It's a disturbing early master vs. disciple matchup, as Charles Xavier confronts perhaps his greatest pupil in the Silver Age X-Mutants Bracket of the Marvel Conference.

Name:Jean GreyName:Professor X
AKA:Jean Grey-Summers, Phoenix, Marvel Girl, lots of "Phoenix" variationsAKA:Professor Chares Xavier
Creator(s):Stan Lee, Jack KirbyCreator(s):Stan Lee, Jack Kirby
Origin:Annandale-on-Hudson, NYOrigin:New York, NY
Base of Operations:Several, particularly Salem Center, Westchester, NYBase of Operations:Salem Center, Westchester, NY
Teams:X-Men, X-Factor, Phoenix Corps, among othersTeams:X-Men, Illuminati, among others, but mostly X-Men, who bear his X.
Signature Lines:"Fools! You dare to trifle with the Phoenix?"Signature Lines:"My name is Charles Xavier. I am a mutant. And once upon a time I had a dream... of a world where all Earth's children, both mutant and baseline human, might live together in peace. This isn't it. This is today's reality."
Arch-Enemy:Emma FrostArch-Enemy:Magneto
Powers:What can't she do? Telekensis, telepathy, mind reading, mind control, mind CLEANSING, psionic attacts that can render an opponent a lifeless shell, and astral projection. That's before we get to the Phoenix-based powers, that allwo her to manipulate matter and energy, travel through space without life support, scorch things with "cosmic fire," manipulate the time contuum, and pretty much die and come back to life whenever.Powers:Genius intellect, with invention and strategic skills cascading out from that intellect. Powerful telepath and empath, reding and controling and erasing minds. Also has that astral projection and psionic combat thing going.
Weaknesses:Controllng all that power has made her a hot mess of emotional instability. She may be attractive, but she's pretty much the worst choice in girlfriends. And under emotional stress, she can make bad choices that hurt those around her, sometimes physically.Weaknesses:He's a parapalegic, relying on his wheelchair (usually) and usually staying far away from the field of combat, guiding his proteges telepathically. He's generally a moral paragon, but has a dark side that he sometimes struggles to keep at bay.

Oooh... this one isn't easy. If Jean Grey had never gone beyond being Marvel Girl, Charles Xavier would be the obvious choice. But that whole "Death of Phoenix" story was a landmark, and Jean was the pivotal character.

Still, I'm going with Professor X. More longevity, and overall a more significant character.

A hard hard choice... I'd take the loser here over the winner of most of the other matchups already posted, so one of these characters really needs to bitch about their seeding.

I'm going with Jean Grey as the ultimately better character. The professor is cool and important to the early comic, but if you'd never seen him again after he disappeared with Lilandra after Magneto's trial I think the X-Men are still as popular as they are today. If Jean Grey never becomes the Phoenix, never dies, or is never found at the bottom of the ocean everything is so much more different.

Basically, the first listed is the higher seed. Overall, Jeannie Phoenix is seeded 11th and and Principal Baldie is seeded 118th.

I don't presume to know the seeding committee's thinking, but as you noted, it's been a while since the professor has had a good season.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Jean Grey vs. Professor X

well, that's not entirely what i had in mind. I didn't seed them 1 - 128. I seeded them 1-8 within each thematic bracket and then paired off the brackets within each conference. There was some ranking of brackets, but it was not rigid. It was more about spreading out the big hitters and grouping the characters thematically for the 1st round, before they started battling other brackets. Even the initial 1-8 seedings were not rigid; i moved some folks up and down in order to get more interesting matchups.

I think Jean Grey v Prof X is a good 1v8 1st round matchup, with student vs mentor. Jean was little more than a sidekick during the silver age; it wasn't till her run as Phoenix (and then Dark Phoenix) where she became an important player in the Marvel Universe, so she has no beef about seeding either way. And the Prof was never a particularly interesting character in the books; he was just the grown up in the room. It's only because Captain Picard played him in the films that he's taken on more importance.

And Edgy, this is the "Silver Age X-Mutants" bracket, not the "Bronze Age" bracket, as you stated in the opening post.
So please correct.

Thank you.

Edgy failed to note "gravity-defying breasts" among her superpowers.

They look pretty hard packed to me, not gravity defying. Just saying.

Pupil takes the master, 9-5, in this low-turnout snorefest.
