For the first time, frogs have been seen giving birth to tadpoles. Most frogs lay eggs and although some species give birth to froglets, newborn tadpoles are new to science.

A 'Coke Zero' poured into a glass creates a larger and longer lasting foam head than you get from a regular Coke.
Not sure where Diet Coke falls on that particular scale.

Dude skating over the pond by us left a backpack un-

Was confusing, couldn't figure out if the company listed for a possible rebate WAS PSE&G (which I have) or some independent operating under PSE&G.

We need thermostat upgrades. Weird set-up with two
zones (one in basement and one in dining room, with
nothing upstairs). I'd like to upgrade when it's warm.

Hope your heating thing isn't too big a deal, it's so cold.

I suspect the furnace has being doing this since we moved in (17 months) though maybe not as distinctly. The flame only goes on for about 4-5 minutes, then goes off, then back on. The inbetween time is plenty for the ducts to cool so it makes it harder for the hot air to get to the other side of the house. It's usually barely noticeable, but when it's 10 degrees outside it needs that much more energy and it doesn't have it. I can't really get the house above 68 w/o the help of the oven.

So yeah, Nest seems cool so far but obviously I'm not really using it beyond a 'hey, keep the heat on!' yet. It takes some time to learn you too.

JCL and LWFS, you might want to consider using parental controls on your internet to help keep the innocent that way a little bit longer.

My partner is a fan of "Young and Restless" on CBS; I haven't a clue as to why. Well around 15 years ago, during a quiet time at the office, he decided to look up "Young and Restless" on a computer in the optical lab. I was walking by when I suddenly heard "Oh, shit." I stopped abruptly and looked over his shoulder to see a naked woman displayed on the screen as he frantically fumbled to close the browser before others saw it. Needless to say, for many years now, all of our office computers have had "controls" which greatly limit what can be viewed at work.

I know standardize testing is iffy in general as a way to educate, but I took a practice test linked and breezed through it. It seemed much like tests I took 20 years ago, just a slightly different way of thinking. I'm not sure why people are in such an uproar about getting it canceled and opting out and what not.

Apparently runoff from ice melt pellets is bad for underground electrical stuff. Last week there was a small fire happening under our street related to such. Tonight, exactly half of our electrical power went missing -- along with our heat and hot water. So we have lights and TV and stuff in the living room and lights in the bathroom, but the kitchen and bedrooms have no lights.

Oddly, our neighbors upstairs and directly alongside us haven;t lost power. But people next to them have, as have some across the street. In those cases it's also some power (but not all) lost.

Con Ed guys due at 7 am. Till then, we gotta bundle up

They come inside at this time of year so they don't freeze to death.
Supposedly the way deal with those is that you simply pluck them from wherever they are - Alive! - and toss them back outside.
It's squishing them that releases the stink and the stink is what attracts other stinkbugs.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2015

While one researcher recently found that nearly 98 percent of brown marmorated stink bugs died in the cold outside his lab, other experts expect to find no more than a 50 percent death rate over the winter. That is more than the normal 25 percent rate, but it won't rid the Mid-Atlantic of these annoying and destructive pests. They most likely snoozed through winter in warm spaces — like inside your house.

My car has had a tough time starting, then stalling out the past few weeks. I chalked it up to the cold weather, possibly "icing stalls". But the other day, it started, I drove for a while, the car stalled and I had no brakes!!
So I took it to my trusted mechanic today. It took him almost five hours to find and fix the problem. He found that some critter had made a nest in my engine (and the brake hydraulic system), then when it ran out of what looked like a large cotton ball, decided to use the insulation around some of my wires and the gasket that helps regulate air flow to the engine. You could have knitted a sweater with the material he took out.

i spent 3 hours this morning learning not to commit, or permit to be commited, acts of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harrassment.

what's ridiculous is not that i had to spend my morning doing such a thing, but that such a thing is necessary to train people to do in the first place.

invariably, during the topic of sexual harrassment, one dude asked the general question, not specifically related to sexual harrassment but clearly as a rejoinder to the appearance of creeping political correctness, "what if somebody is just easily offended by stuff..." to which, the really obvious answer is, "if somebody is offended by a thing, and and you know about it and you do it anyway, you are being an ass. don't be an ass."

this was not, sadly, the response of the instructor.

