Kurt Loder Can't Find His Own Thread

Hi, I'm Kurt Fucking Loder, and I may be unemployed, because I can't find the thread I'm supposed to be reporting from. But that's not going to stop this intrepid reporter from bringing you music news. And I'm bringing it hot and steamy right to your table.

Earlier, in that missing thread, we reported how the future of AC/DC was in doubt, due to an unspecified health problem incurred by founding guitarist Malcolm Young. The band had previously vowed never make any lineup changes again after 1980 swap of late vocalist Bon Scott for the not-dead Brian Johnson, so this news was doubly concerning.

We've now learned that Young is suffering from dementia following a stroke, and his condition has shattered his short-term memory, leading his family to place him in a care facility. The band however, has changed their tack, and vowed to continue on, announcing the upcoming release of their latest album, Rock or Bust, which may or may not be in questionable taste, considering the news it accompanies. This reporter will say, however, that he's never known AC/DC to be concerned about questionable taste.

AC/DC has additionally announced their plans to start a world tour in support of the new collection in 2015. Replacing Malcolm in the lineup will be Stevie Young, nephew of both Malcolm and lead guitarist Angus Young. While that may sound like a torch being passed to a new generation, Stevie is a music industry veteran, and only a year younger than his Uncle Angus. Those Youngs are a big clan.

Malcolm Young.

A big clan, especially when you consider big brother George:

That story is just plain weird. I guess the three, Zander et al. may have been pissed that Bun E. Carlos was a vested member with equal say and shares but was no longer the touring drummer.

Yes, I would be cranked if my drummer was home with wifey getting paid the same as me who might be on the road half the year.

Bun E. negotiated a pretty sweet deal if this is true.

His bandmates may no longer want him, but the drummer for Cheap Trick will not yet need to surrender his claim the band has wrongfully denied him his cut of touring and merchandise money.

Hi, I'm Kurt Loder. A new book, by some dude who claims to have done 24 years worth of digging, claims that Sid Vicious is innocent of the murder of Nancy Spungen, and that facts point to two other suspects. This reporter is certainly wary of the police tendency to "close" a case by pinning a crime on a defenseless dead guy, but still maintains a healthy journalist's skepticism.

Here's rare footage of Sid with the Pistols during their brief 1978 US tour performing the transcendent "Pretty Vacant."

And we're back from our break.

Melancholy eighties icon and former Smiths frontman Morrissey has announced his
frequently interrupted touring schedule has been a result of ongoing treatments for
cancer. Typically flip about about the gravity of his situation, the enigmatic figure
responded, "... whatever. If I die, I die."

Perhaps accidentally invoking the late Warren Zevon, Morrissey added about his
continuing career, "I’ll rest when I’m dead.”

And so his tour continues, as he and his band promote his first new solo album in
five years, World Peace Is None of Your Business.

Malcolm until at least recently was considered to have been the "leader" of AC/DC, the guy who set their direction, had final say in personnel etc. Stevie is the son of the eldest Young brother (I think there were 9)

It's nutty. I just finished reading (and reviewing) a biography on AC/DC but it was largely about the author's opinion of how great they were and his attempt to straighten out details that previous biographers got wrong. There was nothing of Phil Rudd's criminal activity beyond the intimation he was sacked for drug use.

Yeah he was out for about a decade, replaced after a fistfight with Malcolm. The book I read is sympathetic to Chris Slade, the bald guy who drummed during the 'Thunderstruck' era even though he was around for a very shoirt period of time.

Rudd I believe was their 3rd drummer but the longest tenured, they've had 2+ since and I guess are beginning again with a new one.

Hi, I'm the resurrected Casey Kasem. The producers couldn't find
Kurt when they needed to make this important update so they asked
me to fill in.

