I think its old, because it has the old skyline logo that doesn't include the CitiCorp building. (Or are my eyes not keen enough to see it?)

The Mets have a very long running tradition of sending out Met themed holiday cards to its staff, season ticket holders and others. The tradition dates back to the team's original owners and has continued, unbroken to this very day even though the team's in the poorhouse and you would think can't afford anything. The holiday card at the top of this thread is from (December) 1977. [fimg=544]http://www.kcmets.com/CPF/mrmetxmas.jpg[/fimg] This one's from Winter 2006-07.

That is the message that was printed in the holiday card that went out in December 1999. And, yes, the Mets misspelled millennium. Then again, they got one run out of a grand slam.

Perhaps the menorah should slope downward from the center like the NYC skyline.

I first read a variation on this argument at the end of the 1970s. "It's not really the end of the 1970s," it was said in so many words. "That won't be until December 31, 1980. And, really, this decade should be called the '80s, and the one that begins on January 1, 1981 should be called the '90s." Nobody bought it in December 1979. Few bought the larger albeit arguable version in December 1999. Brooklyn is technically part of Long Island, so the Islanders aren't really leaving Long Island. Except they are. And rolling the odometer from 2000 to 2001 floated a fraction of the boats that 1999 to 2000 did. Sometimes reasonably informed perception carries the day.
|
Benjamin Grimm Dec 17 2014 08:17 AM Re: Mets holiday cards |
1979 was certainly the end of the 1970s. It wasn't, however, the end of the 198th decade. That ended at the end of 1980. We just don't count decades the way we do centuries. Anyone who says that 1980 was still the 1970s is just plain wrong.
|
Ceetar Dec 17 2014 08:17 AM Re: Mets holiday cards |
actually, it WAS the end of the 70s, just not the end of the decade. Of course, When someone gives you a 'decades' trivia question they're usually doing 70-79, not 71-80. It's just a counting error of course, and one that doesn't really matter much. I guess because the ability to count to 2000 doesn't seem that tough to just gloss over. Of course, we're measuring years from a fictional event so...

Spellcheck existed at least as early as 1991, when the magazine I worked for installed Macs and it was all "guess what this thing can do!"

The menorah is disproportionately large. A Festivus Pole would be fun, and maybe work in a little Kwanzaa somehow?

That sounds very right. The place where I worked had a former employee who had gone on to temp for the Mets and she sent us the card. It hung in the reception area well after the alleged millennium kicked in. I judged it up for grabs and I grabbed it.

G-Fafif Dec 17 2014 12:59 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |

Has it been established the Mets still send actual cards? I thought the e-cards took their place to be green or save green. I'm guessing if there's a mailing or e-mailing list, the person responsible for keeping it up to date is the person who has legal action pending against them.
|
batmagadanleadoff Dec 17 2014 01:03 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |

I assume they still do, but I don't know for sure. Any season ticket or plan holders here? Did y'all get any holiday cards from the Mets this month? (Or maybe the Mets aren't broke enough to have ended their card tradition, but too broke to send partial plan holders a holiday card, in which case, you partial plan holders wouldn't necessarily know anymore).

I do have a pending order for tickets. Which reminds me, they're a freaking christmas present, where are they?! I don't know if it comes with a card, I declined the 'holiday box'

I seem to remember last year there being a bit of kvetching that the holiday tradition had been breached...though it's a reasonably kvetchworthy breach if so.

I'll re-work that any way you see fit. I've already worked on it a bit, added stockings and added a version with a white backdrop (I'll post that when complete). Made a separate Christmas one that I hope to make a snowGif. The menorah is big, but due to an issue in balance and the fact that other things in there cant be obscured, I basically had only two choices. The first version had the menorah under METS, small (I think I saved a copy, and Ill post it just to see). But too small, I thought, so I looked to display it bigger somehow. I thought it too small in relation to the tree- I'd like the exposure to be equal. But to get the menorah to be seen around the tree, I had to make it big like that (and exceed past the border, which I did not want to do in this case-but had to) but it's thinness keeps it balanced. I'm against adding Festivus or Kwanzaa symbols or poles or whatever, but if that's what you guys want, I'll get it in there. That's the uncluttered version Bats. Ha. Of course I will unclutter it if that is desired. I tried getting it some parts of the tree come forward. This was posted on the cardBlogThing last night (no CPF on this). [fimg=300]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RWax6sCALi4/VJE8JN0VWKI/AAAAAAAAWPM/9PbzIwbBLIk/s576/2014mfcHappyHolidays-z15.png[/fimg] Picasa did one of those auto things--not sure why or how this happens, but they take a few of your pics and make a .gif from them. It ends up in my Picasa album. They did this: [fimg=300]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-za0jMKkhqv8/VJE9raYoWLI/AAAAAAAAWPY/fIjckFfjnDY/s576/2014Xmas-001-z15-MOTION.gif[/fimg] Would be pretty kool if I didn't have the site logo and name on the outside.

Zvon Dec 17 2014 04:56 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |
This is an earlier version with the small menorah. Actually, it looks good but my thinking was that there might be a problem with it being too small. The menorah being in the foreground does give it a balance. I don't like the bells there but I wanted them in there somewhere. This was done before I thought to add the CPF thing. That NY wouldn't be in there. I wouldn't go w/that gray background either. I'd try a lighter one w/o the big menorah up there.

batmagadanleadoff Dec 17 2014 09:42 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |

Don't listen to me. But if you did, and you hadda work with the Mets skyline logo, I'd ditch the xmas tree and menorah altogether. It's too busy with those elements and in the end, you can't see either one too clearly. I'd swap out the baseball seams for some holiday wreath. And maybe add some falling snow. Or frost. Or ice on the buildings. I dunno.

Bastards. First Tidewater. Then WFAN. And now this. Bah!
|
Zvon Dec 18 2014 12:48 AM Re: Mets holiday cards |
|||||
The addition of a wreath is a great idea. Seams can go or stay, but I think a wreath around the entire border might look excellent. I did do a version with the skyline partially in it (it could be seen thru the tree but I didn't think it was working- but if it has to be in there, I'll find a way. Sure, the menorah & tree can go) Like I said, I'll scrap that whole design if that's not agreeable. It's up to you guys. I'll put anything in it you want. And there's certainly plenty of time to figure this out. I'm not sure if you want to print em or what but we got a late start and as suggested, we can aim for 2015 on this. By then maybe we'll be able to add a 'lil pennant to it (dare I say a WS trophy!!) :)

Benjamin Grimm Dec 18 2014 03:10 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |
I tried something different… I wanted to try to make it look like someone had painted the Mets logo on a snowball. I don't think it quite worked.
|
Zvon Dec 18 2014 08:29 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |

That's actually a great start Edge. If you are working in layers, throw a drop shadow on the layer with all the gold in it. That'll make it pop right up.
That looks like a snowball to me. But...green!!??AAAAAAHHHHHH!
|
Edgy MD Dec 18 2014 09:27 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |
What color should the drop-shadow be?
|
Zvon Dec 18 2014 09:29 PM Re: Mets holiday cards |
|
Something dark, I would think. But Id test light as well. Whichever makes it stand out best. edit: btw, if you can do this with your program, see if you can make the drop shadow a little blurry through feathering (hopefully there's a feather measurement deal when you get a box open for the drop shadow)
