We're looking at a battle of Indies here in the Science Fiction Heroes Bracket of the DC/Indie conference.

Dredd was launched by British publisher IPC media in the seventies, which is interesting, because he's set in a post-apololyptic United States. Miracleman (initially Marvel Man) was a featured superhero for Fawcett comics before lawsuits during the consolidation era. caused him to be re-written and change hands.

Miracleman looks like a near-copyright violation of Superman.

Judge Dredd puts a lot of lawyers out of work.
Vote for Judge Dredd.

I was on an Alan Moore kick a number of years ago (on reading The Watchmen & discovering Promethea) and I looked into all his other works. Miracleman/Marvelman popped up. I read about it and went and got digital copies of Miracleman #1 to #25 (with unpublished pages). I haven't read them yet. But I'll start right now and I'll never read Judge Dredd.
MM gets my vote.

If anyone wants a copy of these they are pretty small .cpr files.

Marvelman was a character that ripped off Captain Marvel which DC claimed ripped off Superman (which was bullshit, but whatever). He was revived by Alan Moore in the 80s and continued by Neil Gaiman. Its brilliant stuff, very much in Moore's superhero deconstruction phase.

Dredd is a British icon and star of multiple series and movies. But he's just another fascist with a gun and a motorcycle.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Judge Dredd vs. Miracleman

God, I fucking hated Judge Dredd. I hated that Judge Dredd had another comic-fame moment in the wake of the ultraviolent-antihero-Punisher/Spawn thing. Hell, I tend to look warily at readers who love Judge Dredd.

Trust me, neutral voters: you want to vote Miracleman. (You also want to read the 1982 Miracleman omnibus, which as Z and Vic point out, was brought to you by young, smart Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman, and is a great superhero comic for people who love superhero comics OR find superhero comics a little trite and silly.)

Dredd was ahead 7-4 when I saw your post. I thought, fuck it, I'll change my vote, and bam, MM was suddenly up 8-4. YOUR POST seems to be swinging this thing back away from Rambo.

Miracleman. Eclipse Comics reprinted Moore's "Marvelman" books in the 1980s, and they were really good. I know nothing at all about Judge Dredd, so this choice was easy. (Actually, I haven't yet had a difficult choice. But this is still in the first round.)

Votes continue to spill out of the judge's side of the ledger and into Miracledude's column. Here's to the "Re-voting" toggle.

Does Judge Dredd ever fight Judge Judy?
I'd watch that.

Our first (and so far, only) upset so far! A number-eight seed takes a number-one by a resounding scored of 13-3.

I've got to look up more about this Miracle Dude, as he's busted the bracket wide open.
