Well, it's not as if they've been lacking for good young talent. It's just that the breakout seasons for those guys have been in Year 2 or 3 of late (or run concurrent with an even bigger rookie year, as with Puig/Jose Fernandez).

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

Are there any strong rookies in the NL this year? Or do deGrom and perhaps, d'Arnaud, have a legitimate shot? I think d'Arnaud needs to get his batting average up above .250, which won't be easy at this point, to really get into the conversation. DeGrom's handicap is that the innings limit will likely prevent him from finishing the season.

we had this going in another thread.

Not that voters use fWAR mostly, but Billy Hamilton had built quite a lead.

Billy Hamilton 3.2
Chris Owings 1.9
Jacob deGrom 1.7
..
Travis d'Arnaud 0.6
Eric Campbell 0.5
Jeurys Familia 0.5

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

It's been a while for the Dodgers, hasn't it? With no more Tommy LaSorda.

Though the Dodgers haven't produced a ROY since 1996, Hollandsworth, their last winner, was the fifth of five straight Dodger ROY's, a major league record:

1996 Todd Hollandsworth
1995 Hideo Nomo
1994 Raul Mondesi
1993 Mike Piazza
1992 Eric Karros

During Lasorda's managerial stint, the Dodgers also ran off a four straight ROY streak from 1979-1982:

1982 Steve Sax
1981 Fernando Valenzuela
1980 Steve Howe
1979 Rick Sutcliffe

Dodgers also won the ROY in four of the award's first seven seasons:

1953 Jim Gilliam
1952 Joe Black

1951
1950
1949 Don Newcombe
1948
1947 Jackie Robinson

Here's a list of each team's next to last ROY winner:

2011 Rays Jeremy Hellickson
2009 Marlins Chris Coghlan
2005 A's Huston Street
2000 Mariners Kazuhiro Sasaki
2000 Braves Rafael Furcal
1999 Royals Carlos Beltran
1998 Cubs Kerry Wood
1998 Dbacks -No D'back ever won the ROY
1997 Phillies Scott Rolen
1997 Red Sox Nomar Garciaparra
1995 Dodgers Hideo Nomo
1993 Angels Tim Salmon
1993 Rockies -franchise has just one ROY winner
1992 Brewers Pat Listach
1991 Twins Chuck Knoblauch
1988 Reds Chris Sabo
1986 Cardinals Todd Worrell
1983 White Sox Ron Kittle
1983 Mets Darryl Strawberry
1982 Orioles Cal Ripken, Jr.
1981 Yankees Dave Righetti
1980 Indians Joe Charboneau
1979 Blue Jays Alfredo Griffin
1978 Tigers Lou Whitaker
1977 (Nationals)/Expos Andre Dawson
1976 Padres Butch Metzger
1975 Giants John Montefusco
1974 Rangers Mike Hargrove

Quiz

Rules: One guess per post, and NO CONSECUTIVE POSTS. If you guess, you wait until somebubby else posts, then you come in. One point per correct guess. Minus one point per incorrect guess. Three incorrect guesses and you're done.

Oh, and no peeking. Honor system.

Question: Since Dwight Gooden was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1984, the Mets have had 13 players garner ROY votes for them. Name those 13.

Dave Magadan had a heckuva half season in 1987, punchless as it was, but came up empty. Jeff Kent split his rookie season between the AL and the NL... and got no RoY votes in either.

My scoring system has turned this into a war of attrition.

While the judges in New York state that "Since Dwight Gooden was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1984," should be clearly understood to mean post-1984, they've graciously sympathasized with the notion that you saw ambiguity there, and will not dock you a point. The world is imperfect; we can't ask language to be perfect.

Point for McDowell. Two rookie Mets remain. One was almost gotten.

Congratulations to co-leaders BML and MGiM. Here's a tiebreaker just for those two --- name the former Met who managed to finish second in RotY voting one season during this period.

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

I just finished looking up Moises' Mets stats. I knew he was good, but I had to re-remember just how damn good he was.Did the Mets ever have any 40 year olds better than Moises and Rickey? They were better than most 25 year old Mets.

Premature fireworks. Moises Alou is incorrect (1 X!). I'm looking for a guy who finished second in RoY voting AS A FORMER MET.

Thank you for participating, but the question was to be tiebreaker for our two finalists.

Did this person actually play for the Mets before heading to the other team, or are we talking guys who were traded out of the Mets system?

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

That rules out Kazmir.

I have two guesses, which breaks the rules. I know Kevin Tapani had a cup of coffee then got decent with the Twins, and Terrance Long had a Starbucks stop and went to Oakland. (Was that part of the disastrous Izzy/Billy Taylor deal?

Picking one, I'm going to guess Long.

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

Terrence Long is not the answer I was looking for, but it IS CORRECT!

I declare you Mets RotY Voting Support Champion. Congratulations.

The guy I was looking for was indeed 1999 RotY runner-up Preston Wilson (Marlins). But Terrence Long pulled it off again the very next year in the AL with the Athletics. Ex-Mets at the time were both.

Re: Rookie of the Year Talk

This was fun!

Baseball card collecting and its rookie emphasis pays off once in a while.

I thought about Preston, but I thought he spent more time with the Mets and wouldn't qualify.

I also was thinking about those Marlins trades -- I seem to remember we made a number of them -- and a bunch of young players went south. I was wondering about some of the pitchers -- Burnett, Yanrall, Peterson.

You know what else would help? This gif of deGrom's slider.

It's not so much that he won't make his final start as he has already made his final start.