Surviving members of the original Santana --- veterans of the lineup
from the band's first three albums --- have announced they are back
in the studio with plans to release new music and tour again. This
lineup is the fullest return since original vocalist Greg Rolie and then-
wunderkind guitarist Neil Schon split off in the very early seventies to
form Journey. All accounts say the gathering was initiated by Schon,
who has his plate full with a completely revitalized Journey returning
to their high-grossing stature, and a solo album due in May. (Greg
Rolie putting aside his commitments to The Greg Rolie Band was, this
reporter suspects, likely not as big an issue.) Schon, for his part, says
his desire to work again with his mentor Carlos Santana was
sparked by the return of the old camaraderie as their paths regularly
continue to cross in the San Francisco veteran rock dude community.
(One imagines barbecues at Huey Lewis's house, and Marty Balin
throwing charity bowling tournaments.)

Apart from guitarists Santana and Schon and vocalist Rolie, the
reunion will include Woodstock vets Michael Shrieve (drummer),
Jose “Chepito” Areas (percussion) and Michael Carabello
(percussion). (Latin drummers and percussionists apparently live longer
than British ones.) Original bassist David Brown died in 2000.

We'll be back with album release and tour dates. Until then, keep your
feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. And remember
that U2 is from England and who gives a shit?!

Hello, I'm Tabitha Soren, sitting in for the Load, Kurt Loder.

Phil Rudd, drummer for aging metuhl powerhouse AC/DC, who,
as previously reported in this space, recently made bail with regard
to serious murder solicitation charges (and are there any other
kind?) insists that, fuck you, he's still in the band. Not one, not two,
but three money quotes appear below.

[list=1][*]"Everyone listens to the wrong people. They should listen
to me. I'm a good guy - and a pretty good drummer, by the way.
Ask Angus; he'll tell you."
[/*:m]
[*]"This has just been a big ball of cheese, and all the rats are
gathering and having a piece. That's just life. But that's not who
I am."
[/*:m]
[*]"I'm going back to work with AC/DC - and I don't care who
likes it and who doesn't."[/*:m][/list:o]

We'll be back with more news later, including Billy Corgan getting
pissy about tepid reviews for the new Smashing Pumpkins album
being the only notice the album has garnered at all, and the mystery
of who's going around the internet pulling down the Paul Stanley
Folgers commercial.

Lung cancer.

That howl of his and the caricature he probably was treated as even before Belushi did him made him seem at times like a novelty artist, until you realized none of his records qualified as a novelty record --- or even sounds dated (except maybe for "Up Where We Belong" and its cassette-era production values). Everything stood on its own and defined him as a pretty committed-assed singer.

I had a cassette called James Brown and Friends, and all the other artists JB sang with on it sounded tired and worn and played out and creatively lost and trading on what was left of their names, except Cocker, who sounded as fresh as ever... in his distinctive worn out and broken way.

Hello again, everybody. I'm famed rock shmoozing personality Kurt Loder.

Darryl Hall and John Oates are currently on a press blitz to prepare for the cinematic
release of their new film Hall & Oates Live From Dublin. This reporter recalls the
duo/group's run from late 1981 to 1984, when they somehow released a then-record
(still-record?) eight straight number one hits Even then — even then, I say —
a Hall & Oates show warranting a cinematic release was virtually unfathomable.
Unfathomable.

But here we are, 30 years later, with a grand total (unless this reporter is missing
something) of zero hits in the interim, and these two are getting a big screen
treatment.

And yeah, it's apparently going to be a one-night-only thing, and in February, the
coldest month for film releases, and it's all a gimmick pre-launch event for the DVD
and Blue Ray releases. But come on.

This reporter is left with the dim realization that, after a lifetime of covering the rock
and the roll, he cannot understand the current marketplace whatsoever. Human beings
are going to drive out on a cold winter's night to go to a multiplex haunted by thinning
herds of surly teens to stare at projections of sixty-something Hall & Oates and reminisce
about that time that we were all young and bored stiff by "Family Man"? Really?

Anyhow, enjoy this video of the Hall & Oates band shredding like
their lives depend on it.

That's the speculation as Paul delivers a cryptic message to his fans, one letter at
a time, during the latter stages of the long-awaited reunion tour by his seminal band,
the Replacements. Another in a series of internal detonations and false steps that has
marred the Placemats since the firing of founding guitarist Bob Stinson, or a genius
social media ploy? All may be revealed after tonight's pair of shows at London's

Let it be further known that nothing wows the ladies like a lucite-bodied guitar. Paul's

I'm Kurt Loder, and I thought I was a dude.

