And the big drama about reserve infielders — Muno? Reynolds? Both? — turns out to be... neither!
Murphy gets cleared for opening day, so the only slot one of them was going to steal was Campbell's. Not only don't they get his spot, but neither does Campbell himself, as he gets sent down, leaving the Mets with a four-man bench and a rare eight-man bullpen.
They were in danger of losing Gilmartin or Carlyle, so they carried them both, but carry Montero too.
Curious, huh?

You gotta figure that 8/4 split will be a short term one ... at least I hope it is.

Maybe it will be, to protect arms in the colder weather. But giving Terry another reliever is like giving a pyromaniac another book of matches. He'll burn through it in no time. I have a feeling that the extra offense may be missed.

Yes, that's the plan. They're thinking that the starters won't be going as many innings the first time or two through the rotation, so they want an extra guy in the pen.

It may also be a case of thinking that an exposed pitcher now would get swiped up immediately where in a few weeks they might be more likely to slide through waivers. Or maybe it buys time for to work out a trade for one of them.
Or maybe it's none of that, what do I know?

Still not a done deal, as per Rubin:
WASHINGTON -- Outfield prospect Cesar Puello clearing waivers and getting demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas technically never happened.
Puello successfully argued that he was injured, and the New York Mets ultimately had to rescind the demotion. The club announced that Puello had a "stress reaction" in his back and instead has been placed on the 15-day major league disabled list.
Injuries to 40-man roster players during the final 15 days of camp entitle the player to the major league DL and service time. That's why Noah Syndergaard was briskly shipped to minor league camp once he rolled an ankle last month.
Josh Edgin has been transferred to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot now that Puello is back on.
Puello would have to be placed on waivers again before being sent to the minors once he is deemed healthy. "

That makes sense. It's a rare sort of case, however. And man, stress fracture of the back isn't pretty.
I have a pet theory that I had ben working on that Campbell was only going down until he got a handful of games under his belt as a catcher, so he could come up and be a plausible emergency third-stringer. Obviously, if Mejia gets disabled, the eight-man pen gets shaved away before he could even take a bow on opening day for Las Vegas. So I guess, if they don't want to call him up just yet, they go back to eight-manning it, rather than call up Tovar or activating Muno, Reynolds, or Castellanos.
Most likely to step in, then, would be Goeddel.

I would think so too. Consistent with Terry's way, I would guess. Maybe he bats some ninth, too.
Amazing to see the team in first place and trying to aggressively transition to members of the coming generation at the same time.
And how about the seeming support for ceetar's assessment? Definitely not ready (.059 / .158 / .059 // .217 in 17 spring training trips), but may only need 20–30 more games in the minors (.370 / .402 / .506 // .908 in 20 games in Las Vegas).

Speculation is -- and, really, the only logical move it could be -- is to replace Kirk. They'd have to DFA him and expose him to waiver claims if they were to try and get him down to Vegas. That he's at such a low right now makes a trade unlikely (or at least unlikely to bring back anything) but it also means the odds on him going unclaimed and stashed in Vegas are higher. The other alternative, of course, is just a flat-out release. Would be a shame but Kirk will turn 28 in mid-season and this is a results oriented business. Ceciliani (no, auto-spell, not Cecilia!) their 4th round draft pick in 2009 out of mighty Columbia Basin College in Pasco Washington (Go Sockeye Salmons?) is three years younger and, unlike Kirk, is actually hitting right now even though just in the PCL.

Ironically, the Mets might have won in regulation if Terry had tried to get what utility there was left out Nieuwenhuis and sent him out to right in the late innings as a defensive sub for Grandy.
The run maybe scores anyhow, but Nieuwie probably has a better shot at Kozma than Granderson. More likely, there's a better chance that Kozma holds his base outright.
It's funny that Terry came to us with a rep as a coldhearted hardass, and will eventually leave with a rep as a guy with such psychological sensitivity that he didn't lift weak fielders for defensive subs, or move people from the position they've grown accustomed to, or even put a veteran at a position he hadn't played in a while, even in an emergency, without first asking permission, or waiting for the player to come to him and volunteer.

I thought about that too - both as the inning was progressing and certainly afterward. I think there's no way Kozma scores if Nieuwenhuis is out there. If fact I was trying to figure what percentage of RFs DON'T throw him out or hold him there. Impossible question to answer exactly but I bet it's VERY few. Problem was that Grandy's spot was hitting 2nd in the bottom half of the inning (he doubled) and you'd hate to proactively make that change on the off chance it would come to the throwing arm only to have it bite you back and shorten the bench before extra innings even started.

