Juan Lagares deserves the Gold Glove because...

Juan a finalist, alongside Denard Span and Billy Hamilton, for NL CF GG.

Three nominees. Only one choice.

Re: Juan Lagares deserves the Gold Glove because...

The award is 75 percent based on input from NL managers and coaches and 25 percent based on defensive metrics. -- although which metrics and who determines them makes a difference.

As many as seven personnel per team may vote for the award, but voters are prohibited from selecting someone from their own team. -- are bat boys included in those seven? Seems like a bit of an odd method to me.

Plus, it's still a bit unclear as to whether the finalists are determined by the vote or whether some other method narrowed it down to three at each position and then the voting process whittles it down from there.

But we do know that Eric Young was a nominee last year, but not Lagares. So as far I'm concerned, the process is unimpeachable.

But it is a reader poll on ESPN New York. I wonder how the vote is going in the cities where the other two candidates play.

(The 4 % not voting for Legares must be MFY fans (or folks who have never watched him play).

Re: Juan Lagares deserves the Gold Glove because...

Span is quite good defensively and had a better year offensively - something which shouldn't matter but most think it does.
I didn't see enough of Hamilton to make a fair judgement but in small doses he didn't seem to me to be an outstanding OK gloveman, more just a good one who happened to be ridiculously fast and therefore able to out-run his own mistakes and seemingly the ball itself at times.

Lagares is the lone Mets finalist at his position.

What, no Murphy?!?

Combining this comment with those made about the World Series TV announcers in another thread, Harold Reynolds must have a high Q Rating among both network executives and people who voted for the Gold Glove.
Murphy made fewer errors at second base this year than Reynolds did in two of the years he won the Golden Glove. And Reynolds played at least half of his games on artificial turf, while Murphy didn't have that advantage (fewer bad hops on turf).

Still. Even Bench said Grote was a better catcher. He should have given Jerry one of his. Seriously though, Grote should have won at least one and it does amaze me that he didn't.

Shame his next appearance for me will be an embarrassing one.

This'll be up by tomorrow. Sneak peek. Was a bitch to make (400 frames had to be tweaked and cut), and I wish I did a better job with the cutting Fisk out part-but it was hard to make out. I think I better stay away from the cutout gifs. At least ones having that much come out of the border.
I also get a lil cheap thrill from a good gifcard.

It sucked that Topps didn't do individual games in the 76 set. IIRC they did a combo card. Fisk's homer gif or not would have to be a classic card.

Shit. That looks kinda light in here (looked okay in animation shop). Should I darken that? The source video was pretty weak, from youtube. But I tried to lighten it and change the tint. Might have gone too far :(

There's a creepy moment there where the pitcher walks in front of Fisk, but the pitcher's head is hidden by the frame and Fisk's upper torso is not. My brain hurts and my eyes twist out of my head in that moment, as all my understanding of a world that conforms to certain Euclidian laws falls apart.

Not including him was just me being lazy. Saved cutting out those frames. I did not think it would look so freaky & choppy.

I'd like to try that with a much better quality copy of the play. Maybe I have it on a DVD somewhere and can make my own copy. If I do that I'll try it the other way. But frankly, right now, I'm sick of looking at it.

Re: Juan Lagares deserves the Gold Glove because...

Congratulations to Lagares. He has been terrific since day 1 and it's great to see him get the recognition. The best part about this award is that Juan is the real deal and not just some poser-I-dive-on-regular-balls-to-make-Sportcenter-Jim-Edmondsy-type centerfielder.

Watching the post-season, it seemed like it was every other game that Hunter Pence and Aoki would stumble around and sprawl out on warning track flyballs and make the play look spectacular. The same flyballs Carlos Beltran would have camped under, then caught while thumbing through a good book.

Lagares does just the opposite. Like Beltran* before him, he makes the spectacular look routine. His highlight reels feature him getting a great jump, tracking it perfectly, then catching it in stride while making small talk with Granderson. Great job Lagares.

Now work on your hitting.

*Too many references to Beltran right? I know. I'm still trying to get over him. And I know it's especially wrong to bring him up in this thread. Like a guy who brings up his hot-but-pscho-ex-girlfriend-from-college at his wife's birthday party. I'm working my way through this. Give me time.

Re: Juan Lagares deserves the Gold Glove because...

An additional cool thing is that getting three wins of value out of his defense allows him time and reps to develop into a better hitter at the big league level. Carlos Gomez was a weak hitter for five years. Worse than Lagares. Of course, he came up younger.

And it's no easy row to hoe to maintain this level of defense for long. So yeah, hit.

It's more fun playing with the big boys. And, as far as I know, these gif cards will be forced to live forever in the digital realm, never attaining 3-D reality status. I mean, how do you print a .gif?

But these two do display some good leather. Describing a catch, that's one thing and always hard to do it justice. I love being able to just show em as well.

Remember, Force = Mass X Acceleration.
And Rusty was a lot of mass moving toward that wall.