I thought that, but then I realized I had nothing

festival gig in Gothenburg Sweden this evening,
Grohl fell of the stage during the band's second

Realizing his predicament, he asked another band
to come on stage while he went to the hospital to
get taped up, before quickly returning to play his
band's set, effectively pulling a Sonny Rollins-at-

I'm Kurt Loder, and forget the Rock 'n' Roll Hall

Anybody else read about the Rush fan who appeared on Jeopardy! with Neil Peart's drumsticks stuck in her back pocket for luck?

When she hit the Daily Double, she wagered $2112.

Apparently, living in the limelight is the universal dream.

I saw it while watching the show yesterday.

Alex Trebek seemed beside himself when she wagered $2112 on the DD.

Re: Kurt Loder Can't Find His Own Thread

Brother C assured me that 'Rush-world' "exploded" over this. Rush fans tend to think (with some justification) that they're ignored by the larger world and therefore cling to what pop-culture mentions they do get.

He, btw, saw his 49th & 50th Rush concerts on this past tour (likely their last - and therefore his last too).
The theme of the tour -- or at least the shows he saw -- was a reverse retrospective meaning that the songs started with the most recent and went backwards in time. And along with this, the sets, equipment, and media backdrop got less elaborate as time went back until, by the end of the show, they made it look as if they were playing with minimal amps perched on chairs in a HS gym.

Sorry to interrupt your morning, but the following bulletin just crossed our desks here at MTV news:

Sammy's Island brand embodies the spirit of stress-free island living and features a wide variety of stylish, well-crafted products

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Aug. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sammy Hagar has partnered with full-service branding, licensing and social media marketing company Epic Rights and PROMINENT Brand + Talent, a global brand management and development consortium, to launch the worldwide brand strategy and to develop a wide-ranging licensing program for Hagar's Sammy's Island lifestyle brand.

"For me, it started the moment I first stepped onto the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in 1982. And again in Maui, Hawaii," stated Hagar. "There's something about the island lifestyle that just makes your soul blissful and keeps you coming back for more. It's the feeling you get from being in paradise and there's no denying it. It's this quality of life and island vibe that I set out to infuse into Sammy's Island products. And my goal is to take you there—a state of mind that brings it all together. So welcome to my 'Island' – now let's get the party started!"

"Sammy's Island presents an ideal opportunity for us to collaborate with Sammy and PROMINENT Brand + Talent to develop a licensing program around a brand that is more about lifestyle than music," explained Epic Rights' CEO Dell Furano. "PROMINENT has very distinct areas of expertise within brand marketing and strategic licensing, as well as the resources and relationships that will deliver a broad range of products across key categories quickly and will effectively communicate the essence of the Sammy's Island brand to consumers around the globe."

Sammy's Island is described as a visual blend of the best of Cabo and Maui's tropical, laid-back, lush and vibrant patterns and colors that instantly transport consumers to the island life but with a splash of Sammy's Rock 'n' Roll sensibility. Products will be stylish, finely crafted and designed to embody the spirit of stress-free, island-style living. Product categories will initially include outdoor furniture, electronics, food, entertaining, beach wear, footwear, table top, jewelry and wall art, among others. Todd Gallopo, CEO & Creative Director of creative branding and design agency Meat and Potatoes, Inc., will spearhead the design of the brand.

"For the past 17 years I have been lucky enough to work with Sammy on everything from albums to books to tequila, shaping his brands as an artist and entrepreneur. We've crafted some visually stunning projects together that have garnered a Grammy® nomination and several spirit packaging awards," stated Gallopo. "Sammy's Island is the real deal, and Sammy lives it to his core. I couldn't be more excited for Meat and Potatoes to visually bring Sammy's Island to life and capture the essence of the lifestyle he lives so honestly."