Agreed. The one move I probably would have made is Tejada for Flores.
I also think Kirk has a good chance to pick off that Molina line drive and end the game right there. With a better jump, a little more speed and a nice dive I think that play can be made. Certainly Lagares snags that ball.
I don't know that I've seen a batter as lost as Kirk. When Molina called for the curve ball down, you knew how it was going to end.
Someone said it in the IGT, when Kirk hits a foul ball we are pleasantly surprised.

He's a LH-hitting OF, so he replaces Nieuwenhuis.

But what's his role going to be? Does he replace Campbell, with Murphy going back to third and Ceciliani to second? Or does Ceciliani go to shortstop and Wilmer to second?
Or does Wilmer, the team's leader in homers and errors, sit? |
he's an outfielder. Lefty. He'll get some starts and primo pinch-hitting duties I'd imagine.

I saw "Brock Peterson" and thought "Brock Pemberton" a guy who seems unlikely to still be active.
Do Dilson and Travis really need to play five or six games in the minor leagues before they come back? I'm not so convinced of that.

And when I thought of Brock Pemberton, I pictured Ike Hampton, although they look nothing alike.
Also, it turns out that our Brock Pemberton is not the Brock Pemberton.
Okay, that's it. I'm done posting about Brock Pemberton.

Td'A got 28 PAs in the minors so it shouldn't be too bad (although 18 of them were at PSL and only 8 at Vegas)

So they're using both the paternity slot and the bereavement slot to activate Parnell and Herrera. Certainly taking advantage of everything available.

Indeed he does, because all his friends keep getting hurt or suspended: Black, Blevins, Carlyle, Edgin, Mejia, Montero, and Parnell have all done gone. Parnell's back and yay! But not so yay, because Goeddel is gonzo.
Anyways, it's good to have a backup infielder.

Re: Mets Roster, 2015

This is all as confusing as it is exciting. Rubaiyat is reporting that the Mets intend to add Nieuwenhuis to the big league roster, at least for the time being, before possibly (likely?) trying to sneak him through waivers again. But how? The team is seemingly shorthanded in every department save starting pitching. The obvious guy for him to replace would be Ceciliani, but how could you justify letting him replace the guy who replaced him, when the latter is just starting to show some batsmanship, and Neiuwie's fortunes haven't exactly reversed? And besides Ceciliani is already listed as tonight's starting center fielder.
I imagine there are going to be one or more additional transactions in the next few days, possibly before the day is over, what with a guy coming off the bereavement list, a guy coming off the paternity list, and Vic Black likely to relaunch.
I hope Lunchpail hasn't trashed his Nieuwenshirt.
Our two new names both display the Mets' affection for signing the distant relatives of their old Caribbean pitchers. Expect both to get assigned to the low minors (likely even the DSL, to start), and not be heard from again for a few years. They're both international signees, but expect announcements of draftee signings to start trickling into this space in the coming weeks.

Mets tweeting that Akeel F. Morris is on his way to New York and expected to be activated for tomorrow's game. Coming up all the way from St. Lucie (!!!)
They must've made the decision suddenly because he pitched today, earning his 13th save and lowering his ERA to 1.69. He's struck out 46 guys in 32 innings (12.93 per nine) and walked 14 (3.94).
Also late-breaking news: Mike Puma of the Post is tweeting that the Mets have discussed moving Syndergaard to the bullpen to make room for Steven Matz (and presumably to strengthen the pen). Whether the pending Morris promotion affects that idea (or whether that idea has legs at all, or was just something spitballed) is a matter of speculation.

I can't remember the last time a Met has jumped all the way from A ball to the majors. Did Gooden do that?
I can't see the Mets sending Thor to the pen. I don't think they'd mess with a guy that good.

I was wondering when they were going to promote Morris, but I didn't think he'd jump that far.
As for Noah in the bullpen, that's the kind of move when you have a pitcher with one or two excellent/ good pitches, but needs to work on a third to be a starter who can go long into games. I have no heartburn if that's what they're going to do. It shows they think he has major league stuff and can contribute at the major league level while he develops. Rule #5.*

Gooden pitched the entire year in A-ball in 1983 -- that was the infamous 15-4, 300 Ks in 191 IP season -- and then pitched in the playoffs that same year in AAA. By the following opening day he was with the big club having never experienced AA or AAA in the regular season.

Mets have six of the first nine draftees signed. Unfortunately, the missing three are the first three. Interesting is that some of them took seriously lowball offers — lowball, at least, compared to the recommended slot amount. I don't know what that all means, and I don't really want to know, as the whole system stinks, but maybe it means they're stockpiling money to go over slot with somebody who slid down based on assumptions of college commitments. Pure speculation, that.

