Two deadly S.H.I.E.L.D. assets with bitter backstories are a bad-ass matchup, I tell you what. Neither is quite super-powered, but both are more than human.

That's what it means to be the man on the wall. To be the invisible monster who keeps the other monsters at bay. "Signature Lines:"I am Elektra Natchios. Not even the stars are safe in the sky."

Powers:Nick has halted aging from the infinity formula. Apart from that, he's tough as nails, a superior marksman, skilled with many weapons and fighting techniques, and a legendary tactician.Powers:Elektra's a top-flight assassin, who pretty much owns every martial art there is, particularly ninjutsu. She's especially adept with her trademark twin sai, but is expert in all types of weaponry. She's in peak physical shape and flexibility and has a cold soul that makes combat pretty much the sea she swims in. Her studies have also introduced her to low-level mind control and telepathy.
Weaknesses:He's human and made of human stuff. The infinity formula will stop aging, but not bleeding. And he's pretty much addicited to the stuff. For a while it was understood that he was taking annual injections, but it appears he expended the last dose, and so may eventually succumb to time, as the rest of us do.Weaknesses:She's human, made o' flesh, and has indeed died once or twice. She's also reguarly warring between her better and worser angels. You think being created by Frank Miller is a picnic? She's here to tell you it's not.

Elektra is definitely sexier (not really going out on a limb too much on that one) but Nick Fury is more essential to the Marvel Universe. I don't really know his publication history; I'll have to look it up. I know he appeared in the Hate Monger story in Fantastic Four 21, but I don't know if he had already been in any of his Howling Commandos stories yet at that point.

In present day Marvel comics, Fury now looks like Samuel Jackson. I had to look this up: apparently Fury had a one-eyed black child as a result of some secret affair, and he has now stepped aside for Nick Fury Jr., a blatant move to get the comics to look like the movies.

Nick Fury was the tough talking cigar-chomping hero of a war comic, later re-conceived as a superspy in a MAN FROM UNCLE/James Bond style. I never had much interest in Fury and his howling commandos, but Jim Steranko's hip pop-art vision of the character made me take notice. After reading the Dr. Strange story in each issue of Strange Tales, i would then flip to the Fury story just to look at Steranko's art and composition. He was doing stuff i had never seen before. And when Fury spun off into his own series, STeranko's work revolutionized comic book art, and his covers became iconic images that i have framed for the walls of my study.

That being said, i never really cared much about the character himself, and when Steranko wasn't drawing him, he had no appeal for me at all. I like the Samuel L. Jackson movie version better, but not enough.

Elektra? She's the hottest, baddest chick on the planet, and her run in Miller's DD was as impactful as Steranko's Fury, in its own way.

Bite me, Nick. I'm going with the brunette in red, with the blades in her hands (sai... i mean, sigh)

Fury probably read true-crime as childhood bedtime stories. He brushes his teeth with sand and loofahs with sandpaper. He likes his coffee with sugar and gravel and ash particulate. He's gritty, is what I'm getting at.

But Elektra's gritty, too. And, also, so, so... smooth. (Also, she's pretty composed.)

(Why more comix-and-sexy-costume-lovin' ladies don't do the Elektra bit for Halloween, I don't know... and I perpetually regret.)

Funnily enough, I have dressed as Fury for Halloween, at age 10 or 11. (Just as well that I didn't go the other way; my pre-adolescent butt probably couldn't have pulled off red leather straps.)

Nick Fury first appeared in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1, May 1963.

His appearance in the Fantastic Four was in December 1963. It may have been his first "modern-day" appearance, since the Howling Commando stories took place during World War II.

Nick Fury, Agent of Shield, starts in Strange Tales #135 (Steranko comes aboard in issue #151, pencilling Kirby's layouts)

Marvel Wikia says that Strange Tales #135 is Fury's next appearance after Fantastic Four #21, and that the FF issue is, as I guessed, Fury's first "modern" appearance.

yes, but ST 135 is the 1st appearance of SHIELD, so before that he was still just a soldier, not "Nick Fury of SHIELD".

Elektra goes down like the spinoff she is.
