IGT 9/14/14 WSH @ NYM: It's A Stupid Division Anyway

Lose today and get eliminated from contention for the sixth National League East title in franchise history.

Win today and, uh...hey, we don't need a reason. Just win today.

Niese vs. Zimmerman(n).

Re: IGT 9/14/14 WSH @ NYM: It's A Stupid Division Anyway

In the big picture this game doesn't mean much. But after Saturday's mess--one which is destined to be 'Exhibit A' in the 'Worst Baseball Games Ever' category (15 hits allowed, 4 errors plus about 5 more mistakes/goofs and just plain fuck-ups, walks, HBPs, high pitch-counts, bad weather, slow pace, yadda, yadda]--a win today means a split in this series against what is probably the league's best team.
So at least give it a good try, OK boys?

Washington at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, September 14, 2014
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The Washington Nationals are closing in on the National League East title, and their dominance over the New York Mets has played a big part in it. The Nationals improved to 12-3 against New York this season on Saturday and carry a 9 1/2-game lead and a magic number of six for clinching the division into Sunday's finale of a four-game series with the host Mets. Washington's Anthony Rendon is having a torrid series, going 10-for-15 with two homers and five runs scored.

Saturday's loss dropped New York to 1-13 in its last 14 home games against the Nationals and left it 6 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the second wild card with 13 to play. Juan Lagares is 5-for-7 in the series and has hit safely in 11 of 13 overall for New York, which still faces a six-game road trip against division rivals Atlanta and Washington. Jonathon Niese takes the mound Sunday against Jordan Zimmermann, who is unbeaten since the All-Star break.

TV:
1:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (11-5, 2.93 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jonathon Niese (8-10, 3.59)

Zimmermann beat Atlanta last time out, allowing four runs (two earned) over six innings to improve to 5-0 in his last 10 starts. The 28-year-old faced the Mets in back-to-back outings during his unbeaten run, giving up three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision before winning at New York with an unearned run over 6 1/3 frames on Aug. 18. He has permitted three earned runs or fewer in nine consecutive starts.

Niese did not factor in the decision last time out despite limiting Colorado to one run over 6 2/3 innings. Niese has not fared well in losing both starts against the Nationals this season, permitting a season high-tying six runs in six innings on Aug. 6 and lasting only four frames while giving up five runs (three earned) on May 16. Washington's Jayson Werth is 8-for-25 lifetime against Niese.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Nationals SS Ian Desmond became the fourth shortstop in league history with three straight seasons of 20 homers and 20 stolen bases.
2. Mets RHP Vic Black has allowed a run in each of his last four relief appearances.
3. Nationals CF Denard Span has hit safely in six straight and 11 of 12 games.

Re: IGT 9/14/14 WSH @ NYM: It's A Stupid Division Anyway

In the post game interview last night, TC said that Black is going to be "looked at" today (meaning medically). He thinks the neck problems Vic had earlier in the year still linger, causing him to throw with an inconsistent arm slot.

I'd give the old 'check up from the neck up' to everyone who played in Saturday's game.

I haven't been following the posts here so much since school started so sorry if this has been discussed, but when is Niewenhuis going to get another start? I would have thought that an .859 OPS would get noticed on this team.

you mean the HIGHEST OPS on the team? non-pitcher edition? why bother?

Plus near when/if/maybe we're competitive it'd be nice to shake the "can't beat the Nats at home" narrative a little bit in advance.

It astounds me that TC is still managing here.

My guess is that Nieuwenhuis gets the start today.
I don't think it's any more complicated than, with den Dekker banged up a bit, Young was given a rare start (he had had five since the end of July). He responded with a 3 hit night and so was given another; he then got 2 more and with an LHP going was given another; got 2 more and was given a 4th.

Matt Williams not taking foot off pedal today. Maybe it's a footnote in their world or maybe they'd enjoy eliminating the Me(j)ts personally today.

Or maybe they assume the Mets were eliminated in August.

I thought September was about seeing what Niewy and den Dekker could do. Apparently that's by the boards.

well he was playing den Dekker everyday before he hurt his hand.

but Nieuwenhuis has been better and deserves a shot. It's almost like because he had a modicum of success, they've determined he can be a bench player and therefore he will be a bench player while they let den Dekker mostly suck every day to see if he can play.

Whoever had Wilmer Flores in the first to hit a triple pool please come up to collect your winnings.
Oh wait, that was none of you.

WF has also has another hit, a diving catch, and went 1st to 3rd on a single.

And it all still adds up to zero runzels. Come on, support your local good pitching performance.

Re: IGT 9/14/14 WSH @ NYM: It's A Stupid Division Anyway

Niese being late in covering 1st and later Wilmer not holding onto the ball in the rundown (at least that was a physical mistake and not a mental one) cost two runs.
The infield actually executed two run-down plays quite nicely today and we even got an out via a come-backer (for like the 2nd or 3rd time this season).

Other than that, that they hit HRs and we don't 'bout sums things up.

Re: IGT 9/14/14 WSH @ NYM: It's A Stupid Division Anyway

Yeah, the sloppy play (characteristic of both September and rookie-laden teams, but still) doesn't really work with an offense starved for extra-base hits.

On a glide path now to a typical 6-8 games under .500 record.
