Is there really one definitive way to spell it? I thought there were a number of ways (I wasn't trying to make a joke).

Re: Happy Chanukah!

There are multiple spellings. I was making a joke, the
top of my A&P flyer spelled it the way I did.

No. When you transliterate from Hebrew, there are many variations.

Re: Happy Chanukah!

I have a silly question..I think. If I was doing a graphic with a menorah how many candle holders does it have? I looked at some clip art and they have ones with seven and ones with nine. Are there variations with that too and what is the significance?

Re: Happy Chanukah!

Not a silly question at all.

You'd want nine candles - one shamash (set apart from the others) plus eight candles to signify the eight nights that the oil burned. The shamash can either be to one side of the others or it can be in the middle and taller than the others.

In the picture at the top of this thread, the candle on the left is clearly the shamash.

Thank you TMF.
So the one with 7 is just a mistake (there were more than one of this type on Google search)? I'm glad I didn't use that one.

Re: Happy Chanukah!

I've seen the ones with seven but I'm not sure what they are used for.

Re: Happy Chanukah!

the shamash can actually be anywhere as long as it is distinctly separated from the others so as not to be confused with them, to an uninformed observer it appears to be the most significant candle but in fact has the least significance. the others must be aligned, though authorities vary on whether something like a semi circle is ok.

the 7 candle menorah is not for chanukah, but is the original menorah used in the time of the temples, it is also the symbol of the israeli knesset

On the eight night the menorah is blue and orange. Because we save the best for the last night -