Not very exciting, but I did figure it out the next morning.

The brown thing is one of those little plugs that you use to make extra outlets out of a two receptacle outlet. I thought of it the next morning when I had to unplug the floor fan to plug in my makeup mirror. The floor fan hadn't been used all winter, so when we started needing it again, I had to unplug my makeup mirror. The third plug is the ionizer.

See? Dull. I wasn't even going to report that I figured it out

What you are experiencing is called myokimia. It is an involuntary muscle twitch (often of obicularis muscle which controls the eyelids) that comes and goes. It is generally associated with stress or fatigue. It is annoying, but not a serious problem. It will generally come and go over a period of time (up to a few weeks) and will generally resolve once the individual gets some rest or resolves the cause of their stress or anxiety.

I use to experience an intermittent twitching of my upper lid during final exams in college. I was generally getting 3-4 hours sleep a night, doing extensive amounts of reading, drinking excessive amounts of coffee, and putting far too much pressure on myself to perform well on the exams which ultimately led to the annoying problem. Once I took the last exam, had relaxed with some friends over a few drinks, and crashed until late the next morning, at which time I would generally awake to find the twitching had disappeared.

Hang in there. Myokimia is annoying, but in virtually all cases self limiting.

minimm stumbled upon the.. uh... easter bunny's pre-positioned stash of loot this morning, as he was looking in the basement for his backpack. it was right as he was about to get into the car to head off to day care, so i'm not sure how much he saw. and he didn't see all of it - just probably the few toys that were slated to be his. sigh.

i need a backstory. and a better hiding spot.

the hiding spot was rather shit, of course. but the kid sucks at looking for things. usually looking for his backpack would mean poking his head into the family room, glancing towards the couch, and declaring his search a failure. but today, i guess he decided to step up his game. he walked right past his backpack, naturally, and looked through a pile of junk in a corner that was disguising the loot.

he said as he was getting into the car that after school he wants to play with teh toys that he found. the toys will not be there, and will have been moved to someplace far away from there. i will, of course, have no knowledge of what he had seen, and only a sneaky suspicion that sometimes the easter bunny needs to put the easter basket things close to the houses that he's going to, and with three boys in the house, he didn't want to have to carry it all in on easter morning, and that he must've moved the things so that they could still be a surprise on easter.

sigh.

The day after the Jenner interview, which I had no interest in seeing - not because of Jenner, but because I could see Diane Sawyer over-emoting with overly dramatic music that would induce nausea, ESPN presented the story of Renee Richards. It was a well done account of everything that happened, and how it impacted the women's tour, with minimal drama.

Now THAT'S funny. Either that's Rachael Dolezal's chocolate lab or it's Bruce Jenner's cat.

On a separate topic -- so now that Brian Williams will apparently stay with NBC but NOT return to his previous position as news anchor, is the network still going to set aside time on their nightly news program to pimp all his daughter's acting projects or will such things be handled on a case by case basis?

weird. A lot of those internet lookup places often mention connections and it's possible you got linked up through some weird search neutral network algorithm, perhaps his information is a little more public than yours so it gave up a number for him to try to worm his way in. And he filters his scam through someone you know to make it seem more legitimate.

on the whole. i feel like maybe, just maybe, it wasn't as good as sharknado 2, because it was trying just a little too hard to out-sharknado its predecessor.

the resolution of the whole sharknado situation was a bit underwhelming, to be honest, whereas it was set up to be stinkin' awesome. it just fell a teensy bit flat. and then... then... at the very end, it may have redeemed itself with the most ridiculous set of things to possibly happen in a move in which impossibly ridiculous things happen for seemingly no reason.

speaking of parental responsibility, i watched the final hour of it while holding a sick µmmL, who, i'm certain, could be forgiven for thinking the whole thing a rather vivid fever dream.

Had Mexican for lunch at work yesterday. comes with chips and salsa side. I didn't eat the salsa. left it on my desk.

all morning I'm smelling something, realize it's the salsa cup, touch it and it starts hissing at me.

