Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

FK and JCL, I'm sure you've seen this making its rounds. Do you guys know how this started? Do you support it?

Re: Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

I believe it started as a fundraiser around an athlete from Boston who had ALS. The first guy I saw do it was actually ChipoltleRocket Jack Leathersich.

I got no problem with it inasmuch as rare incurable diseases don't get a lot of private investment or attention cuz there's no $$ in it for Big Pharma. OTOH, there's the risk as with any charitable endeavor of creating the impression that the condition & treatment are easy or fun.

Yeah, sure. Why not.
There is an element to this that's sort of geared towards the famous or semi-famous, many of whom are in a 'Hey look at me' mode almost constantly anyway, and this gives them an opportunity to say 'Hey look at me' once again but in a way where they can't be criticized but they're doing for 'a good cause', and in a way where it gets circulated via social media, and with shout-out/name-checks to their famous friends.

But if it helps, it helps, and there's some indication that it's been at least a short-run boom so I certainly don't want to be too critical. I mean I could dump ice water on my head every day for the rest of the month and it wouldn't do any good because, unlike say Matt Lauer, nobody's going to care or even know about it if I do it. So if Roger Goodell wants to jump aboard (although i didn't see any ice in his) and call out "his good friend" Michael Strahan in the process (whom he just inducted into the pro football HoF and, oh yeah, just happens to have TWO national TV shows) then that's better than them not joining in even if it is partially self-serving or, as JCL points out, has a 'fun factor' to it that's disconnected to the whole topic. Of course it would have been better still had Goodell NOT spent the majority of the last decade sounding like a 1970's era cigarette executive by denying that football had any connection whatsoever to head injuries (which themselves may be a contributing factor to ALS) ... but that's a whole separate issue.

Re: Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

There definitely is a "look at me" aspect of this. But it is hard to criticize someone when it is for a good cause. Especially if it brings more attention and spurs donation.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought given your personal connection here. I suspect it is just a matter of time before someone tags you through social media.

By the way, when I was nominated, I misread it, and took the Pissbucket Challenge. OOPS!

Apparently one of the co-initiators of this thing has died this weekend in a swimming accident. Just fun-lovin' bro whose friend had ALS and his last act was this odd idea that ended up raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Wow. That is tragic.

Seems like Boston has been the center of the universe recently. Everything coming out of there is tragedy and triumph.

Actually, according to the report i heard this morning, so far it's raised over $15 million more than the same period last year, with hundreds of thousands of more donors.

I don't know anyone with this disease personally, or anyone who died of it, but i think its great if our culture's inherent narcissism can be harnessed as a power for good. I don't get what the downside is here. People resent celebrity participation because they feel its insincere or self-serving? So what? They're insincere and self-serving whether they do this or not, so let them do it and draw a big enough crowd to do some good. Do people have the same attitude towards performers at a telethon, or other fundraising events that capitalize on the participation of celebrities, or that have a "fun" or entertaining aspect so people will join in?

Of course people can feel anyway they want about it, but the basis of criticism just eludes me.

And MFairy, good for MK! The Sagette and her friends did it, too. Then they sent checks to the ALS organization, which they never would have done if this phenomenon had not reached them in the digital universe in which they live. So the message of what this activity is actually about seems to have been well disseminated throughout the culture.

You can't put the ice in the container and then have it
dumped on you! Ice has to be in water at least ten minutes.

Re: Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

My youngest and her friends did this last week, and sent in their donations. Like Vic said, they wouldn't have done this otherwise, so this is a very good thing.

The Foo Fighters set the bar pretty high with this:

Re: Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

I've been "tagged" in this challenge. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to donate the hundred bucks. The way I see it, it's win-win. More money to the charity, and I don't get a bucket of ice water poured over my head.

Re: Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS

I did the challenge today, and made a donation to ALS in memory of Lunchbucket and Frayed Knot's sister. My only regret is that I could not locate my Meet the Jens shirt to wear for the video.

Thanks! I got an email alert that a donation was made as well, so this is totally legit (not that I'd doubt ya).
