That charitable charity thing

Chad Ochoseis
Dec 01 2014 06:42 PM

It's that time again. I'll volunteer to organize it. You know the drill - post the charity of your choice, and when the thread closes, I'll randomly assign your charity to a fellow Cranepooler.

I'll post my own charity choice when I have a few minutes this week.

I'll do the charity assignments on December 16.

Thanks, and have a great holiday season, all!

As I've done in the past, I will choose The Tug McGraw Foundation as my charity. This year I'm choosing it specifically in honor of cooby's sister's battle against brain cancer.

In...I also have a balance due for ALS research in Bucket's sister's name for me chickening out on a challenge video.

FWIW, it would have needed production values that I didn't have access to, or be able to get to access (to say nothing about my feelings on what the concept of the videos was representing).

Also, oddly enough, it didn't dawn on me until after I sent the first part of the 100 bucks that I realized a connection between the Buckets and whom challenged me.

Re: That charitable charity thing

Happy to participate. My charities are both related to Ferguson, MO where the current violence has lead to frequent school closings. The Ferguson Municipal Public Library has remained open throughout, and become a community gathering place especially for children who can't go to school. Many poor children rely on school lunch, and with the schools closed the St. Louis Area Food Bank has stepped into the breach. The person assigned to my charities may chose to donate to one of these organizations or divide their donation between them. Either way, your generosity will make a difference to a troubled community.

Ele's Place is a wonderful organization I became aware of through work. It's a healing center for grieving children and teens. Three branch locations support families throughout the Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing areas and beyond. Each week, peer support group programs help hundreds of children, ages 3-18, learn how to cope and begin to heal after the death of a parent, sibling or other close family member or friend.

Thank you for supporting these wonderful people.

My brother just broke the news to me this morning that his unborn son, due in April, will have a rare heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which will require him to have multiple heart surgeries in his first 2-3 years of life and will present him with a possible life time of health concerns.

He and my sister in law are distraught. This is their first child and the prospect of being a new parent is stressful enough, even under the best of circumstances.

So, having said that, my charity is Little Hearts, Inc.

Judd Apatow hosts a recurring show at this small LA club where he just sits on stage and bullshits with his entertainment friends about stuff. It's great. I went once last month and his guests were Garry Shandling, Pete Holmes, Adam Sandler, David Spade, and Ryan Adams as a musical guest. That night was a fundraiser to fight Epidermolysis Bullosa, "a rare and debilitating genetic disorder which causes the skin to tear and blister at a slight touch and requires daily bandaging of the wounds." I'd never heard of it before, but it's just terrible.

I learned after, that Eddie Vedder recently did a show to raise awareness and funds, as apparently he and his wife are intimately involved with the EB Research org. It's an all-volunteer organization, a non-profit in the truest sense.

My group is God's Love We Deliver.

Our community has grown and evolved over the years and now includes an incredibly diverse group of clients, volunteers, staff, donors and other supporters. Our volunteers, donors and staff all work together to achieve one critical goal: ensuring that our most vulnerable friends and neighbors have access to nutritious meals at a time in their lives when they need them most.

The God’s Love story has always been one of caring and compassion, from the day one woman delivered a single meal to a man dying from AIDS to today, when a cast of literally thousands of people work in concert with each other to prepare and deliver meals to our clients living will all types of life altering diseases. While our community has grown considerably over the years, one thing has always remained the same, and that is our belief that no person should ever suffer the dual crisis of hunger and serious illness. Together, we do great things!

Re: That charitable charity thing

Well, anyway...

I was originally going to do something very strange here. As you may remember from a thread that was posted here, my dad passed away about seven months ago. Dad and I had a fairly complicated relationship. From early adolescence on through the last few years of his life, I played Meathead to his Archie. So we loved each other and respected each other, but spent a good bit of our lives at each other's throats. And we agreed on damned near nothing.

Case in point. Dad was a frontrunner, a bit of a loudmouth, and a fan of the DH rule. And he'd leave a one-run ballgame in the top of the eighth to beat traffic. So you can guess which New York baseball team he rooted for.

And, I figured, what better way to honor my dad's memory than to ask some lucky Mets fan to bury the hatchet for charitable purposes and send a few dollars to a Yankees charity. And I searched. But I couldn't find a portal for a Yankee charity donation. And, yeah, I know. There's always Turn Two Foundation. No. No way. Not even for Dad.

So, sorry, Dad. No Yankee charity for you. Instead, my parents' preferred charity had always been St. Jude Children's Hospital. They're a fine charity. And I could have picked a much worse one.

