Thursday. New York has lost four of its last five games, including a 5-3 defeat in 13 innings against Washington on Thursday despite three hits from All-Star Daniel Murphy.

Friday's pitching matchup features a pair of veteran right-handers with 33 combined seasons of major league experience. A.J. Burnett takes the ball for the Phillies, still in search of his first win since the All-Star break. Mets starter Bartolo Colon, who defeated Burnett at Citi Field on July 28, is looking to bounce back from one of his worst performances of the season.

TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets RH Bartolo Colon (10-9, 4.12 ERA) vs. Phillies RH A.J. Burnett (6-11, 4.16)

Colon had not allowed a home run in four straight starts before giving up a pair in Sunday's 9-0 loss to San Francisco. The 41-year-old was charged with six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in that contest - the most runs he has given up since mid-May. In two starts against the Phillies this season, Colon is 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA, including a strong performance in that 7-1 triumph on July 28.

Burnett has endured an up-and-down season and has a chance to break his career high for losses, set when he went 10-15 for the 2011 Yankees. His last four starts have featured two dreadful outings and an abbreviated performance his last time out, when he gave up five runs - one earned - in 1 2/3 innings before getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The 37-year-old has faced David Wright and Curtis Granderson a combined 45 times, holding them to six hits (one home run).

WALK-OFFS:
1. Murphy has four straight multi-hit games and enters this matchup riding a 10-for-19 hot streak.
2. Howard had eight RBIs in the Astros series, while CF Ben Revere was 8-for-15 against Houston.
3. The Mets have taken eight of 12 meetings between the teams in 2014.

Not that I want to seem greedy or anything (after all, who am I to turn down 7 hits plus a walk in a 10 batter span?) but mixing in an XBH every once in a while would be a nice surprise.

A quiet fifth, and Colon is in line for the winnebago.

"Bartolo Bastardo," that's what.

I think a Winnebago is also Bartolo's personal car.
The others were all too small.

OK, Flores isn't fast. But he's also not nearly as slow as some claimed and the rest of us were led to believe.
Some of the scouting reports I'd read on the prospect sites talked about him as having '25' speed (on the 20-80 scale) which is basically Mo Vaughn/Molina brother territory.

Nothing against Eveland, but if I was Bart, and they pulled me, I'd kinda be pissed if they didn't turn the game over to the best available pitcher.

Pretty quick inning considering all that happened.
Most of the hits were first-pitches, the walk was four pitches, and the K only 4.

It tastes like briney cognac, I believe.

Go, go, CoCo.

Goes in the Hall of Mets Milestones Achieved by 21st Century Mets Who Were Kinda Passing Through at the Right Time: Sheffield's 400th homer, Glavine's 300th win, Robby Alomar's 2500th hit...

why do i keep having to say this? If you're celebrating and laughing at how little Bartolo Colon cares about batting and how funny he looks doing it, you're basically saying "All-DH'

That makes no sense at all. If you admit that one pitcher is pathetic at the plate, that means that no pitchers should bat, ever?

Re: IGT 8/8/14 NYM @ PHI: Our Long Nationals Nightmare Is O

Agreed.

I'm not celebrating and laughing at how little he cares. I don't believe he cares little at all. I think he cares, but he's not going to let his failure detract from what he does well.

I delight in the joy a guy takes in playing baseball, even being put in a position in which he is out of his depth. It humanizes the game. Specialization dehumanizes the game.

Re: IGT 8/8/14 NYM @ PHI: Our Long Nationals Nightmare Is O

Exactly. Bartolo's funny-looking, yes. But he's not fun because he looks stupid-- he's fun because he seems to have a sense of humor and "ah, well" perspective about the whole, stupid-looking business.
