SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, AUGUST 2014 The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for August 2014 is first-time winner JUAN LAGARES, squeeking past Lucas Duda on the last day of the month to claim the title by a mere 0.07 points. Juan hit .268/.318/.392 in August with 2 home runs and a team-leading 4 doubles. His 14 RBI were second on the team to Duda. The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month is also a first-time winner, ZACK WHEELER. Zack was 3-1 in August, leading the team with a 2.81 ERA and 30 strikeouts. The Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is JEURYS FAMILIA, for the third time this season. Jeurys pitched in 13 games in August, and had a 2.70 ERA over 13.1 innings. The Schaefer Mets Bench Player of the Month for August is ERIC CAMPBELL. Eric earned only 1.44 points this month in games that he didn't start, but that was enough to put him ahead of runner-up Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who had 1.29 such points. That's kingly stuff, right there. I crown you for that. Did the Topps 1976 cartoon icons not have an Infield/Outfield designation?

If Familia gets a fourth PiotM award and then suffers a catastrophic elbow injury (a la Parnell and Wagner), we will know the curse of Brian Stokes is real.

Although he's played more games in the infield than in the outfield, he's (to date, anyway) played more games in the outfield than any one specific infield position. And anyway, quirks like that are part of the charm of old Topps cards.

Multiposition players have long been the scourge of baseball card accuracy. Although some years I can recall C-1B, INF-OF, and 2B-SS designees.

Yes, but that's tougher in years like 1973 and 1976, where each position has its own icon. It's easiest in 1972, when the position wasn't indicated on the front of the card at all.

Just wondering out loud if Topps dodged the "INF-OF" designation outright in those two years or what. I know they usually had a half dozen or so guys who were neither flesh nor fowl and so got the hybrid label.

Incredibly exciting (within context...and even without) to welcome Juan and Zack to not just the Schaefer Circle of Sports, but champions. Zack looks particularly at home in 1970.

Every time there is a new one of these threads -- right after I admire the cards (love the Familia one) I am left bewildered -- there's NO WAY Brian Stokes was that good.

It's not that Brian Stokes was that good. It's that everyone else on the pitching staff was that bad.
