Rumored Management Shuffling

Adam Rubin reporting that (1) Terry Collins is likely to stick around; (2) Wally Backman will return the big league staff as the new third-base coach; and (3) Tim Teufel will transfer off the base lines and become the batting instructor.

Ken Rosenthal reporting that (4) the Mets are working on an extension with Sandy Alderson.

Edgy MD reporting that (5) this all sucks if your name is Lamar Johnson.

I think Wally should be the third-base coach when the Mets face a left-handed starting pitcher and Teufel when it's a righty.

Re: Rumored Management Shuffling

If nothing else, it would mean a more skilled infielder to coach the infielders than Teuf or (probably Terry) ever was.

Not that having skills means you can teach skills.

Re: Rumored Management Shuffling

I think having Wally coach for a season is a good idea. TC can go out a winner (Mets make the post in '15) and the transition to Wally can end up feeling like a more natural thing. TC retires from field work, Backman steps right on up.

If this ends up being true I imagine it'll be because something like "A couple of the players were talking to Teufel about some things and what he had to say really helped them."

I mean, he IS right there after all.

I am taking it as a demotion for Teufel. I don't know that he has any ability in this new role. The possibility that he is a "nice guy" may have been enough.

The guy has been in the system for eight years, with Collins for five. Presumably he's instructed a batter or two in that time.

Re: Rumored Management Shuffling

Nothing yet. It's unofficial at this point. Presumably, it'll come out in a post-season press conference.

It's technically not so much a three-year extension, so much as picking up a pre-existing option and then adding an extra deuce.

I had thought I recalled Alderson said earlier in the season that he was interested in GM-ing the Mets for two more years. Maybe he meant two more years beyond his current contract, which in his mind included the option. Or maybe he wants a little more security now that he's not going to get the commissioner job.

Right. Of course, Backman being on the major league staff for a season or two (after having success at AAA) sets him up well to interview for managerial openings, whether they happen in New York or elsewhere.

Mets planning to address the media this afternoon to announce the Alderstension. Notable in that (1) it seems Sandy usually prefers to face the media in less formal settings than a podium at a press conference, and (2) unless somebody else represents ownership (Bill Maher?), it'll be Jeff's first face time since the harassment/wrongful termination lawsuit broke.

Ken Rosenthal smells like a rose this afternoon. Adam Rubin, not so much.

On the coaching staff's status:

"We'll make a decision and have an announcement on the coaching staff very shortly after the end of the season. One rumor I would like to debunk is the possibility of Tim Teufel becoming the hitting coach. That's not something that we're contemplating. Tim does a very nice job for us at third base and with the infielders. I wouldn't anticipate a change in responsibility."

On whether Wally Backman is a candidate to join the major league staff:

"I'd rather not comment on any specific individuals. We'll make a statement at the end of the season if we have openings, and whether we've immediately filled those or not."

The Puma Sez - Mets are pursuing recently fired NYY hitting coach Kevin Long, although several other teams are as well including Arizona where Long is apparently tight with the just-hired Chip Hale

Also mentioned:
- Abreu probably not a HC candidate for this year
- Teufel has indicated he's not interested and will remain as 3B coach
- no indication that the club has reached out to Edgardo Alfonzo
- AAA hitter coach George Greer remains a possibility
- Rico Brogna has an interest but it's unclear whether that interest goes both ways

And on a semi-related note: the shortening of fences looks like it will proceed--as per Sandy's directive--although no specifics at of yet.

Re: Rumored Management Shuffling

MFYs may hire Omar Minaya.

Sources: Yankees considering Omar Minaya for high-ranking position in front office
October 13, 2014 by ERIK BOLAND / erik.boland@newsday.com

As the Yankees reorganize their baseball operations staff this offseason, a familiar name in New York is getting strong consideration for a high-ranking position with the team.

Several club sources said there has been serious dialogue about hiring former Mets general manager Omar Minaya, now a senior vice president of baseball operations with the Padres.

Minaya, who served as Mets GM from 2005-10, is close with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. It was not immediately clear in what capacity he would serve.

