The WAR Games Efficiency Quiz

Here's what I did: I made a list of all the pitchers with a Mets career pitching WAR (b-ref) of 4.4 or higher. For each respective pitcher, I took their career Mets innings pitched and divided it by their Mets career pitching WAR and came up with a WAR efficiency rating. So, for example, Jacob deGrom has a Mets career WAR of 3.1 and 140 1/3 Mets innings pitched, for a WAR rating of 45.27 (140 1/3 IP divided by 3.1 WAR), which is pretty super-damn good, by the way. So deGrom gives the Mets one pitching win above replacement for every 45.27 innings he pitches. Obviously, the lower the rating, the more efficient the pitcher. WAR-wise. In this quiz, we're looking for the 15 Mets starting pitchers with the best Mets career WAR efficiency ratings. Starting pitchers only. Pitchers who were primarily relievers, including Armando Benitez and Billy Wagner, who have the 2nd and 3rd best WAR efficiency ratings, respectively, are not eligible answers. We used the entire Mets career stats of all starting pitchers on the list, so if deGrom made the top 15 (he didn't -- his career WAR is < 4.4), his relief outings, if any, would be included. Edgy's quiz taking rules apply. Scoring: Each correct guess is worth 200 minus that pitcher's WAR efficiency ratings. So deGrom would be worth 154.73 points (200-45.27) Deduct 20 points for each incorrect guess. Good luck.

Dwight Gooden's WAR efficiency rating, after his first two Mets seasons, (494 2/3 divided by 17.6) is an other-worldly 28.11.

Good quiz! Realized, as the likes of Darling and Koosman were nixed, that once the other elite guys were accounted for there was more merit in shorter stints that packed a punch.

The eligibility credentials makes it a funny quiz. Those bottom 10 were all decent pitchers. But mostly decent enough to keep floating on, and so look bad by that metric.

If I included pitchers with career WAR's < 4.4, then you'd see what bad is, and Jack Fisher wouldn't be near the bottom. You'd have to be decent just to accumulate a 4.4 career WAR. A pitcher who averaged less than a 1.0 WAR per season probably wouldn't get enough innings to get to 4.4. Unless he was the Rey Ordonez of pitchers.