That would be exactly the reason why you'd try to "save" bonus money off the cap, but a couple of those numbers -- specifically the two 5K bonuses and even the 20K one -- don't sound real, aka, I have no idea why 9th & 10th round draft picks would sign for that sort of offer.

Re: Mets Roster, 2015

I guess they're college seniors with little leverage.
Amazin' Avenue's conclusion with their profiles of the two guys are "He’s a sure bet to sign with the team and will probably sign cheap" and "He will definitely sign with the team."

Frayed Knot Jun 17 2015 07:01 PM
Re: Mets Roster, 2015

Those numbers still seem kooky. And, yeah, they may be college seniors with reduced leverage, but in the brief reviews of Met drafts that I read I don't remember seeing any comments along the lines of: 'why the hell are they drafting HIM that high?'
Also that 'bonus pool' thing only applies to the first ten rounds of picks. So unless they plan on vastly over-paying (as compared to slot) one of the remaining unsigned guys, those savings aren't anything (except saved money). If you take a flyer on some college-bound HS kid in the late rounds you can pay him whatever you want without concern to cap penalties.

Mets sign 28th rounder, catcher Anthony Dimino. If Anthony makes it to the big time, he'll be the first big leaguer out of Belmont Abbey College since Hal Haid (1919, 1928–1931, 1933).

Possibly. There's a rule that says a team can add a 26th player for doubleheaders. But because the first game is a completion of a suspended game, I'm not sure if this rule applies.

Re: Mets Roster, 2015

It apparently doesn't, as the rule includes a disclaimer that it only applies to doubleheaders scheduled 48 hours or more in advance, for some reason. And obviously this isn't a true double header under any circumstances.
Yeah, they can send down the guy they get the most usage out of, but it's the late innings of a tie game, so they are presumably going to use their best available relievers to close out this first game.

Yeah this isn't a DH (at least as far as I know) so, yes, they would be permitted to make a roster move between games. In fact I think they have to since I don't believe Matz has been officially added yet so the move that would have been made last night will be made this afternoon instead.

A warm welcome to the newest Mets property, Mickey Jannis.
Mickey, a 44th-round draftee of Tampa Bay in 2010, has the returns to affiliated ball for the first time since 2011. He comes most recently from YOUR Long Island Ducks where he's put up 1.18 ERA for the 2015 edition of Bud Harrelson's Water Fowl. You figure, "Oh, that's nice, but it's specialized and target relief appearances, right?"
No, NOT right. Mickey's appeared in 16 games, 11 of which have been starts. He's got 83 2/3 2015 innings under his belt, and that's enough to make that ERA legitski. How many innings have you thrown, Smartass?
Mickey reports now to the St. Lucie Mets, and if he makes it to Binghamton, well, it'll be as high as he's ever gotten in his 27 years of of earthly dwelling.
And you thought the Mets were sitting on their hands.

Have to admit, the redemption (or attempted redemption, depending on how you look at it) of Kirk Nieuwenhuis was not something I expected.
I wonder what Wally Backman says to guys who he sends up to the majors but ricochet back to him. He was called up at the end of 1980 along with Mookie and Hubie, but as those two established themselves as big leaguers, Backman was sent down for the better part of three years while the Mets futzed around with Brian Giles, which, in retrospect, was a strange way for the Mets to be treating a number one draft choice.
Wally grew so frustrated that he made noise about retiring, and had to be talked out of it, possibly by Davy Johnson.

So the Mets lineup now has two players they lost to other clubs but got back before the season ended. I wonder if that's happened before.

If they disable Matzimillion, as increasingly seems likely, I'm guessing they'll initially call up a bench player or reliever until his time in the rotation comes around, assuming they stick with the six-man
And with the day off, that time in the rotation won't necessarily be coming around soon.

Former second-round pick of the Twins (2006). Got into 21 games for Minnesota back in 2011. Released by the Braves in June and catches on now with the Mets.
Assigned to Binghamton, where tea-leaf readers may see him put there to shore up the team following the imminent promotion of Nimforto.

Re: Mets Roster, 2015

Rodriguez and Lawley are two players who have hit more than 20 home runs in a season in the minors (more than once). Aderlin did it in "pitchers'" leagues and home ball parks. And his strikeout totals were fairly respectable for someone who had "hit-'em-over-buildings" power. But the homers weren't as frequent as might have been projected. Too bad, I expected him to develop faster, and was thisclose to adopting him. Lawley is a career organization filler who plays multiple positions and Pena is a high average hitter with little power and a good outfield glove. I'm not sure who in the organization is ready to replace any of them.
Sad to see them go.

In the future, I'll conflate Dustin Lawley with Dustin Martin, another white center fielder who was productive lower down in the chain but found himself stalled after moving up.

