It's claws vs. light in this battle of sometimes X-Men teamies. As we look at the Bronze-Era X-Mutants bracket of the Marvel Conference, one thing is for sure: both of these heroes know how to rock a leather jacket.

I was confused as Dazzler's name in your little chart is still "Spider-Woman."

You should also have a column detailing each guy's weaknesses as that could tip the balance in some of these battles.

It's a winning name.

Marketing is heroic too!

Dazzler takes the early lead!

Cool thing about Dazzler is that, while she paid the bills with disco, what she really liked singing was Elvis Costello-inspired nu wave.

Also a Rattle & Hum fan.

I'm enjoying the Cooby Take on these much more than I should.

As well-worn as Wolvie has gotten-- between the comic overexposure and the movies and the more movies and the cartoons-- Dazzler's a spunky, tube-topped party decoration.

unfortunately for dazzler, while i would love to vote for her against the similarly overexposed wolverine, i cannot. i shall instead vote for the dude with the, as minimm calls them, "chingers"

The jacket gives her dignity. I liked her eighties look, as egregious as it was to give her a painted butt in place of trousers.

Frank Springer drew her like a boss, though.

Wolverine and the "new X-men" was the point at which i stopped reading Marvel... that late Bronze age anti-hero stuff (wolvie, punisher) set the stage for more interesting stuff at DC... WATCHMEN, DARK KNIGHT, V, SANDMAN, etc, so i jumped ship over to the evil empire and gave up my no prize. I was no longer a true believer.

And DAZZLER is HOT, especially the way that the great Frank Springer drew her. But no, sorry. I can't vote for a disco queen.

Went with Wolverine, but barely. Dazzler was a big part of my favorite comics - the mid 80's to early 90's x-men from around the time of Xavier's disappearance through at least the split into the x-men/uncanny xmen books. wolverine in this period was annoying and he remained that way until the 90's xmen cartoon before promptly going back to annoying me in the movies. but he is an iconic character and Dazzler has faded into mainstream nothingness if she was ever even there

Wolverine. I understand the backlash; he's been way too overexposed. But he was one of the most original characters Marvel created after the burst of energy that they had in the Silver Age. During the Claremont-Byrne years of X-Men, he was a highlight. True, there was a lot of nonsense that came later on, but just about every long-running character has a period where they're misused. I'm voting for the original, fresh version of Wolverine, who should be very hard to beat. Dazzler, although sexy, was never an important or notable character.

And it is, in fact, a tie. Does it go to Wolverine, as Vic suggests, or should we make each of the characters write a song parody?

One overly complicated strategy would be to make the upstream matchup a round robin. Wolvie vs the next guy, and dazzler vs the next guy. Whoever has the most total votes advances.

I can see using the seeding method to give Wolverine a victory over Dazzler, but what if there's a future round where Superman ties with Batman? Or Hulk ties with Thor? In a case like that, it's not at all obvious who should have been the higher seed.

I like the idea of having Wolverine and Dazzler each have a play-in round against two of the first-round winners. Their opponents would have to be the lowest seeds (however that's determined), because a high seed should be exempt from the extra battle.

This method would work (I think) in every round except for the ultimate final matchup. If that ends in a tie, then I'd say that we have co-winners.

Re: Crane Pool War of the Supes, Round 1: Wolverine vs. Dazz

i don't think you need a play-in with addeed jeopardy. just play each of dazzler and wolverine against the next matchup ahead of them. the guy they'd face if they'd won stratight up.

if each matchup nets 20 votes, then it's easy. whoever totals the most votes in each of their two matchups wins.

if the next guy they would face is, for instance, bishop, and wolverine beats "bishop" 18-2, and dazzler beats "bishop" 14-6, then wolverine (28 votes), would be the winner, and would advance to the third round. past dazzler (24) and "bishop" (8).

if "bishop" beats wolverine 18-2, but loses to dazzler 15-5, then dazzler (25 votes) advances past "bishop" (23) and wolverine (12)

if hte subsequent matchups have different than 20 votes total, then you just normalize them where 1 is the total number of votes in each matchup and, in the wolverine/dazzler matchup, each scored a 0.5.

Re: Crane Pool War of the Supes, Round 1: Wolverine vs. Dazz

the one potential downside is if wolverine and dazzler both tie "bishop", you carry that three-way-tie up one more level. so long as eventually, the tie is broken, the contest moves along merrily.

it also provides a framework for subsequent ties. except for hte final round. no idea what to do then. lets not build that bridge, so we never have to cross it.

If the final round ends in a tie, I say we just declare co-champions. Like Keith Hernandez and Willie Stargell.
