I know what you're thinking. Such a matchup as this could occur only in the Occult Heroes/Gods Bracket of the DC/Indie conference.

Savor it. For how you vote will determine the state of your soul.

How He Came to Be:Did the consciousness of living things create the Endless, or does it arise from the Endless? This is unknown, and perhaps unknowable. How He Came to Be:He was summoned to Earth by Merlin himself, but the great wizard could not control him, so he bound him in essence to the person of Jason Blood, an Arthurian knight. Song I Think Of:"#9 Dream"Song I Think Of:"Demons"
Supernatural Powers:This guy is the master of all dreams, and every creature dreaming is subservient to him. When you can manipulate dreams you can manipulate reality, making this guy nearly omnipotent. You know, I hate power creep. Every hero with powers just gets more powerful as time passes. But this guy… . You know Superman? Well, Superman's like a feather on this guy's breath. But it's not power creep. He came this way. He also appears differently to different beings from different cultures, but that's less a power than simply his nature.Supernatural Powers:The dude is a demon, with all the inherent advantages of demonic physiology, including superhuman strength, durability, and leaping. He also get sharp claws and fangs and is immune to Hellfire. And oh, yeah, he's not only quick healing, he's immortal. His demonic mind gives him enhanced sensory perception and precognition. Jason Blood has magical skillz he brings to the table too.
Non-Super Abilities:He's pretty much purely supernatural.Non-Super Abilities:The Jason Blood side of the persona is a highly skilled swordsman and hand combatant.
Weaknesses:Being in the world but not of the world leaves him aloof and perhaps even confused. He doesn't get jokes, and he expresses himself in sentences that make sense to him but not necessarily anyone else. He's self-centered and not partiucarly liked.Weaknesses:He's a demon, so he's vulnerable to holy powers --- crosses, priests, and holy water. He also has a weakness toward iron, and better magicians can control him, at least for stretches.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Morpheus/Dream vs. The Demon Etrigan

Etrigan is one of my favorite guest characters-- whether it's a Batman book or Green Lantern (or, in at least one instance, Morpheus' own book), between the rhyming and the whimsical malevolence... if he's popping up in your story, it's going to be a fun one.

But Dream is endless. As a tragic hero AND near-omnipotent who still has to regularly deal with the same old constant family bullshit, Morpheus is appealing enough as a character even before you consider the fact that he actually learns and grows over the course of the series. For all of the tortured dudes in spandex that have roamed comics since Superman, actual character development is a rare, rare thing. As much as I love a funny super-powered beastie, it's Sandman by knockout.

I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. I never read Sandman, and I only have a passing familiarity with the Demon.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Morpheus/Dream vs. The Demon Etrigan

Kirby created DEMON for DC during his "fourth world" days, though i don't think there is any continuity between DEMON and FOREVER PEOPLE or NEW GODS or MIRACLE MAN. And Kirby also created a "Sandman" during his DC stint as well, though Gaiman's Sandman has very little to do with either the golden age version, or Kirby's bronze age variant.

I always loved DEMON, speaking in couplets, with a Jekyl/Hyde problem going on. But Gaiman created an entire mythology with the Endless, Sandman being only one aspect of it but the hub of that great wheel.

I have this comic! Norm Breyfogle did a great Etrigan, and a fantastically expressive Bats.

Morpheus has some hot sisters:

DEATH

DELIRIUM

DESIRE

But of course not all his sisters are hot:

DESPAIR

Was Patrick Nagel brought in to draw Desire?

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Morpheus/Dream vs. The Demon

There is a lot of variations in the depictions of "Desire"... she is often androgynous, so this is as fem and pretty as she gets. "Delirium" varies greatly as well, but they are consistent in their trippiness. Despair is painfully consistent.

Either that's his or somebody's copping him pretty intently.

Desire is neither male nor female and is referred to as "it" not :"he" or "she."

Gaiman is a terrific writer, and "Sandman" is certainly a major landmark in comics.

The only thing Etrigan has going for him is his ability to rhyme.

Julian Cope simply destroys Michael Ironside in this one.
