Tabbed as the Nationals new Life Skills Coordinator is former Met and St. Lucie High's own Rico Ankiel. I need me some life skills. Rick always seemed like a computer-generated face, to me.

"Life Skills Coordinator"? "Rick is going to be a confidant to our players," assistant general manager Doug Harris said. "With Rick's background, he has dealt with a lot in his personal life. He had a very unique experience in his professional life. He has the ability to help our kids during difficult times based on his experience and background. It's something we wanted to dabble into. "I can't think of another guy that has gone through what he has gone through as a pitcher and then came back to be a Major League position player and dealt with the highs and lows that came with that." I'm curious to see if any other MLB teams have one. I assume it's about teaching adult children how to at least pretend to be a grown-up. Here's how Long Beach State describes the job. Welcome to the Life Skills program at Long Beach State! WHY HAVE LIFE SKILLS? The purpose of the Life Skills program is to prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life during and after college athletics and guide them toward their graduation day. CHAMPS/Life Skills was developed for student-athletes to enhance the qualities and skills necessary for their high level of achievement in athletics and academics, applying these skills to "life" situations. The Life Skills program was developed to help student athletes not only make the transition from college to professional life in the work world, but also to make meaningful contributions to their communities by encouraging the development of character, integrity, and leadership skills. Below are some of the programs the Life Skills Coordinator facilitates. Glendon Rusch will be coaching Padre minor leaguers in 2015. And Charlie O'Brien will be overstating his impact on the game in a new book. During fifteen seasons in the major leagues, Charlie O’Brien was battery-mate to thirteen pitchers who won the Cy Young Award, presented each year by the Baseball Writers Association of America. As baseball book maven Ron Kaplan notes, O'Brien wasn't necessarily the catcher for these pitchers when they won the CYA, and the total includes a guy he caught in Spring Training but never in a game (Pete Vukovich three years before Charlie was in the bigs). I recall C.O'B. as fairly taciturn and personality-free, but maybe he was saving it all for his memoir.

I don't pretend to have any knowledge of photo forensics, but details of the ball and Hillman's outline seem inked in. Hillman's profile seems oddly distinct, like his face was cropped in there. His eyebrow is inked in, and he seems to be lit by natural light, while Banks is in artificial light. Am I crazy or do you see what I'm seeing? And the author thoughtfully replies. I see your point, but I assume that's just the results of an old photo scanned in and toned multiple times -- first for a book on Steve Bilko and the 1956 L.A. Angels (where Hillman pitched almost the entire season in the PCL) and then whatever the guys have to do running our photos through processing at Press. In my opinion, Photoshop and another similar deal they also use at Press, almost gives a water colors type appearance to a lot of the color photos. I'd be shocked if Hillman and Banks weren't actually sitting there together when a camera clicked, because Hillman was talking about how photogs would get them sitting around in that era -- newspapers' glory years, unfortunately :). The slug on the pic sent from "Bilko" author Gaylon White is 42_Hillman Dave 4608-68HTb_w Banks_AP ... so, I'd say it was an Associated Press shot. So, could the photo simply be too many generations removed from the negative?