It's hard as a rock, and literally fermented overnight, oozing fermented tomato juice onto my desk.

My 4 year old grandson is staying with us for a few days (his dad's busy and my daughter is out of town on a business trip)
My wife made a grilled cheese sandwich for his breakfast. He ate part of it and said he'd eat the rest when he got home from pre-school. As he left the kitchen, he turned around, gestured to the leftover sandwich and said to me, "Don't even think about it."

When our youngest (aka the dancer) was 4, we were at the local mall when Mrs. DGW and our oldest went into one of the stores. As I went to follow them in, she tugged hard on my hand, forcing me to stop. "Dad, you can't go in there, the store is called 'Rave Girl'!"

Last night's Sabado Gigante variety show on Telemundo was their last. The show has aired for 53 years and I believe Dom Francisco has been the host since the beginning. Even though my knowledge of Spanish isn't great, I sometimes stopped by the show while channel surfing, and it always brought a smile to my face. Many famous stars were featured on the show over the years, and many, including Enrique Iglesias and Shakira, stopped by to say good-bye.
Tonight is the EMMY awards. If he, or the show, hasn't yet received some sore of lifetime achievement award, tonight is the night to make that right.

Not that I'm in the target demographic or anything for this particular show, but I find it funny when shows are feted for going off the air after a long period of time (although usually not over a half century) but I only hear of the show for the first time because of the sendoff.
Never heard of this show until maybe a week ago. And now it's gone. Oh well, won't be the first or the last time I'm out of the loop on something.

Grumpy Old Guy Alert.

Back in the day, when a cashier gave you back $3.84, they put the 84 cents in your hand and then handed you the three dollars. Sometime in the past 10 years or so, it's become common practice to hand you the three dollars then plop the 84 cents on top. The coins are more likely to fall that way than if they were safely nestled in your palm, of course.

Well, today at lunch, I took the three dollars and started to put it in my wallet. The cashier, on autopilot and probably reading a text from her girlfriend, proceeded to plop the 84 cents where my hand was just a second ago. Coins hit the linoleum and scatter. There's a missing quarter still there somewhere under a display or something.

That's because no one knows how to 'make change' anymore.
In the old days [grumpy old guy tag team alert] a sale of $6.16 where the customer handed over a 10-spot would cause the cashier to start with the change, counting out pennies first: 17, 18, 19, 20; then the nickel: 25; and then quarters: 50, 75, $7.00; and then three singles: 8, 9, $10.00 Change came first, bills came second.
Now, since everyone is simply obeying the machine that tells them it's $3.84, they do it in that order, grabbing the 3 first followed by the .84

And, yes, 'counting change' in the above fashion has been dead for a long while, but I think the pattern of coins first/bills second took a while to fade because at least the ones handing you the money were alive when it was done that way. But for those behind the register now change-then-bills never was the proper way and, besides, I think many of them get befuddled when someone actually pays with cash that I'm surprised when they actually come up with the proper amount.

the 'drop the change' thing happens to me all the time. If you hand me something, I'm gonna put it away. Don't hand me two things. (It happens the same way if they give me coins first)

But that's why I try to charge absolutely everything. (besides that it's cheaper in the sense that I get at least some buyback)

similar here. the house just to the north has been mostly vacant (though maintained) the two years we've been here. It sold last month and I briefly spotted the neighbors, who look around our age and with a kid around our kid's age so there's potential. They closed early in September and seemed like they were in and out on the weekends, but we were rarely home so haven't really come across them yet. They still don't always seem to be sleeping there either, though there was a car in the driveway this morning.

I suppose I'll meet them eventually.

I did it AT the shower, not at a separate party and the shower was at my in-laws house/backyard. But then, I'm always a fan of more parties, more cake, and more fanfare. Part of the reason was we wanted gender-neutral presents/toys/diapers and were afraid we'd only get cute little girl clothes if we told people earlier.

(The shower was 7/27. the baby arrived 8/5. I think she wanted cake too)

I feel weird about the birthday thing too. When we ordered lunch last year at work I added a slice of Tiramisu for myself and just didn't tell anyone.

It's a function of social media/millennials/world changing. I try not to get worked up that the younger* generation(some timelines have me as a millennial too) do things differently, but some of the look at me stuff seems pretty silly.

