The Indies Occult/Fantasy Bracket of the DC conference brings us Dark Horse's champ Hellboy against the rainmaker for Top Cow Productions, Witchblade. One indie big shot goes down. Place of Birth: Hades Place of Birth: New York, NY How He Came to Be: Summoned to Earth as a demon child by those damn Nazis with nefarious intent, he's instead captured and adopted by American forces, and grows up to become an international agent that investigates the paranormal. How He Came to Be: Mortally wounded in the line of duty as a homicide detecdtive, Sara Pezzini was selected by the Witchblade to wield his power. She survives, and thrives! Base of Operations: Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense Headquarters, CO Base of Operations: Streets of New York Teams: BPRD Teams: NYPD Signature Lines: "I’d be the first to admit that I have no shortage of faults. But if I had to pick one, the one that’s gotten me into the most trouble of the years… It would be that I sometimes get angry." Signature Lines: "Innocent until proven guilty. Just got to keep repeating that to myself." Arch-Enemy: Grigori Rasputin Arch-Enemy: Ian Nottingham Sidekick(s): Abe Sapien Sidekick(s): Jake McCarthy, Danielle Baptiste Paramour(s): Liz Sherman Paramour Jake McCarthy Has Been Played By: Ron Perlman Once Played By: Yancy Butler Could Have Been Played By: Anthony Quinn Could Have Been Played By: Monica Belucci Song I Think Of: "See You in Hell" Song I Think Of: "Season of the Witch" Supernatural Powers: We got another demon here. He's got supernaturaly strength, endurance, injury resistance, and healing. Though not generally invunerable, he can't be harmed by fire and electricity, which is cool when you're in love with a pyrokinetic. He wields the Right Hand of Doom, a stone haymaker that can not only punch other beings through walls, but is also a key to unleash the end of the world, apparently. Supernatural Powers: The 'Blade mutates into different weapons (swords, hooks, claws, shields) as needed. It also gives her supa strength and jumping ability, can generate full body armor, shoot energy blasts.fire darts, pick locks, heal wounds (seriously!), animate the dead (holy crap!), and help her be an empath. It can manipulate the elements, too. Non-Super Abilities: He has an ability to understand ancient and magical languages. I guess that can just be a brain thing and not necessarily super. Unlike some other demons, he can wield holy relics instead of being vulnerable to them. Non-Super Abilities: She's a well-conditioned cop, above average in her strenth, athleticism, intelligence, fighting skills, weapons handling, tactics, and detection skillz. Weaknesses: Although he wields holy relics, holy weapons can possibly be deadly to him. He also is vulnerable to magical spells. Weaknesses: Without the 'Blade, she's just a cop (later, a private dick). More importantly, there are other mystical weapons and forces that have power over the Witchblade.

My vote is for Hellboy. I read his original limited series, and saw his two movies. Not at all familiar with Witchblade.

I don't particularly like how real-life Rasputin gets dragged into the story. He's got a great and crazy story himself, but his cool and ominous name and shady history makes him this cipher that allows him to be dragged into other stories that really distorts who he was. Voted for Hella anyway.

Image should have been drowned in a tub at its birth. It's one thing for an artist to self-publish, or ban together with other artists, in order to earn artistic freedom and then reap any rewards that may flow from their innovative expression, but it's quite another for hacks to band together to create commodities that the big commercial companies are already mass producing, just so they can own the merchandising and ancillary rights. Fuck you, Witchblade, Spawn, Youngblood, and Savage Dragon. All hail Dark Horse!
