Another interfamilial throwdown comes to the fore in our superhero war. Batwoman was pretty much conceived explicitly to counter accusations of the Seduction of the Innocents era --- to create heteronormative counterpart for Batman and take the eyebrow-raising spotlight off his relationship with Robin. But she has certainly developed her own reason for being over the years, and irony being irony, ended up being perhaps the first big shop supe to come out as a same-sexer.

Batman, is... well, he's Batman.

This matchup comes from the Batfamily bracket of the DC/Indie Conference.

Different lass.

Like Spider-Woman, Batwoman's another surprisingly interesting character (especially post-"New 52" reboot; her series is one hell of a read).

But, yeah.

Gotham and Metropolis are obviously analogs for NYC, but recent atlases have placed them in specific places and even mapped Gotham street by street.

I was going to say this. Gotham was a nickname for New York coined by Washington Irving. How can it be any place other than New York?

If Gotham being anywhere other than New York is the only thing that doesn't seem real about super hero comics, then ..... I dunno.
But that came as a shocker to me, too.
Let's just have it taken over by the Port Authority so it can be part of both states.

There's a lot of different perspectives folks have on it. One theory says Metropolis is New York by day and Gotham is New York by night. Or Gotham is brick-and-mortar New York and Metropolis is glass-and-steel New York. But they've both been pretty much considered to be stand-ins for New York, and when the Reeve-era Superman films were set in Metropolis but shot in New York with clear New York landmark buildings everywhere, nobody said boo.

But the problem is that the adventures of DC superheroes have often taken them to actual New York. So if New York exists in their universe, and you can't just drop Gotham in at the end of the Hudson River, where the heck is at? As a post-industrial Northeast city with a harbor, a couple of hundred miles down the coastline in New Jersey is the logical setting.

No continuity is going to be upset if Tom's River is displaced, as there are no superheroes operating there. Bruce Springsteen is probably tickled to think of Freehold as the fictional location of Gotham.

newark would've made a bit more sense than point pleasant or egg harbor, though, and especially relative to the delaware bay on jersey's backside.

probably too close to new york city to really differentiate itself, as a separate metropolitan area, but still. maybe camden can be our gotham instead...

Well they blew up the coast in Coast City last
Night now they blew up GL's place too
Down in New York they're getting ready
For a fight-- yeah, I'm surprised it ain't New York, too!

Now there's trouble flyin' in from penguin guns
And the D.A., yeah, he can't decide
Which way to run to dodge them question-mark cannons
Flip a coin, but both sides are scarred heads, a rigged broke-down ride

Yeah, Robin died baby that's a fact
But maybe rewrite that past and-- hey!-- he comes back
Put your yellow belt on fix your cowl up pretty and
Meet me tonight down in Gotham City

Well I beat up on Bane and put the Penguin away
But I got jets and tech ready for when the Joker comes to play
And the Scarecrow just knocked off the Central Trust
Hope there's room down at Arckham for the both of us

Mom and Dad died baby that's a fact
And like Johnny Cash I became the Man in Black
Put the bat signal on and let your cape fly pretty
Meet me tonight down in Gotham City

Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
Oh-oh-oh... I'm your match perfected, no child's toy/no longer needed in your employ-- what am I?

Re: CPF War of the Supes, Round 1: Batman vs. Batwoman

I was eight years old and my hands were cold, as I walked with my mom and dad,
Down crime's alleyway, we strolled that day, hand in hand
Our butler had to go far, so he could fetch the car and bring it back around,
But before he got back, there was a thunder crack, and death had come to Gotham town,
This was my own town,
This was Gotham town
This was my hometown

Though i survived, my parents lost their lives at the wrong end of a gun,
The killer stared at me, and started to flee,
There was nothing I could have done.

I cried with all my might, going home that night, wishing i could run
But Alfred just said "Bruce, it's time for bed"
and the day was done in Gotham town,
My own town,
Gotham town,
My hometown.

I wander down empty hallways now, and empty rooms,
It seems like there is no one near who lives here in this tomb.

Tom and Martha Wayne had widespread fame, and no one wished them ill
But then Joe Chill, with no reason to kill, put them in the ground of Gotham town,
It was their own town,
It was Gotham town,
Their hometown.

I couldn't sleep that night, and since the moon was bright
I wandered the grounds outside,
I fell into a hole and discovered my soul, as i fell out of the light,

I had come alive, knew that i would thrive, in the darkness of the knight
And so I don the cowl, and begin to prowl, and i fight the fight in Gotham town,
This is my hometown

I had a friend was a big-time lawyer
back in his day
He could take a slip-up by you
Your own words, make you pay, boy
Saw him the other night at 22 2nd
Looked half-dead, from what, I wasn't knowin'
Took him down outside, tried to talk him down, but couldn't make a dent
And all through, he kept flippin' some cooooooin

I've heard that Gotham is New York below 14th Street, and Metropolis is New York above 14th Street.

I've never heard of Batwoman. Batman gets my vote.

Batwoman's been around even before the mid '60s TV show.

There's only one Batman. Well, two, counting Azrael. And Dick was a third Batman for a while. And then there are those historical Batmen that occasionally arise in the fullness of time. And of course, the alternative timeline Batmen.

So there's in fact, not one, but INFINITE Batmen. But... there's only one... in this tournament. And he bat-cruises to a 19-1 victory.
