Is this a matchup or a Mensa meeting? Two of our tournament's biggest brains meet in Round One, coming right out of the Marvel Conference's Superheroes 2 Bracket.

He then invented a helmet that allowed him to communicate with ants. How She Came to Be:Because he's a genius, he was able to build a rocket to take himself and his friends into outer space. Because he's not such a genius, he failed to protect this rocket from cosmic rays, and when his rocket was bombarded by these rays, he and his friends were all changed at the cellular level.

Song I Think Of:"Ants Marching"Song I Think Of:"Bend Me, Shape Me"
Powers:Can grow from a tiny microscopic dude to a really big dude, depending on how he applies his technology. Up to 100 feet, I think. Somehow, someway maintains human strenth at tiny size. Has a helmet that allows him to telepathically/cybernetically communicate with ants and sort of command their asses.Powers:Reed is another damn genius. He's been known to read Stephen Hawking and correct him in the margins. His mutation gives him superhuman elasticity, malleability, shapey-shiftiness, and endurance. This rubberinees gives him near-immunity to most blunt, sharp, or electrical attacts. His body can absorb and contain explosions and slingshot projectiles back from whence they came. Also can mimic the features of others. I don't know why he should have this extra gift, but he's virtually immune to psychic powers.
Weaknesses:He's a bug. Bugs are vulnerable. And he doesn't have super-speed, so his power works best one-on-one. In a crowd, he's toast.Weaknesses:A man can only stretch himself so far. More importantly, he's got his blind spots. I mean, if he's a genius, how did he expose his friends to this random dose of radiation? And how come he can't counter the effects even if he wanted to. He's arrogant. He smokes a pipe like an arrogant hipster. He's got a big head like Greg Brady. His name should be "Hipster Greg Brady."

I'll take Ant-Man based on growth potential. He's a grower, not a shower, is what you're saying. I can respect that.

I'll take Pym. Like Leonardo, I find Mr. Fantastic a little two straight-laced.

Reed Richards is one of the most important figures in the Marvel Universe. Hank Pym is a tiny guy who talks to ants.

I find that empty and yet strangely compelling, so I switched my vote.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Ant-Man vs. Mr. Fantastic

Here's one of the coolest things Reed has ever done, from Fantastic Four #2.

After defeating winning a battle against shape-shifting aliens, he was stuck with some leftover Skrulls. Rather than imprison them, he hypnotized them into thinking they were cows. How ingenious is that??? I think that we should do the same thing with the terrorists at Guantanamo. We can't set them free, and we don't want to continue holding them. Why not hypnotize them into thinking that they're cows? They can spend the rest of their natural lives grazing in a pasture somewhere.

Also... I love this line from Stan Lee: "We hate being Skrulls! We'd rather be anything else!" One of my all-time favorites.

I'm having trouble seeing the upside of "He turns terrified surrendering aliens into cows."

Well... they're happy cows.

Okay, I admit that it may not be the most compassionate thing he could have done, but I love how uncharacteristically nutty it was for Reed to do. Of course, this was only the second comic in which Reed appeared, so his personality hadn't really been established yet.

Those cow-Skrulls would appear again in the future. They played a part (I don't remember the details) in the epic Kree-Skrull war, and many years after that, they figured in a Fantastic Four annual in which a friend of the Torch's ended up in a strange town that had been affected by years of inadvertently drinking Skrull milk.

Ant-Man is different, but not particularly good.

Mr. Fantastic is a Plastic Man ripoff, but better.

In the battle of mad geniuses, this one goes to the Reed section.

I'm telling you: NEVER bet on a guy with antennae on his helmet/head.
