Crane Pool War of the Superheroes

Nov 17 2014 08:56 PM

To add warmth and excitement to your offseason, Vic Sage and I collaborated to come up with a decidedly riveting and yet utterly pointless diversion --- the Crane Pool War of the Superheroes.

Basically, approximate four times each day through the cold weather months, you will see a poll in which you are challenged to pick the better superhero of the two choices given. Your standards are your own --- pick the more powerful, the more relatable, the sexier, the savvier, or the more plausible. But PICK! Because if you don't vote, the earth ends up defended by some loser like Gambit or Vibe or the Red Bee.

Basically I came up with around 100 names, ranked/seeded them according to my arbitrary standards of what I figured the general consensus of their relative merits might be. Vic took over and rounded out the list to a bracket of 128. Whenever we differed on standards, I most usually deferred to him.

[list][*]Vic says stick with supes who debuted in the comics, instead of other modern media. Sorry, Darkman. Apologies, Shadow. Tough break... Captain Carvel![/*:m]
[*]But... characters borrowed from mythology and pre-modern media, they get to stay. Hello, Thor![/*:m]
[*]I wanted to stick with Marvel and DC folks, but Vic expanded the list to include small shop heroes who've achieved a high profile. Congratulations, Dark Horse fans.[/*:m]
[*]It's an individual sport. If your favorite vigilante is known as part of a team, he or she is flying solo here. No more hiding behind Collossus, Nightcrawler. You're on your own.[/*:m]
[*]Totally subverting everything, Vic peppered the brackets with longtime Supervillains, some of whom have had moments on the good side of the line, and some of whom, if they are on a path to redemption, it's the first I've heard about it. Feel free to vote for these scoundrels as you will. Me, I'm holding out for a hero.[/*:m]
[*]While my original list threw all the guys and girls and their tights into a single bucket and seeded them according to their general profile, Vic has segregated them by intuitive groups. Mutants go with mutants. Godlings go with godlings. Silver Agers will more or less find themselves pitted in the early rounds against Silver Agers.[/*:m][/list:u]

Let the carnage begin.

Let me just clarify here. For myself, if nobody else, I think

If I'm reading Vic's final bracket correctly, he's made a second bracket entirely of 64 Super-villians. So we can run them as a parallel tourney.

I think the latter. But the former may certainly be a factor in the latter, depending on your values and lifestyle choices.

download comics? Oh you poor soul.

You can't feel the silky smooth gloss on the cover of a download, you can't smell the fresh ink and pulpy paper, or clip the coupons or cut out the Marvel Stamps and make a poster out of them, or write your name on the insider cover so your friend doesn't steal it from you, or steal a bunch of them from Coopey's Corner (the drug store near your middle school, where they don't check your jacket after you buy 1 book to find a dozen others down your pants). You can't get an ink smudge on your fingers from a download. And you can't hide under your covers, holding a flashlight in one hand, staring at the full-sized, two-page centerfold spread of Kirby's 4-color galactic imagination on a download.

Download... Jesus H. Christ.

okay okay I'll get off your lawn .geeze.

I have a billion hobbies and no money. I enjoy the stories and would love to read some more of them, but I'm just not going to invest the time and money to regularly go to a comic store and collect comics to sit in a box. I was, and remain, more of a story over the art type fan. so while two-page centerfolds are certainly fun..

Anyway, does anyone do this? My brother recommended the xcomics app but I never really pursued it.

Or how about this, download or not, what stories should I pursue? should I just pick say Spiderman and follow along with the new releases, or is there some trade-paperback style stories that I should go back and look for?

One of the great things of being the parent of a budding artist (other than the absolute pride in her talent), is the ability to go with her to the local comic shop every week or two when she picks up her pull list.

There is nothing like the aroma of a new comic book, and the feel of it in your hands, but Vic said it oh so much better.

Ceets, i get the cost and convenience factor. Really, i do. Particularly with how overpriced comics are nowadays. But its just a qualitatively different experience. I've tried it. It sucks.

And if you get rain in your iphone, you're fucked, buddy. And instead of ruining a .25 cent comic (or now, a $2.50 comic), you've ruined a $300 phone.

As to recommendations, yes, trade reprints are the way to go. But the full color ones, not the B&W "essentials" compilations. You need 4 colors or don't bother. And you can choose to explore a single character through its history, or to follow particular writers and/or artists through their work on different characters, or to explore all the books of a particular period, or genre, or publisher. There's lots of ways to skin the cat. But keep it off the phone, goddamnit.

my phone (and iPhones) are $600+. but mine is waterproof.

It's not a qualitative experience. People say that same about books versus kindles. they're wrong. (well, they're objectively wrong anyway)

But yeah, trade paperbacks or downloads, was looking for 'hey, this char is interesting'. But maybe I'll start with the winner of the crane pool war.

How many more first-round matchups remain? I was thinking of some characters who have yet to appear in the competition, and I thought of quite a few possibilities:

Angel, Beast, Black Panther, Black Widow, Colossus, Crystal, Human Torch (Jim Hammond), Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Invisible Woman, Luke Cage, Mar-Vell, Medusa, Quicksilver, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Sub-Mariner, Thing, Toro, Valkyrie, Vision, Wasp.

DC
Booster Gold, Cyborg, Deadman, Elongated Man, Guy Gardner, Plastic Man, Robotman, Spectre, Starfire, Wonder Girl.

I'm kinda hoping that Airboy was included. There's also Hellboy, and Crossfire, and probably many others that I once knew about but have since forgotten.

Yeah. I caught the first two parts earlier this week. I went through a brief phase for a few years covering the end of elementary school and some junior high school where I collected comics. I was strictly a DC man (kid) and to this day, know very little about the Marvel universe other than the most popular stuff. I was pleasantly intrigued to discover this Steranko feller while viewing the doc -- intrigued enough to want to dig up some of his ground-breaking stuff.

In my comic book days, I loved these books:

Steranko was great. I have some autographed pieces from him. I loved his long NICK FURY run (starting in Strange Tales), his brief runs on X-MEN and CAPTAIN AMERICA, his SHADOW book covers, and his 2 volume history of comics.

i've got this poster autographed by Steranko,

plus this one, too:

here's the wraparound covers for his 2 volume "history of comics":

and some of my favorite Nick Fury covers:

Here's are some typical Steranko pages, featuring his innovative use of panels, color, form, texture, line and text, blending 30s surrealism 40s noir, and 60s Op Art with silver age superhero energy and composition (like Dali, Warhol and Kirby thrown in a blender owned by Mickey Spillane):

and his hyper-sexual pulp-style SHADOW covers:

Thanks for the links. Even though I collected DC superhero comics in the Bronze Age, I think I read more of the older stuff than what was then the present. So even though Steranko was outputting stuff while I was an active collector, I missed that boat. Also, a lot of the DC stuff I was reading now seems like it all took place in Pleasantville compared to what Marvel and Steranko were doing.

I'm interested in picking up some Steranko collection or anthology. I've always had a thing for fine or commercial art or illustration; the art form that so-called "real artists" snub their noses at (even if does pay the bills). My only reservation is wondering if I'll still be able to enjoy comic books after all these years.