Wondering who is replacing those poor released sheep in Bingo? Well, there was already a roster slot open, so four guys get added. Two of them are Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto returning from the Futures Game roster, but additionally added is the demoted Rainy Lara, who got hit hard in Las Vegas, and second baseman Brandon Kaupe, promoted all the way from Brooklyn, despite a .562 OPS.
Not exactly the kind of guy you want to replace an Aderlin Rodriguez with, but the Mets have their funny ways.

Intent on cornering the market on stray minor league third baseman, the Mets this afternoon Jonathan Galvez, late of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankee-Like Things. He even got into a game tonight for Binghamton before the ink was dry on his contract.
Likely fills the role left vacant by the departure of Aderlin Rodriguez.

No word on the transaction, but Dario Alvarez is reportedly on his way to Denver to break the ice on his 2015 season. About time that got this LOOGy of the Future into some games. They may need him for the post-season!
Duda may get DL'd, but maybe they demote one of their burned-out relievers like Robles. But here's a thought... why not send down Harvey, if only on paper, if you're going to make him miss a start anyhow.
In the same spirit, they could farm out Syndergaard. They wouldn't even have to burn an option.

Rubin on why Dillon Gee didn't get a call-up:
Perhaps more notable was who did not get summoned.
Right-hander Dillon Gee, who went 8-3 with a 4.58 ERA in 14 starts with Las Vegas after clearing waivers and getting demoted, was not invited to return. Gee had some harsh words behind the scenes for Mets execs about his treatment after getting banished to the minors, which probably cost him. He has the right to declare free agency shortly after the World Series, well before he would be non-tendered by the Mets on Dec. 2 anyway. |
I am having a tough time seeing why Gee would not be considered as a replacement for a Niese start, or as extra bullpen help, particularly if Carlos Torres is hurt. Gee had a 1.67 ERA in his final 4 starts with Las Vegas.

I'm also not getting how Gee is able to declare himself a FA right after the WS (as the article claims) seeing as how he had just 4+ years of service coming into this season and added considerably less than a full year since so would be well short of the six full seasons that one normally needs. I suppose it has to do with him being waived and then re-signed but I don't know the specifics of how that works.
Not that it really matters as the two parties seem to want to part with the other about as quickly as is possible, it's just confusing to me is all (as are so many things in this world).

Gee would need a roster spot, and as of now there is none.
I'm sure if there was an emergency, they'd DFA Ceciliani or somebody. They would in an emergency but won't unless they have to. They could cut Monell loose, as his tenure is likely over, but they probably want to keep a fourth catcher on the roster as a "break glass" precaution.

Interesting that the initial round of removees doesn't include the Stauffers and Monells who you know are going nowhere, but this middle class of guys — guys they've committed to not carrying, on the one hand, but might be needed in a later round, on the other. Damn that inside reporting, letting us know who has been sent to Florida.
So, 33 guys remain, of whom, one can be certain that Stauffer, O'Flaherty, and Monell are all but officially not to be included. Five hard choices remain. Ivy League choices.

Of those players: Young can't do anything but run, so to see him in a game would mean the Mets are losing. Campbell can't do anything other than consume oxygen. Recker can't do anything other than look fabulous. Parnell can't do anything other than throw gasoline on a fire. (see situational comment about Young)
So, by my process of elimination, I'd like to see Verrett make it. There will be a lot of good pitching in this series. Some games could go into extra innings. Logan can go more than one effective inning.

I don't get it. I disagree on all accounts.
Obviously they're among the weakest bets, and that's why they've been dealt out and won't be seen unless there is at least one injury, but that sort of absolutest hatedown is unjustified.

Maybe a tad hyperbolic for comic effect. No hate intended. But I'd still rather see Logan than any of the others. (If I have to see any of them at all)

I've never noticed that pinch runners are only used by teams that are trailing.
I'm not advocating for Eric Young to make the roster, but even if the Mets are losing, that doesn't mean they don't still want to win. I don't see what's wrong with having a speedy pinch runner if you're down by a run in the 8th inning.

Of those, I thought that Alvarez and Herrera might have had a shot, not at making the roster but at being among the nearer misses.

Of course, I should qualify that by saying I'd cut Gilmartin if Matz proves healthy. Otherwise, Matz goes and Gilmartin stays.

But how, you might ask, did the team make room for Reynolds on the 40-man roster? Well you might!

I'm not sure what that DFA business is about. The guy is a free agent at the end of the World Series, so they're pretty much effectively releasing him outright. But I imagine they have their reasons. Perhaps this allows him to clear waivers and get stashed on a minor league roster and held in reserve in case five pitchers suddenly go down simultaneously during the post-season.