So here's how this went down:

Even the parents-to-be didn't know. Apparently the doctor gets an envelope into which he puts the sex of the baby. That envelope gets secretly transported (by Agent 99?) to a bakery. The bakery then makes a cake based on what they find in the envelope and delivers it to wherever the big reveal is going to be. The happy couple cuts the cake, and if the interior frosting is blue, it's a boy; pink, girl.

Yes, this really happens.

heh. It's like you don't watch any cheesy sitcoms. This happens all the time. Just was an episode of Awkward about it. (cue antics about the parents accidentally finding out anyway)

I've never paid for a (more than a random $30 sheet/ice cream cake) cake because I always bake it, but feels like there are better things to spend that money on just before you have a baby.

Consider this though: It's REALLY hard to not give it away as parents if you know. I was purposely telling people we didn't know because I knew I'd slip, and I still said "she" a dozen times when referring to her. I mostly covered this by saying I wanted a girl, but i would've given it away a billion times.

When Ned first started managing I just assumed that the similarity in the Ed/Ned names combined with the less than common Yost meant that they had to be related.
It was several years of never hearing of or being able to find a link before I was satisfied there was no connection.

Yeah, I woke up yesterday morning and was hit with waves of nausea/dizziness every time I turned my head. I was basically unable to get out of bed for about 70-80 minutes; between the slow start and having to take things like the subway steps a little carefully, I ended up being over an hour late to my restaurant's seasonal training/tasting day, and having to stand still and "restabilize" a few times during the day. I've got no apparent symptoms of any other kind, nor any obvious precipitating incident (head trauma, eg).

Obviously if things persist see a physician.

I used to have occasional spells of vertigo but nothing as bad as you describe.

A couple of years ago I had a very big vertigo rush, things got better, then a few days later I felt like absolute shit -- shingles. I think the vertigo was the onset of that. Shingles is chicken-pox revenge. Get it treated right away as I did and no problemo. Wait at your own risk!

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2015

There's a guy who has been doing a Fall lawn cleanup for me for several years. I sent him a note in early November saying I wanted him to do it again this year, and before Thanksgiving, as he has in the past. (we have guests each year.)
Nada.
I left him several telephone messages asking when he would be doing the lawn.
Nada.
Thanksgiving passed, and MMYF was pissed. At him. At me (for not doing it myself, "at least the front. People can see that from the road.")
So this week, I called another guy who was cleaning up the lawn next door and asked if he could do it. He said he might be able to do it late this week or early next week.
So, at 8 AM this morning my regular guy showed up and started to clean the lawn. I had to call off the second guy.

There's still a BIG pile of leafs and twigs in my driveway, waiting for the truck to come that vacuums it up.

If he had just called, it would have saved a lot of agita (not to mention yelling). But at least its almost done.

This appears to be a deal from what I can see of other restaurants, and also of supply and demand.

It's in Time Square for the ball drop, something that's a draw outside of "get off my lawn!" New Yorkers. They serve decent edible food, if nothing special, and of course no one's there for the food but it's nice to go in knowing it's not all going to be disgusting. They have an open bar. and bathrooms. and heat. And is probably a reasonable subway ride or walk back to the hotel/housing.

What's really at the heart of this (IMO) is NYC's general elitist attitude towards Olive Garden.
So rather than take the 'Don't like it then don't go' attitude, the self-appointed -- not pissed off that someone is charging those prices but that it's OG charging it and that folks are buying them up -- take the opportunity act as if they're being some sort of consumer protection service by railing against it.
Again: Don't like it, don't go, but stop acting offended if someone else does or pretending that you're being a crusader against price-gouging.

* I personally don't give a shit one way or the other about Olive Garden. I think I may have eaten there once or twice in the previous couple of decades but have no particular memories of it if so

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2015

"Disgusting" seems like a bit of an exaggeration. I've eaten at Olive Garden a number of times (probably always because someone else suggested it for a gathering of some sort) and while it's nothing special, I can't see being disgusted by some breadsticks and a bowl of spaghetti.