One position could be the one previously held by Mark Newman, who oversaw the Yankees' farm system the past 15 seasons as the senior vice president of baseball operations before recently announcing his retirement. Gordon Blakeley, who served in a variety of pro scouting roles the last 21 years, most recently as an international cross-checker, left for a special adviser role with the Braves.

Minaya has been a senior VP for the Padres since December 2011. After general manager Josh Byrnes was fired on June 23, Minaya shared those duties with assistant GMs A.J. Hinch and Fred Uhlman until A.J. Preller was named GM on Aug. 7.

Minaya's Mets tenure prompts strong opinions both ways, but he played a significant role in the drafting and signing of some of the young talent now maturing with the team.

It would not be unusual for Cashman, who recently signed a three-year extension to continue as Yankees senior vice president and general manager, to bring in a former GM. After Kevin Towers was fired as Padres GM in 2009, he became a special assignment scout for Cashman for the 2010 season. Towers was the Diamondbacks' GM from 2011-14. More recently, Cashman brought aboard former Cubs GM Jim Hendry, who has been a special assignment scout for the Yankees since 2012 and has become a trusted adviser.

Former Royals manager Trey Hillman, whom Cashman brought back to the organization before last season as a special assistant in the Yankees' minor and major-league operations, originally was thought to be the odds-on favorite to replace Newman. However, in the days after Newman announced his retirement, Hillman told confidants of his desire to return to the field in uniform. According to one report, he already has spoken to new Astros manager Hinch about being his bench coach. Joining Joe Girardi's staff in some capacity also cannot be ruled out.

Omar drafted TWO Seawolves for San Diego, so he clearly still has a strong scouting eye. It'd be a solid move for the Yankees.

BOOM! Post reporting that the Mets (and unfortunately, the Yankees) have had preliminary discussions with Dave Magadan about the batting coach position (and presumably about batting leadoff).

batmagadanleadoff

coachmagadanleadoff

http://nypost.com/2014/10/14/the-hittin ... -pursuing/

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dave Magadan has had preliminary discussions with the Yankees and Mets about their hitting coach vacancies.

“I have been called about that, it’s in the preliminary stages and that’s all I can say about it,’’ Magadan told The Post when asked about talking to the Yankees.

Asked about the Mets, Magadan said, “Same thing, preliminary phone calls to see if I had interest.’’

Magadan, a former Mets first baseman, is currently the Rangers’ hitting coach, signed through the 2015 season. However, with the manager’s job open in the wake of manager Ron Washington resigning, the Rangers have granted their coaches permission to talk to other clubs.

“They are letting all their coaches, under contract or not, talk to other teams because of the manager situation,’’ Magadan said.

The Yankees’ job opened last Friday when Kevin Long was axed with a year left on his contract. The Mets fired Dave Hudgens in May, and his replacement Lamar Johnson isn’t coming back.

Magadan has been a hitting coach with the Padres and Red Sox and Rangers. It is believed the Braves also have interest in Magadan.

Should Magadan leave the Rangers, it would create a possible landing spot for Long, who has received several inquiries since his eight-year gig with the Yankees ended.

I'm still trying to figure out what the problem was with Lamar Johnson. Duda was already good, and was good last year too. Nieuwenhuis as well. He'd been 'good' all year, and since his call-up last year. just hasn't gotten much time.

I mean, most of the ineptitude was more that the Abreu/Young Jr/Flores/den Dekker guys suck and can't/couldn't hit. Flores and den Dekker picked it up in late September, but, grain of salt there. They're probably looking at something deeper than strict 2014 performance.

Re: Rumored Management Shuffling

I think it was clear that Hudgen's whacking and Lamar Johnson's appointment was a means of punishing Sandy and not intended to help anything beyond acknowledging organizational dissatisfaction in the offense. That it only lasted through year-end was becasue it was akin to a grounding -- "no new-age hitting gurus for you until next year." That's the Wilpon Way.

Now, that Sandy's free again to go hire a new guy, he's not going to limit himself to some deeply buried organizational instructor.