And, thanks.

Assignments coming soon.

The Need

With 1.7 million cancer cases a year in the United States, there are more than 3 million kids affected by a parent’s cancer and Camp Kesem recognizes and embraces this often-overlooked population of children. Because they don’t appear sick, their needs are often over looked and they suffer quietly, leading to academic, social, emotional, and developmental problems.

This is a home run by Dominican Sisters. Here's a funny story.

When I was a very young, very green reporter I was assigned a story about a former nun who was being rebuffed in her attempt to adopt two foster children and there were some issues that made it newsworthy. I was told there would be Dominican sisters protesting.

So I pull up in front of the house and saw a group of very white, rather elderly nuns sitting in lawn chairs in a circle on the lawn. I'm there for a while and talking to the very nice nuns. Finally, I said to one of the organizers, "Where are the Hispanic people, and why are they protesting?"

Hispanics?

"Yeah, I was told there would be sisters from the Dominican Republic protesting."

Luckily, Sister Sue though this was very funny and kindly spent some time educating the young, Lutheran reporter about Dominican Sisters.

As a critical partner in the mission of the DAV Charitable Service Trust, you'll help all of our veterans live lives of respect and dignity, though many face such tragic issues as amputations, brain wounds, PTSD, loss of vision and hearing, and more.

Responding to lifelong needs among veterans and their families, the Trust funds programs and services that consider the whole person, aiding veterans with mental, emotional, physical, therapeutic and econo mic needs.

Sorry to be late to the party. I be busy.

Dear Edgy,

Thank you for your gift of $40.00 to The V Foundation.

Your donation is so important to our work – funding innovative research aimed at eliminating cancer. This research helps countless men, women, and children who are facing cancer today by funding novel, effective treatments. And it allows us to uncover strategies to prevent and cure cancer, to stop the suffering that cancer inflicts. Your generous support makes this possible.

The V Foundation is an excellent steward of your money. We have received a top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, indicating that we are in the top tier of charities. The V Foundation awards 100 percent of direct cash donations to cancer research and related programs. Due to generous donors, the Foundation has an endowment that covers administrative expenses.

Our work is urgent and important. Much progress has been made through the research we have funded, and much remains to be accomplished. Our stellar scientific advisors ensure that we fund the best research conducted by the best physicians and scientists. We are strategic, and we are driven. Your support is invaluable to making the progress of our time, and we are deeply grateful to you!

Jim Valvano challenged us by saying “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up.”® That challenge is more alive now than ever before. With your help, we will find answers that save lives.

For more information on how you can help in the fight against cancer, please call us toll-free at 1-800-4-JimmyV, or visit our website at www.jimmyv.org. Again, thank you for your support.

Thank you for your generous gift, which will support grieving children and their families. A formal thank you letter which can serve as a receipt for tax purposes will be sent soon. Your support helps children cope with the death or life-threatening illness of a parent, sibling or other loved one. Before coming to Ele’s Place, these children are devastated by their loss and often keep their feelings inside, not wanting to burden their grieving family or share with friends who don’t understand if they haven’t had a similar loss. Often, they feel very alone until they come to Ele’s Place, where hundreds of children meet each week with new friends their age who really understand how they feel. In addition, grieving children also connect with each other in their schools through our Ele’s Group school-based program. You are making it possible for Ele’s Place to help all these children find hope and begin to heal. Again, on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and families at Ele’s Place, thank you for caring enough to make a generous gift.

Re: That charitable charity thing

First to the party, last to leave. You can't take me anywhere.

Dear Mitchell,

Thank you for generously supporting the American Diabetes Association. Your gift makes a difference in our fight to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. We count on you to help us help the more than 29 million Americans affected by diabetes and another 86 million at risk for developing diabetes.

Thanks to everyone for joining in, and extra thanks to sharpie for donating to my chosen charity. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2015.

A friend of mine is a regular volunteer there, or at least was until they made their temporary move out to Bed-Stuy. It's a fine organization.

Thank you Chad :) ADA will probably send you mail weekly for the next three years, and I apologize, but I do thank you for your donation.

Re: That charitable charity thing

I'd like to designate Prajwala as my beneficiary. Prajwala is an agency in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, dedicated to the fight against sex slavery and human trafficking in their part of the world. Prajwala’s work involves prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration, as well as advocacy and research to promote new policies on trafficking in India.

Due disclosure: I figure it's mixed interest to designate my own agency, but my agency does partner with Prajwala, offering them logistical and financial support.

Sex slavery and human trafficking took a hit this morning. Thanks to all for organizing this year after year.
