Re: IGT 09/28 -- 'stros at Metsies -- The Final Cut

Houston at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, September 28, 2014
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

Jose Altuve wasn't interested in resting on his laurels and admitted as much, saying that he was intent on winning the American League batting title on the field. The diminutive star didn't help his cause following an 0-for-4 performance heading into Sunday's regular-season finale against the host New York Mets. Altuve saw his majors-best average dip to .340 as he attempts to hold off Detroit's Victor Martinez (.337).

While Altuve has made contact through the season, Lucas Duda provided the big hit on Saturday as his two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning gave New York a 2-1 victory. The regular-season finale will also mark the end of the career for Bobby Abreu, who announced his retirement just prior to the series. The 40-year-old is expected to receive the start on Sunday.

TV:
1:10 p.m. ET, CSN Houston, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Astros RH Nick Tropeano (1-2, 3.78 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (14-13, 4.08)

Tropeano suffered his second straight loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings versus Texas on Monday. The 24-year-old Long Island native has yet to allow a home run in three starts and will face his hometown team for the first time in his career. Tropeano has walked two batters in each of his outings this season.

Colon has alternated wins and losses in his last 10 outings, and was on the wrong end of the slate on Tuesday. The 41-year-old Dominican permitted four runs on five hits in six innings versus Washington in his last turn. Colon owns a 7-3 mark with a 3.36 ERA in his career against Houston.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Houston CF Dexter Fowler is 13-for-31 during his eight-game hitting streak.
2. New York CF Matt den Dekker is riding a seven-game hitting streak and is 11-for-33 (.333) in his last 12 contests.
3. Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez has collected one double among his two hits over the last two contests. He is 0-for-4 versus Colon.

Re: IGT 09/28 -- 'stros at Metsies -- The Final Cut

Hey why not?

In fact, if you take the four long-time players who pre-announced their retirements effective at the end of the season--Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, Paul Konerko, Adam Dunn--and place each in order of career OPS and then in order of hoopla surrounding his last game, you might find yourself getting a little something that mathematicians like to call: Inverse Correlation

So, yes, I think that uniform patches, commemorative bases, military fly-overs, and the like should be the order of the day in several stadiums this afternoon.

The manager starts Abreu and plans on taking him out mid-game to get an ovation. He's had a wonderful career but I don't give a flying frig about him. The Mets reluctantly made a team museum, won't make a Seaver statue, and refused to have a ceremony honoring the 40th anniversary of the NL Champs but for Abreu they have a sense of history.

Because it don't cost the Mets as much money to take out Abreu mid-game as it would to honor the '73 Mets or to commission a statue.

It was 45 seconds of applause for the end of a great career plus a handshake from countryman Altuve. No pre-arranged dog and pony show, no dugouts emptying him, nothing over the top.
Nice moment and well deserved.

Mets have gone over the top with other stuff in the past (Lenny Harris's PH record, Franco's _00 save (I forget exactly which round number it was) ... but this wasn't one of them.

Re: IGT 09/28 -- 'stros at Metsies -- The Final Cut

The Mets didn't do anything. Didn't do anything but allow him to use their press room to announce his retirement, I guess.

Terry, who loves the guy and was his first manager, did something. He threw him a start --- over Eric Young, big whoop --- and pinch-ran for him after a single.

Perfectly fine with me. Briefly pausing to salute a long and productive career ending on the last day, even --- Bobby Abreu, Todd Zeile, or Willie Randolph --- is everything they incorrectly say about Jeter. It's classy.

I still could have done w/o it. Too many years seeing Abreu the Phil, I guess. Cause he has had a fine career.

I don't believe that Terry moves his bowels without Sandy's permission but you can think what you want to think. Again, this isn't a big deal except when you consider that they didn't find the time to honor the '73 NL Champs and can't be bothered to build a Seaver statue.

Yeah, I think I can.

It seems obvious that a 40-second pause during a ballgame has nothing to do with a statue.

I don't know what to do with that bowels crack. I disagree certainly.

Sheesh, Alderson is both too aloof and a control freak?

It's a 40-second pause. It's simply being decent. It's also the sot of thing that's done all over baseball, by all sorts of managers with all sorts of control over their own bowels.

They hid in the tunnel. Only ones I saw in the dugout were Lamar Johnson and Wally Backman, though Gary said Murphy was there to greet him. He ran past murphy to an empty dugout, so Lamar and Wally halfhearted waved towels and he ran the full length anyhow.

Re: IGT 09/28 -- 'stros at Metsies -- The Final Cut

I was there with the Sage clan; a nice day was had by all. We were in section 327 (3b side, mezz) in the "Caesar" section. I like those Caesar seats. close enough to watch, far enough to be affordable. But a side note: the last row of the mezz is still a limited view, with the overhang blocking the scoreboard. But it doesn't limit view of the game, which is much better than Shea, where the Rear Loge view was like watching the game through a mail slot and every flyball was a mystery. Foodwise, i tried a veggie burger so as not to provoke my acid reflux, but there must've been plenty of processed crap in there because it still burned like i'd eaten a hot dog. So i might as well have.

The game offered a nice goodbye for Abreu; and the 30hr/90rbi season for Duda ends up the only positive offensive accomplishment this year. Colon's 200ip/15w season for a sub .500 team should make his value high enough to get something for him this off-season. Unfortunately, Murphy's return to Earth down the stretch probably lessens his value.
