Re: Quiz in Honor of Matt den Dekker - Coming Soon - Watch 4

This quiz is gonna be so tough, I'm wondering whether I should just post the answers as a list. As soon as more than two correct answers get posted, I'm getting out my side-eye glance.

If I was taking this quiz, I'd only know three of the answers for sure. Otherwise, I'd be making educated guesses. Anyways, last season, Matt den Dekker had more at bats than any other Met who did not hit a HR. And that's the theme of this quiz. We're looking for the 10 players with the most career Mets at-bats who never homered for the franchise. Position players only, because, as you would imagine, the list is dominated by pitchers, and I'm not interested in listing the pitchers because they're, generally, not expected to hit HR's, even though some of them had enough Mets AB's to hit one or two. OK, what the hell -- for extra credit, gimme the Mets LHP and RHP record setters for this quiz category.

If you wanted to (eventually) give a hint, I would suggest giving the number of ABs for each of the players on the list. I'm sure I could name a ton of players who haven't hit any homers (hello, Chin-Ling Hu) but the ABs are what make this so tough.

I wonder if Jeremy Reed, from the recently-discussed JJ Putz trade disaster, qualifies. He was on the 2009 roster for the whole year and didn't hit any homers, I believe.

Bell missed the top 10 by a few players, and Benton only had 25 Mets AB's. The 10th ranking player on the list, Amos Otis, was homerless in 152 Mets AB's, edging Kevin Baez by one at bat.

Ruben Gotay teamed with Jose Reyes on a singular four-bagger feat on July 12, 2007.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Mets have had all sorts of adventures during their 46 seasons. What happened Thursday night, however, they had never done before.

Jose Reyes and Ruben Gotay opened with consecutive home runs for the first time in franchise history, and New York beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 Thursday night.

New York needed both drives, some daring baserunning by Lastings Milledge and six sharp innings from Orlando Hernandez to win its first game of the second half.

Reyes, fresh off his three-hit performance in the All-Star Game, led off the bottom of the first with his fifth homer and Gotay followed with his fourth, both against Bronson Arroyo (3-10). It was the third time this season that the Mets hit back-to-back homers but the first time in 7,238 games the club opened that way.

"I don't know if they were mistakes," Arroyo said. "I threw the pitch I wanted to Reyes. The other one [to Gotay] was a 2-1 breaking ball. I was surprised he hit it out of the park."

It was a strong start in the first game since New York dismissed hitting coach Rick Down and added Rickey Henderson to the coaching staff. It has not been decided whether Henderson or first base coach Howard Johnson will replace Down, but Johnson filled the role against Cincinnati.

New York also jettisoned 48-year-old Julio Franco, who hit only .200 in 50 at-bats with one home run and eight RBIs, and promoted Milledge from the minors.

A busy Thursday night.

I'm re-opening up this quiz because I left someone out of the top 10. I had my list of homerless Mets who might make the top 10, and when I culled those to make my top 10 list, I left this guy out. I remembered I left him out because, crazy Mets fan that I am, I was thinking about him just now in some other context, and realized that I left him out of this quiz. So Amos Otis is bumped out of the top 10 for this other guy.

Here's a hint: He came to the Mets with a World Series ring from some other org.

Fringey catchers who probably profiled best as backups, but were given semi-regular starting roles by bad teams, along with failed utility infielders, generally from Met teams who had other problems big enough that they didn't bother jettisoning failed utility infielders.

The outlier, to me, is Donnels, who at least had middling power through the minors. You'd guess he'd've run into one or two or ten.

Hit his lone Met HR against Mike Lacoss and the Reds on 6/18/79.

Among Mets who've homered only once for the franchise, Taveras has the most career Mets at-bats. By far.

Pretty good. Just one wrong answer in the whole quiz.

For extra credit -- Who's next on the list? His only Met HR is one of baseball's most famous.

One of my pet topics since the Lone HR reign of Mike Hessman, who was supposed to be a super slugger and got screwed out of a second HR on a video review (that was correct).

I think Abreu might have one-homered his way past Reyes, however. And maybe llasreiP ymmiJ had more ABs?

You're right. I missed Abreu. My source didn't include 2014 stats.

Maybe if Piersall had looked where he was going, he would have streaked past Argenis.

Mets with one and only one home run, thus my enthusiasm for this particular quiz.

Not a pet topic: sentences that don't need clarification.

Legend has it Piersall was immediately booted off the team by Stengel for his stunt, supported by the immortal line about there being room enough on this here ballclub for only one clown, but Piersall played another month as a Met.

His homer kicked off a great week, actually. Two days later he batted leadoff and doubled to spark the Mets to victory in the first-ever Mayor's Trophy Game, the one in which Yankee Stadium ushers couldn't control those awful rowdy Mets fans with their horns and banners and general insouciance.
