Tough having a birthday or holiday so close to when
one is feeling ... your brothers and sisters at the 'pool
are thinking about you.

Sad way to spend a birthday, but a great day to honor the ones who gave you life.

Re: Birthday Thoughts For soup

Hey all -

Sorry that I haven't been around here for a while. It has nothing to do with any of you guys. It' s mostly because I've become very disenchanted with the Mets. Last season was the first that I can remember that I didn't attend even one game. I don't think I even watched an entire game on TV either. I've just gotten really tired of spending my money on an organization that I genuinely don't believe appreciates its fans or reinvests sufficiently in the team. Hopefully that changes but until then….meh.

Cooby sent me an email and told me that you all posted some nice thoughts for me for my birthday and my father's passing. I wanted to thank you all for that. It means a lot, truly.

It was a pretty difficult last month. My dad went in for what was supposed to be an operation that he would survive. They were removing a tumor from his lung. Being that he was 78, a 3 time cancer survivor and in the early stages of emphysema there was a risk but the surgeon felt strongly that he would come through it. And he did. It was an infection that developed post-op (possibly pre-op but we'll never know) that ultimately did him in.

Anyway, my sister and I were able to be with him when he died. Very emotional but it was good that we were with him. Not unlike many families both my sister and my relationship with our father was a little complicated. it was nice for all three of us that we were there at the end.

And yes, I turned 50, 3 days after he died which was 2 days before the funeral so that was pretty weird. As I posted on Facebook there was also some family drama involved. What seminal family event would be complete without just a little of that?

And yes Original Met Roger Craig who - I've noted here before - had become a golfing buddy of my father's over the past few years, stood up and spoke at the funeral, said some really nice things about my dad. So regardless of whether this moribund franchise ever turns it around and wins back my affections, I'll always have that pretty cool Met content dovetail a bit with thoughts of my dad.

Thanks again for the nice thoughts. I'll try and make a better effort to come around more whether or not the Mets care about me.

That's right....

and
Met content dovetail a bit with thoughts of my dad

I'll bet a lot of us can trace our Mets love back to our dads. Even if they didn't know Roger Craig :)
