I was in the room for his announcement. His largely unchoreographed goodbye "and adios" was very moving. The passing out of quotes later in the evening from former teammates and such later in the evening in the press box -- prepared by an outside PR firm -- detracted from the emotion only a little.

I swear I always miss the good stuff. His numbers are certainly nice, era not withstanding. He's probably one of those small hall/big hall argument guys. Everyone's talking about loving to keep him around as a coach. Is that something he's talked about previously? I always wonder where this stuff comes from, and why he'd have any particular loyalty to the Mets of all the teams he's played for just because it's the last.

I don't know who everybody is. Everybody is talking in this regard?

Y'know, those people. Stoppin'. Starin'. You can't see their faces... only the shadows of their eyes. If there's a chance he could convey a sliver of that hitting knowledge, I'd float the guy an offer. If it doesn't work out, you cut him loose during the first losing streak, send him off where the sun is shining through the pouring rain.

Bully to you, Bubby.

I'm not exactly tabulating it, but I've easily heard half a dozen people float the idea. Certainly, if he can impart his wisdom, I'm all for it. Doesn't always translate to teaching though. I'm just curious if anyone's heard him actively voice this idea.

Well, if his teaching is as clear as his post-game interview this afternoon, whoever hires him is screwed. But you know how this coaching game goes. You start out grinding your shit out in the minors. And very few guys who made the big falafel want to spend their next life back on the bus circuit.

They mentioned yesterday on the broadcast that Abreu was a rookie under Terry Collins too in Houston. He might have some loyalty there.

yeah, Terry was his first and last manager. cool circle there.
Like Robin Ventura for instance. or Mattingly. Times are changing.

Sure. Of course, it helps to get your first job at the top of the field. But I imagine such opportunities are still quite rare.

On the hitting coach front, Mets Blog (citing various sources) lists candidates under consideration to include Abreu, Edgardo Alfonzo, Savannah hitting coach Val Pascucci, LV hitting coach George Greer, and roving instructor Jack Voigt.
|
Edgy MD Sep 30 2014 07:28 AM Re: Abreu |
How about that? Does Terry have enough juice to get an inexperienced guy appointed as his hitting coach?
|
Zvon Sep 30 2014 08:53 AM Re: Abreu |
If Abreu gets the gig over Alfonzo I'm gonna start throwing stuff.
|
Benjamin Grimm Sep 30 2014 09:27 AM Re: Abreu |
Do you have inside information about which of the two would be a better hitting coach?
|
Edgy MD Sep 30 2014 09:40 AM Re: Abreu |
Would be an interesting turn of events if the guy Dave Hudgens brought into the organization turns out to be his eventual replacement.
