Serial

This admission may cause Whitefolk of America to review my continuing demi-membership, but, well, I JUST now got into this. (The "This American Life" spinoff following one producer's investigation into a single, 15-year-old murder case, over many, many hours.) Like, I listened to my first episode on Christmas Eve. And, like, I've gotten into it.

As in, I've only gotten halfway through-- just finished episode 6-- and it's taken me 4-5 hours to get through it. And I'm talking about 2-2 1/4 hours of podcast so far. I keep replaying portions, phone calls, bits of testimony, evidence review, reenactments. And-- YMMV-- I dig the meta aspect and Ms. Koenig's constant, vocalized self-awareness-- it's as much the profile of monomaniacal obsession you get monomaniacally obsessed with as it is the reworking of the murder case.

Blahblahblah, I'm making like Sarah Koenig here. Anyone else up on this business?

[NOTE: I know it's over, but PLEASE mind the spoiler alerting, wouldja?]

Re: Serial

i just visited the website having never heard of it before, it looks interesting, but at the end of the day its not going to replace Ross Tucker or Football Today for my precious hour or so per weekday of podcast time.

Re: Serial

Here's the thing, though... as I understand, it's not an ongoing series. At least, if it will go on, I don't think it will continue with a particular case ad infinitum. Also, this "season" is 12 podcasts, of varying lengths-- some 25 minutes or so, some as long as an hour. So if you're not an obsessive, it's a little more bite-size than most pods.

Re: Serial

Heard the first episode, and it didn't really appeal to me. Surprised that it's become such a big deal, but I've never been accused of being a tastemaker.

Re: Serial

I'm definitely white enough to get to it at some point.

Re: Serial

Now y'see I tuned in expecting it to be an in-depth history of Cap'n Crunch ... boy was I disappointed!!
Actually, I only heard of this maybe two weeks ago and doubt it'll be something I'll pursue.

Re: Serial

I finished listening over the holiday break. By around episode 9, I felt like I knew how it might end, but it was still outrageously compelling listening. Catchy theme song, too.

Loved the serial aspect of it - where they would truly record and release one episode at a time - cause it allowed for some cool things to go down like "characters from the story" calling in to the producers independently who were around at the time of the murder, or were someone the show tried to find initially to speak with, but struck out. I got all excited when I found out we'd hear from Don or Asia McClain...

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<-KIND OF SPOILER-Y STUFF>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The podcast seems to keep growing even after its conclusion, with post-podcast interviews by the mysterious Jay being released by some online rag and a subreddit that has gone full-on DIY detective, which included forum members leaking personal info on people involved, most specifically Jay.

I found Adnan to be very engaging but I still thought he was full of shit. That said, there seemed to have been enough there to drum up reasonable doubt.

Anyone else finish Serial?

Is this what Adnan looked like in your brain?

Re: Serial

From listening, I thought he was bigger.

Not only was there a Jay interview, but there was a Jay-interview-interview.

----------------MILD SPOILER ALERT?-------------------

I do think Adnan's leaving a bunch out (the memory holes worry one). But I also have no idea how he was convicted based on that, especially considering the fact that the cell-phone timeline really DOESN'T match up with Jay's story at all. (Or how his ineffective counsel appeals fell so flat, considering her history and the representation he seems to have gotten.)

Re: Serial

I missed that interview with Vargas-Cooper. Those redditor 'sleuths' can be scary, man.

You see the interview with Urick, the prosecutor? He totally hangs his hat on the cell phone rekkids.
