Oy, these days, if it's coke, that's good news.

He can probably afford coke unlike a lot of minor leaguers.

Were we aware of the first offense?

Re: Mazzillin'

I think for 'drugs of abuse' (read: recreational rather than performance enhancing) the initial slip-up is kept quiet so the player can 'seek help for his problem' without the surrounding noise.

Re: Mazzillin'

What a terrible time for him. With Dilson already having leapfrogged him at the end of last season, and a handful of real infield prospects coming up behind him.

Stop going to raves, LJ!

Can't find anything but feel like I remember hearing about the initial suspension.

Re: Mazzillin'

He got nearly 600 PAs this year (in essentially April-Aug leagues) and over 300 in his short-season stint in '13 so he certainly didn't miss any time.
It's possible that word leaked out about a possible positive test before this one but even then there wouldn't have been any suspension time involved because this doesn't appear to involve PEDs

Re: Mazzillin'

Being a Mazzilli keeps one high all the time, so that's strike one, according to the CBA.

Seems a little, and unnecessarily, harsh.
The elder Mazzilli had this to say, via the Mets:

Just like any other parent out there we are disappointed and hurt when our children make bad decisions. However, we are proud of our son for seeking professional help on his own. The only thing now that we can do as a family is love him, support him, and have faith as we’ve always done.”[/indent]

Given his past history, I'm surprised his father didn't point the finger at him.

There's a lot of harsh going around.

I don't think we know the substance of Mazzilli's grand jury testimony. He wasn't called to testify at the trial.

It was an allusion to the dad pointing out the obstruction call to the ump in a Mets/ MFY game. That was when the dad's coat got officially turned.

From December 19, 2005:

Close-fit clothes and wavy hair
And basket catches filled with flair
Great expectations everywhere
I looked at Mazz that way.

But now he's just a Yankee bum
One of George's favorite sons
I oft' forget the good he's done
The years get in the way.

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
From Bronx and Queens and still somehow
The young Mazzilli I recall
Wasn't what I thought at all.

Thrills and chills and joy so real
That Seattle homer made me feel
Those years before he snitched on Zeile
I looked at Mazz that way.

But now he's just a friend of Joe
Player loyalties come and go
Although we care, they don't, you know
They're in it for the pay.

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
A Met, a Yank, and still somehow
Those wide-eyed days that I recall
I really didn't know Mazz at all.

Years of cheers and feeling proud
To say "Let's Go Mets" really loud
Dreams and screams from within the crowd
I watched the Mets that way

I'm still a fan, that'll never change
They're still my Mets though their names are strange
With innocence lost, perspective's gained
I see them a new way

I've looked at Mazz from both sides now
From Bronx and Queens and still somehow
The young Mazzilli I recall
Wasn't what I thought at all.

Baby Mazz returns to St. Lucie, going 2-4 with a two-run homer in his first game back.

He might well be knocking on the big league door by now without that suspension.