Of course, I guess I'm hard to disgust. I've eaten a large squid tentacle on a wooden stick (like a popsicle), a sheep's face (picking meat off the skull), an entire roasted guinea pig, and some kind of worm larvae. (This was in, respectively, Japan, South Africa, Peru, and South Africa again.)

I'm not pissed off. P.T. Barnum was right, and if suckers want to pay that kind of money for substandard food (especially compared to what's available in a reasonable walking distance from Times Square) and a limited view of the festivities, that's their business.

But yeah, I'm going to laugh at them. If that makes me elitist, so be it.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2015

Drawing on my admittedly limited experience with 'em, as far as iffy chain restaurants go, I would take Red Robin and faux-'talian Maggiano's and Carabba's over Olive Garden, but I will slot OG over, say: Cheesecake Factory/Friday's/PF Chang's/Chili's(by a small margin); Outback/Longhorn Steakhouses and Red Lobster (by a larger margin); and Cracker Barrel/Ruby Tuesday's/Applebee's (by a country fucking mile).

Applebee's is charging $25 less than The Olive Garden, in case you're looking to save some money. And you can really stretch your budget with a Times Square reservation at TGIF's --- it's half the price of The Olive's.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2015

That Brother Louie song from '73 is stuck in my head on an endless loop for about a week now. I don't know why or what triggered this. I liked the song when it was a smash hit and I was a kid first discovering pop music that the adults listened to, even though today, I wouldn't trust my Junior High School musical tastes for anything. Still, the song won't get out of my head so I sought it out on Youtube even though I have it on my PC and on some compilation CD. I imagined I'd pull up some cheesy band what with the song and The Stories being a one-hit wonder. But instead, I discovered this cool live version from the Midnight Special complete with an intro by Jose Feliciano. I also realized that even though I'd heard that song over a hundred times in my life, maybe even over two hundred times, I'd never seen that band before. They look like bona fide hard rock and rollers for that era, though I don't know anything else about that band besides their OHW. In fact, they give off a Black Crowes vibe visually and I'm saying this in a good way. Their version is funky and lends itself to some cool wah-wah guitar filling that in my opinion, isn't exploited to its fullest potential. But overall, I thought the song held up remarkably well 40 years later. As does at least one of my Junior High School musical opinions.

I did some more digging while in a Brother Louie frame of mind and then came up with this dreadful version by Bon Jovi, which includes this cheesy arrangement where they open up with the chorus. And the guitar player demonstrates -- twice -- how one can play the guitar really fast and be soulless and shit-sounding all at the same time.

I hadda go back and re-watch the Midnight Special vid a coupl'a more times to wash the stench in my mind from seeing that Bon Jovi crapper.

Out of all the insurers, GEICO has the largest book of auto insurance business in the metropolitan area so I'd bet that everybody here knows plenty of people, if unwittingly, that carry GEICO.

I'm using Penn National based on an insurance agency picking them for me when we did the mortgage insurance. property insurance? whichever insurance. bundled* together with auto. I trust that she probably shopped for the best deal, but it might be time to research it again. Was in two accidents in 2015, neither my fault in the least, but if someone's cosmically out to get me (I see you Chase Utley) then I should make sure i'm insured well.

I'm all in down the Youtube rabbit hole and I came up with this curio, also from the Summer of Ya Gotta Believe, featuring Grand Funk in a "we're on top of the world" mini-documentary. Rod Stewart called Grand Funk purveyors of white trash music. Or white trash musicians. Or the band that appealed to white trash. I don't remember. But it was some line with Grand Funk and white trash. Whatever. They did sell out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles once did and that's a natural fact.

The driver that hit MK is insured by Geico, so we've been dealing with them. Fortunately D-Dad is a professional negotiator, so they haven't given us too much crap (so far) about covering the kid's medical expenses, etc.

Thinking about it, American Band reminds me of middle school dances.
Smoke and Stairway were always on the menu too. I went to a very
white school district, that was our dance music played by a live band.

We left Geico (and a multi-generation policy) about a year ago for Nationwide, who just last week tried to hit us with a sudden, large, and seemingly arbitrary bump in the premium rates. Clearly they have a competitive rate to hook you in and then the rate they stick you with a year later. Going back to Geico starting the first of this month.