"We're very excited to join forces with the Epic Rights team to develop a broad spectrum of product lines and key strategic retail partnership opportunities to build the Sammy's Island brand globally," added Prominent Leader Dan Levin. "Our strength in brand development lies in the details and by providing an extremely personalized and unique blend of services which support the brand's message and grow consumer demand and loyalty."

We here at Kurt Loder Can't Find His Own Thread are pleased to announce
estranged Guns 'n' Roses frontmen Axl Rose and Slash are reported to be
on speaking terms again after two decades of sometimes vicious mutual
animosity. What this has to do with the exodus of DJ Ashba and Ron
"Bumblefoot" Thal from G'n'R's most recent lineup, one can only speculate,
but we here at KLCFHOT News can conclusively squelch any and all rumors
That Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg brokered the ceasefire between
the former bandmates.

Keep watching for more.

In an announcement sure to thrill dozens, in-
cluding the Crane Pool Forum's own d'Kong76,
at least three oldtimey members of the Bay
City Rollers have announced plans for a
reunion tour.

The tartan teenyboppers have put the acri-
mony of past decades behind them and
promise a thrilling experience for all their
surviving fans.

When asked what had changed over the
years, frontman Les McKeown said, "Well,
my manager received an overture to book
us to play the Sterling Awards ceremony.
I could have just grabbed a bunch of mates
and played as 'Les McKeown's Rollers' as I
have in the past, but this was the bloody
Sterling Awards, you know? So I called
Alan and Woody and they felt the same."

Asked about the remaining members of the
band's classick lineup, McKeown added,
"This will be a Bay City Rollers tour, so
of course they're invited, but we just
don't know where they are. We're current-
ly searching the rosters of musicians u-
nions, Glaswegian dive bar bands, and
frankly cemeteries. I think I saw David
Paton playing with Icehouse a few years
ago. Gosh, thirty years ago?. Where
does the time get to?"

This is Kurt Loder coming from you live from the Manhattan offices of Fucking Serious Rock Journalism
Illustrated
. Breaking news today is a new "unauthorized but full-access" bio of Tom Petty revealing
that the king of the Heartbreakers spent the decade of the nineties as a heroin addict.

Tom, m'boy, didn't everybody?

The author is one of the Del Fuegos who opened for TP&tH in the 80's.

From what I understand, the bio is "unauthorized" with Petty's knowledge, consent and approval. Petty thought using the term "authorized" implies that it has been edited by the subject and he didn't want that for this book.

It sounds like Stan Lynch will get some page time, too.

That almost reads like Petty was too lazy to read.

Anyhow, me gustan Del Fuegos.

Re: Kurt Loder Can't Find His Own Thread

I'm Kurt Loder with news from the Journey front: Klassik-era drummer Steve Smith has re-joined the legendary rawkers for their tour with Dave Mason and the Doobie Brothers.

Smith is rejoining the group for the second time and first since 1998.

Journey has been seeking a new stickman since the arrest of thumper Deen Castronovo on charges including menacing and attempted rape of an ex-fiancee this summer. Castronovo spent 15 days behind bars, 75 days in drug rehab and was sentenced to four years probation since the incident, copping in October two counts of fourth-degree assault, two counts of menacing, one count of coercion and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. It was the tattooed-tom-tomer's second unlawful tangle with the same woman: A 2013 arrest required he undergo anger-management classes.

Journey fired Castronovo in August, replacing him briefly with Omar Hakim to complete their Canadian tour.

I had missed the news about Castronovo. He's great in the movie, in an unintentional way.

Not to dis Journey, but Omar Hakim is a pretty fantastic pinch-hitter whose jazz chops may go a little wasted in that outfit. Smith, for what it's worth, is one of rock's last big traditional grip drummers. Also a jazzer, by training.

Maybe he figured it's his turn to trash Glenn Frey instead of the other way around.

He totally wins that argument in the movie. He kicks Henley's ass too.

This tour is coming to our new amphitheater along the shores of Onondaga Lake, which opened back in August with a single show (and it was some shitty country act that I would not attend). Thinking of picking up a lawn seat, going for $40 or so, as much to enjoy the venue as the bands.

I saw the Doobies maybe ten years ago and they put on a solid show.
