His top comp on Baseball Reference is Ryan Thompson.

If that's official, I like it. Mayberry career vs LHP: .269/.324/.533 with 30 HR in 490 AB.

And hey, Ryan Thompson wouldn't have made a terrible fifth OF (with center-ing capability)/1B.

It's official, then? Somewhat unique among erstwhile Phils, he always gave me that guy-I-wouldn't-mind-seeing-in-our-colors feeling. (Rollins, too.)

Not great news for Eric Campbell.

Hits den Dekker harder, I think.

den Dekker's a lefty (Though I prefer Nieuwenhuis). One of them probably still mans the bench with Mayberry.

Depending how you look at it, Flores/Tejada/Murphy up the middle and Recker as the C backup, you've got one more spot that you need to be able to backup 3B, so Campbell might still be okay.

Sure, likely Nieuwenhuis, based on options and performance.

What I'm saying.

Re: Throneberry, Strawberry, Mayberry

JMJ plays a decent defensive OF too, IIRC, so could fill in at any of the three positions -- or am I, like Andy Pettitte, misremembering here?

Re: Throneberry, Strawberry, Mayberry

I think "fill-in" is the key phrase, there.

He's not embarrassing in the outfield, but he's no asset.

Re: Throneberry, Strawberry, Mayberry

Well yeah, I don't expect to start on a regular basis anywhere.
I just meant that I have a vague opinion that he brings good defensive traits to the party and that he has played a decent amount of CF over the years, although it's possible that I may just be conflating him and Dom Brown* to the point where I'm mixing up which skills go with what guy.

Re: Throneberry, Strawberry, Mayberry

Not a bad pickup. He should definitely play against lefties.

Nieuwenhuis and den Dekker appear to be competing for one spot. I would hope, based on how he hit in the second half, that Nieuwenhuis has the leg up.

Campbell, I think, is on the outside looking in.

Chico Escuela would approve.
