| The Mets agreed to terms with teenage infield prospect Kenny Hernandez for $1 million on Wednesday, according to an industry source. The club has not confirmed the agreement, and Hernandez cannot officially sign until his 16th birthday on Aug. 13. Hernandez, who ranks No. 27 on MLB.com's Top 30 International Prospects list, might have the best all-around swing in the entire class, and he's one of the top shortstops from Venezuela this year. Known for his good hands, strong wrists and quick-twitch action in the batter's box, the 6-foot, 160-pound Hernandez has good bat control, plate discipline and a fluid swing. What's more, Hernandez has shown gap power and the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field. He's athletic and has shown good footwork on defense, but it's unclear if he has the overall skill set to stay at shortstop. Hernandez is from Tumero, Venezuela, and he was trained by former Major League infielder Carlos Guillen at the Carlos Guillen Academy. In accordance to the Basic Agreement, each team is allotted a $700,000 base and a bonus pool based on the team's record in 2013 for the international signing period that started July 2. The Mets' bonus pool total for this year's signing period is $2,697,800. |
