Good matchup here. Both characters are rooted in mythology. Both are gifted their powers from another, more powerful being, both are obscenely muscle bound, both arrogant tools. Both are very chivalrous and honor-bound in defending women.

Name:ThorName:Captain Britain
AKA:Donald Blake, Siegmund, Siegfried, Son of Odin, God of ThunderAKA:Brian Braddock
Creator(s):Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack KirbyCreator(s):Chris Claremont, Herb Trimpe
Origin:AsgardOrigin:Maldon, Essex, UK
Base of Operations:Asgard, New YorkBase of Operations:London, mostly
Teams:Avengers, mostlyTeams:Excalibur, Secret Avengers
Signature Lines:"I defend those who cannot defend themselves."Teams:"'ll be your champion, now and forever. I'll be Captain Britain!"
Powers:Flight (with hammer), super strength, enhanced invulnerability, very long lived, only being able to wield the hammer Mjolinir, which can do copious damage when weilded, thrown or spun. Can summon lightning (also hammer-dependent).Powers:Superhuman strength, speed, endruance, agility, durability, refelxes, senses. Forcefields, energy beams, and flight. Very conventional but powerful package of superskills.
Weaknesses:Without the hammer, he's just another strong, invulnerable guy. Can't get around, can't fire stuff, can't control elements. Also depends on the good graces of his father for the continued presence of his powers. And his father can be fickle. Also, a lot of rival godlings resent him just for exisiting, so trouble on a galactic scale just follows him around.Weaknesses:His power flows from the magic of ancient England, and so has tended to abate when he's been abroad. Also grows weak when his confidence flags. But, you know, having to remain confident leads to arrogance which also undermines him. He may just be a bi-polar case waiting to happen.

tougher call than i thought it would be... i was never an avengers guy and did like the original Excalibur series. meanwhile, the earlier Captain Britain Omnibus sits on my shelf waiting to be read some day. I'll go with the Captain here!

I never knew Captain Britain existed. I thought Captain America was only possible because it tapped into a unique militant American cockiness. Then again, I always say that Americans learned a lot from watching Britain.

I lovedlovedLOVED that first Excalibur run-- Claremont and Alan Davis, sci-fi and supernatural mashin', mutant pathos along bizarre deadpan and sight gags.

From the power set to the Lee/Kirby origins to the Simonson years to filial-deathmatch-shit, though, Thor's just operatic. And the conflicts he's wrestled with from the beginning-- pride-versus-selflessness, romantic-love-versus-regal-responsibility, power-versus-compassion-- just resonate in a way that ol' Mr. Braddock can't hope to match. (The Union Jack, though, makes a kick-ass costume, though, don't it?)

I'm developing a real man crush on LWFS....NTTAWWT. Thor was Lee/Kirby at the apex of their powers. And Excalibur? That was after my time.

Captian Britain should be an undersized guy with bad teeth.

Aw. You.

Excalibur was, more than anything else, the first funny X-book I ever remember seeing. Also, more to the point we're discussing here, it was where Captain Britain got a little more interesting (power fluctuation, shot through with self-doubt for the first time) and got his Union Jack suit, after starting out looking like so:

Not a bad look in its own right, really.

He'll kick your ass, but he's really polite while doing it.

If that doesn't work, he'll serve you warm beer and cold baked beans until you go terrorize a country with better weather.

If that bloody Brit isn't man enough to let us know which Premier League team he roots for, then he isn't the supe for me.

I voted for Thor, although I don't like the illustration above. Thor needs to look like Jack Kirby drew him. Seeing him in all that armor is like seeing the Mets in all-black uniforms.

Simonson's run on Thor was fantastic. He completely reinvigorated that title.

Re: Crane Pool War of the Supes, Rd. 1: Thor vs. Captain Bri

i had the 4-piece set of 8 x 14 posters based on Asgardian characters, drawn by Kirby. I still have 2 of them. I've looked for the other 2 on eBay, but they're prohibitively expensive, and usually only available in the complete set.

Kirby's THOR was obviously the definitive version, and his vision of Asgard and the rainbow bridge were mind blowing to a 12-year old. But i was actually more taken by Stan Lee's scripting. To my juvenile mind, it was like reading Shakespeare, except, you know, for idiots. It made me feel like it was literature. Which gave me an appetite for actual literature.
so way to go, Stan!
