Assuming everyone's healthy on Opening Day, I'd bet that Harvey won't get the start. I'd bet on either Niese (seniority) or deGrom (best Mets pitcher, 2014 and possibly, reigning ROY).

Nats suck. Getting that in early. With our luck, it'll rain. And that lineup tells me that Sandy did nothing over the winter which would be, um, less than optimal.

I could see a 'hey, let's give the RoY the start!" argument, but it'll be Harvey. hmm, Harvey-deGrom-Wheeler-Colon-Gee (Niese is traded) with deGrom lined up for the Home Opener.

I guess I had either overlooked or not taken seriously Asdrubal Cabrera's free agency. For now, the Nats' stuck-ness with Danny Esipnosa is somewhat analogous to the Mets and Ruben Tejada. So, for giggles and shingles, how do you imagine the lineup changes with Tulowitzki? Tulo to third, Wright to fifth, Cuddyer to seventh and d'Arnaud eighth? Or do you think Wright instead gets bumped up to second, and Granderson back down? Grandy leadoff?

I don't think Wright gets bumped, though I've been suggesting Wright as leadoff or second for a while. How about Wright, Granderson, Tulowitzki, Duda, Cuddyer, Murphy, Lagares, d'Arnaud, Pitcher? hmm.. Honestly I can't arrange those 9 players in a way that doesn't feel like slighting someone.

If your lineup has d'Arnaud or Lagares batting eighth, well, sir... that's a pretty savory lineup. EVERYDAY Granderson Murphy Wright Tulowitzki Duda Cuddyer Lagares d'Arnaud Pitcher vs. MOST LEFTIES Lagares Murphy Wright Tulowitzki Cuddyer Mayberry Granderson/Den Dekker d'Arnaud Pitcher I suspect, though, that Terry would go with something like... Lagares Murphy Wright Tulowitzki Duda/Mayberry Cuddyer Granderson d'Arnaud The increased lefty-rightyness of it probably appeals to him.

Are you really advocating den Dekker playing against lefties? As the roster seems to break, he's not even positioned to make the team right now, let alone get reverse-platoon starts.

I'd forgotten who our righty fourth OF would be (Campbell?). My thinking was, if we're going to start a guy who can't hit lefties, he might as well be defensively superlative.

I'm working from the assumption that none of our left-handed batters are an automatic sit against lefties, but my guess is when Granderson sits, it'll be in favor of Mayberry in right, and when Duda sits, it'll be in favor of Mayberry in left and Cuddyer at first. If both Granderson and Duda were to ride pine together, Mayberry would be in right and Campy at first.

Hints out there in reports that the Mets are strongly considering Colon for their opening day start, with the report stating that the choice has been narrowed down to him and one other non-specified pitcher. In a way I kinda am fine with Colon. means more starts for him which showcases him better, and he's the arm you care about least so cold weather and all that.

Denard Span had surgery on "a right core muscle" this past weekend, almost certainly a no-go for OD My guess is that this means Michael Taylor makes the team (he may have anyway) and that either he or Nate McLoud gets the start in CF.

Thanks for the update. McLouth had a really tough season with Washington last year, but Taylor has never done anything as a big leaguer. Reports have Taylor scheduled to get the bulk of the reps, but I'm going to pencil NMcL in there for now. Now with Rendon a certainty to miss OD and probably the whole series ("he's off to see Dr. James Andrews" are never good things to hear if you're looking toward a quick rebound) the Nats are talking about SS-turned-2B Yunel Escobar shifting to 3rd base with I guess Danny Espinosa manning 2B. We're not going to see Jayson Werth next week either.

I'm not giving up on Murphy until/unless events of today warrant it, but the nationals seem pretty set to be without Rendon and virtually Werthless. Flores seems to have jumped d'Arnaud in the batting order. He's earned it, but I get the notion that d'Arnaud is sensitive and carries small lights as a weight.. That's three starters sidelined on opening day, plus setup reliever Casey Janssen out with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Yeah, it's not a bad start time, just makes the wait longer is all. All teams are starting on Monday (except for Cubs/Cards Sunday night) so no fans have that really awful wait where you start full day or day and a half after everyone else. Wonder if they ever considered going to an all Sunday start? It would fit perfectly with all day-time starts that you'd want and would put it on a no-school/no-work day. Yeah tomorrow's Easter but it wouldn't be Easter Sunday every year and it's not like they don't play on that day anyway. And, although I wouldn't advocate moving schedules just to go around other sporting events, a Sunday kickoff would make it so OD falls between the semis and finals of the college hoopathon and assures that your 1st full Sunday sked doesn't clash with 'The Masters' like it often does now. The downside, I guess, is that having OD on a weekday gives each team a (probable) sell-out on a Monday or Tuesday in April, a day where you wouldn't ordinarily get one. Manfred seems willing to at least consider tinkering with these kinds of traditions if they no longer serve whatever purpose they originally had, maybe the season starting day is one of those things on his to-be-condered list.

They don't want to play Murphy in Texas because then if they do need to DL him they couldn't back-date it. As things stand now he's been playing only in minor league (read: non tickets sold) games so the team can essentially custom design the length of his DL stint if they so choose.

Right right, my point is if he's in Washington with the intent to have him in the OD lineup, it seems silly not to have given him the reps in Texas. Unless he's there for a gameday decision (which it can't be, since it needs to be finalized today). Or simply to be with the team Opening Day and then go back to extended Spring.

Doesn't seem silly to me. If he can get reps in minor league games without necessarily activating him, but not in major league ones, that's a healthy and strategic way to proceed.

"have him excel" would be a grossly exagerated version of what Lagares did as a hitter in 2014. His defense makes him a valuable contributor and his bat plays at that position, but a .321 OBP isnt "excelling" at leading off. Granderson wasn't much better, but the near 100 point difference in Granderson's BA & OBP tell me he is more likely to finish with the higher OBP this year as walk-drawing tends to be more consistent than hitting.
