I got a new color TV last month. I'd feel old if I didn't remember that.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

How great did that field of static hovering three inches in front of the screen feel?

You could float your hand on top of it, but if you reached all the way in and touched it, I guess the set would be grounded, so the field would disperse.

If you just bought a new black-and-white set then you'd REALLY remember it.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

Not only do I remember it, my mom and dad had to go to a furniture store 50 miles away to order it and it was delivered a week or so later.

And I remember when we went from one channel (Altoona) to five channels (Altoona (CBS), State College (Public TV), Johnstown (ABC), Scranton (NBC) and WPIX. Dial numbers 2 thru 6.

We hit the big time with Dial numbers 2 thru 13 a few years later (and Dad and I bacame Mets fans with WOR)

We were definitely not early - they had been out for a while before we got our first one. I couldn't wait to finally see my favorite shows in living color.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

We had a color tv as far back as I remember, but also had a B&W tv in the kitchen. Actually we still had that B&W tv well into the late 1980s when our house was burgled and it was one of the most puzzling items lifted.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

I don't remember specific details of the arrival of the first color TV in the house but I certainly recall not having one and having the idea that our house was among the later ones to get one - but it's possible that last one is the electronic equivalent of the walk to school being up-hill in both directions.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

I remember very well when my family got our first color TV. Because I was lobbying for one for what seemed like forever. I had been bugging my folks for years. Imagine being an 8 year old fan of Batman and not be able to see it in color. That was okay though. It made the Batman trading cards all the more special to view.
And Star Trek as well.

But baseball games in B&W? I wish that fate on no one.

I was just out of 8th grade. 15 yrs old. I remember saying to my folks," Hey, for my graduation can we get a color TV?" Me bringing up a color TV was so old by now that they knew I was joking. I had given up on actually getting one. But they did get one soon after and I was thought that was so kool. Of course it was probably just good timing & more for the family but I like to think that last graduation push is what did it.

I think my desire to colorize stuff, like the 70 Topps WS cards, is rooted in the fact that I wanted a color TV for so long, and watched B&W TV for 15 years. I learned to imagine the colors while watching.

Ha, that reminds me of something.

WHen I was really little, maybe even preschool, my Aunt Hazel had a color tv. (She was always innovative). My parents took me down to her house so I could watch Rudolph on it (I swear I am not making this up)

I honestly couldn't figure out what was "color" about this tv. I looked and looked and finally saw the cable clip on the back (remember those little plastic clothespinny looking things?)

I decided that must have been it and was unimpressed.

I must not have watched Rudolph very closely.

Does it make you feel older or younger that I'm 32 and remember this?

Specifically I remember playing Donkey Kong on my uncle's giant black and white monstrosity that he was adamant he wanted to keep until he got a 3D one. (That TV is long gone, though he doesn't own a 3D one)

My love for the Mets was nurtured on Sunday afternoons watching Channel 9 on the little B&W TV in my grandma's kitchen.

I remember when my parents got one of those huge console color TVs, and then we put a rotor on the antenna to get the clearest signals.

Does anyone here remember Wometco Home Theater?

Before cable television came to Long Island my parents subscribed to WHT. It had one (count 'em, one) station and used this huge descrambler box so you could see the signal. Programming would start in the evening, and I think they showed two movies a night.

Once cable and satellite dishes became more readily available, WHT died a quick death.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

Wometco was channel 68. It would occasionally come in all snowy and warped out in Brooklyn, and once in a while, even with sound. Wometco showed porn movies at night. Not that me and my friends ever squinted our way through reception challenged '80's porn.

Yep, and my Stevie Wonder and Tower of Power records always needed the heavier coin, a quarter perhaps.

Could also be because I played the grooves right off the Tower of Power ones

First color TV: Saturday, November 30, 1974. It was that big a deal that the date stays with me.

First Mets game watched at home in color: April 8, 1975, Joe Torre's and Dave Kingman's Met debut. Cut Hebrew school to take in the blue and orange in all their majesty.

Yep. It was near the Whitestone Parkway in Flushing, about one or two exits East of the Van Wyck / Shea split. It was really a Nathan's type food place with a few rides and games for the kids.

If you got off at that exit and went back under the parkway, the street took you to Northern Blvd. near Main St. Flushing

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

There was a 2009 movie ADVENTURELAND (Jesse Eisenberg, Kristin Stewart) about an amusement park but I don't believe a location was ever specified and certainly wasn't about that one in particular.
I thought the Farmingdale one had closed at one point, but it's definitely open now and maybe there was only a brief close/re-open due to management change and/or upgrade.
I suspect the Adventure's Inn vs Adventureland 'controversy' (because I remember it as Adventure's Inn also) could just stem from a generation of Long Island kids hearing their city-raised parents refer to it as Adventures Inn out of habit because of the Queens one that Zvon brought up.

oe: Notes on IMDB refer to the "real" Adventureland as being in Farmingdale, NY and that the movie was originally scheduled to open on the date of the park's "re-opening" - although it goes on to mention that there's another park with the same name in Iowa and that the movie was shot at a differently-named park in Pittsburgh.

Re: Are you old if you remember ...

Kids in my neighborhood called it Adventure's Inn. Maybe they picked that up from their parents, who remembered the name of the park in Queens. Or maybe the one on 110 had changed its name at some point. I'm really not sure.

Oh, and it is still there. I remember driving past it the last time I was in the area, when I visited my grandparents' graves last summer.

Adventureland is Long Island's Amusement Park since 1962 and welcomes you and your family and friends to come enjoy a fun and exciting day on our rides, attractions, games, and more. Adventureland Amusement Park is only located 30 minutes east of New York City, at 2245 Broad Hollow Rd. in Farmingdale, New York and features over 30 fun and exciting rides and attractions.
