Two animal-themed costumed crusaders meet up in the DC/Indie Conference's Bronze/Modern-Age Superhero Bracket. Yeah, they got a lot in common..

Name:Black CanaryName:Animal Man
AKA:Dianah Laurel Lance (also Dinah Drake, her mother)AKA:Bernhard "Buddy" Baker
Creator(s):Robaert Kanigher, Carmine InfantinoCreator(s):Dave Wood, Carmine Infantino
Place of Birth:Gotham City, NJ (Lance); Unknown (Drake)Place of Birth:Dunno
How He Came to Be:Drake was an unpowered superhero, going undercover to root out the criminal underground. Her daughter, however, discovered she had a metagene, which allowed her to produce an incapacitating scream. How She Came to Be:Buddy gained his powers when he encountered a spaceship which blew up, infusing him with radiation, which turned out to be beneficial. This happened to me once.
Base of Operations:Gotham City, NJBase of Operations:Last in Montana; Formerly Pownal, Vermont, and San Diego, California
Teams:Justice Society of America, Justice League,Birds of Prey, Justice League Team 7Teams:Justice League, Forgotten Heroes
Signature Lines:"Get this evil bastard off of our planet. "Signature Lines:"Did you see that?! I totally saved that cow! "
Arch-Enemy:White CanaryArch-Enemy:Antagon
Sidekick(s):None, except "Sin" on the [i}Arrow TV show, but that's non-canonicalSidekick(s):Beast Boy and Animal Girl, at times, sorta. But only sorta.
Paramour(s):Oliver Queen/Green ArrowParamourEllen Frazier Baker
Has Been Played By:Danulta Wesley, Caity Lotz, Katie Cassidy, Rachel Skarsten, Lori Loughlin, Alaina Huffman, Alex KingstonOnce Played By:No one. Weird Al once voiced him, though
Could Have Been Played By:Angie DickinsonCould Have Been Played By:Dennis Leary
Song I Think Of:"Canary in a Coal Mine"Song I Think Of:"I'm an Animal"
Powers:Orignal Canary had good hand-to-hand skills, nice detection ability with a flair for undercover work. Her daughter has an untraasonic scream that incapacitates and breaks a lot o' glass, peak-level martial arts and physical prowess, and is good with a bike. Did I say good? She's exceptional.Powers:Can gain the powers of any animal that exists or has existed. That's some extensive skill set that I don't want to list here.
Weaknesses:She's moral and bleeds. No super speed or strength. And while she protects her torso in leather, she recklessly likes to show a llittle leg. Her boots also tend to be heeled, which may have the power of helping to incapacitate the young and horny, but also can be a disadvantage in combat.Weaknesses:He's happy-go-lucky, but some of the other heroes think of him as a goofball. His concern for animals is comparable to --- some might say more than -- his concern for humanity --- and this rubs some the wrong way.

My vote is for Animal Man. I only know him from Grant Morrison's run, but I enjoyed it. If I remember right, for Animal Man to get the powers of a particular animal, one of that species needs to be somewhere nearby. So I don't think it would be possible for him to get the powers of a pterodactyl, (although in a comic book universe it's possible that he could encounter a pterodactyl) but if, for example, he was at the zoo and saw an ostrich, he would be able to stick his head in the sand. Or something like that.

My vote goes to someone who wants to save our planet, not just one cow. Saving the planet one cow at a time might take too long in an emergency.

I'd like to introduce the Black Canary to the White Salami.

Plus, she's a screamer. Yeah.

i loved Morrison's run on animal man. But if you think i'm voting against the hot chick in leather boots and fishnets, you're out of your freakin' mind. She and Zatanna should open a boutique.

I watch Arrow, and enjoy it. Though it's Sara Lance, not Laurel, that's Black Canary. Although I'm pretty sure they never call her that (though they do in a crossover episode on The Flash) They tie her into Oliver's backstory, so she's trained by the League Of Assassins/Shadows and is a paramour of Talia al Ghul.

So there's my vote.

She's called Canary, and that's close enough, since Oliver is called Arrow. Clearly the colors in their nicknames are left to inference.

Based on the way they're laying it out, Laurel will become the Black Canary in about two weeks.

next week is the mid season 'finale', so maybe.

yeah, they just call her Canary but I don't think they've ever used that on Arrow. And she doesn't have a super-sonic scream, though the show in general doesn't have any 'supernatural' abilities.

It's very like Batman in that regard.

I beggeth to differeth.

[list]Laurel: What was that word you said before?
Sara: Ta-er al-Sahfer.
Laurel: What does that mean?
Sara: It means "The Canary".
Laurel: If you're so far gone and so irredeemable... then why would they know you by such a beautiful name?[/list:u]

And she doesn't have a super-sonic scream,

No, but she uses an electronic device to project its equivalent.

...though the show in general doesn't have any 'supernatural' abilities.

I think you're behind in your viewing. The town was crawling with supernatural zombies at the end of the season. Plus, they're crossing with Flash and that's one big goofy fantasy zone.

Neil Adams' Black Canary was hands down the sexiest looking woman in comics.

I stand corrected, I forgot about that ta-er al-sahfer bit. Maybe I'm just not noticing them calling her Canary.

Those were simply drug-induced zombies. It's a fine line, and clearly they had the Flash in an episode (or two?) but you're not seeing the 'this guy can turn is body into metal' or 'this guy's on fire!' metahumans as much as the super-trained assassin type villains.

Super-strength, super-invulnerable, drug-induced zombies with musculature the density of concrete. This happens all the time in your corner of the natural world?

I think TV is totally blurring our distinctions of natural and supernatural. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to feed the molemen.
