The Katzenjammer Kids, a comic strip that originated in 1897, is still in syndication with new strips. It's the only comic feature that's been running longer than Gasoline Alley.

I just realized, or had forgotten, their names are Gwendolyn and Cecily, a reference to the Gwendolen and Cecily who are the female romantic interest characters in The Importance of Being Earnest. Tom Stoppard also put a Gwendolen and Cecily in his play Travesties, which is full of Earnest references.

yeah, Wiki says birds were always around but recurringly Woodstock showed up in the late 60s and didn't get his name until after that. (And switched genders)

That's the thing with CBS shows, isn't it? It's like, you hear about a new show there, and it sounds either retread-procedural half-terrible or whole-kit-and-caboodle Chuck Lorre-ble. Then you look up five years later, and it's 100 episodes. A surplus of hospital rooms and nursing-home lounges with lost remote controls, maybe?

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

Debbie Harry tells a story.

Before she was famous, she was on her way home from a club one rainy night in New York.

“It was two or three in the morning and I couldn’t find a cab. A car kept coming round and offering me a ride, so I accepted. Once in the car I noticed there were no door handles on the inside, which made me wary. I don’t know how, but I managed to put my hand through the window and open the door from the outside.”

The driver swerved to try to stop her escaping, but that gave her the momentum to throw herself out of the moving car. She thought no more of it until years later, when she saw the driver on the news. It was Ted Bundy, the serial killer who eventually confessed to murdering at least 30 women. “I always say my instincts saved me.”

"Making Love Out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, and pretty much all of Meat Loaf's Bat Out of the Hell songs are the creations of the same songwriter/producer, Jim Steinman. Listening to them makes it quite obvious, but I hadn't known it was the same guy behind them all. Steinman must have a deep fondness for over-the-top dramatics.

One signature Steinman song you're leaving out, but you'll say, "oh, yeah, sure" as soon as I mention it: Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now."

Well, yes and no. In the '50's there was a revival of Threepenny Opera with Lotte Lenya reprising her role from the original Berlin production. Not sure how it happened but her name made it into the song via that production and Bobby Darin sung that verse. The way the song ends in a more faithful translation of Bertolt Brecht:

And the ghastly fire in Soho,
Seven children at a go-
In the crowd stands Mack the knife, but
He’s not asked and doesn’t know.
And the child bride in her nightie,
Whose assailant’s still at large
Violated in her slumbers-
Mackie how much did you charge?

That makes Mack the Knife into an arsonist and rapist and not the swingin' ladies man portrayed in the Bobby Darin version.

Jawn Bawn Jovi was in Scandal.

"Love's Got a Line on You" as I knew it:
[youtube:44xmkyoo]x9zaHWQSyA8[/youtube:44xmkyoo]

Original version of "Love's Got a Line on You," all Bon Jovified:
[youtube:44xmkyoo]Qzl_bUasVIo[/youtube:44xmkyoo]

You know for a minor figure, Patty Smyth being able to claim (1) JBJ was originally her sideman, (2) she turned down the chance to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen, and (3) she's somehow managed to stay married to John McEnroe for 18 years... is some kind of legacy. That's three giant-but-freaky figures to be associated with.

Yeah that's right. And how about this-- the guy who plays tbe frat jock Rod in BREAKING AWAY is the same guy who plays coked-up businessman Ellis in DIE HARD.

How about that, Boobie?

That makes sense. I'm more surprised that Mookie is apparently the only man of color on the 1976 USC baseball team.

Just got a tweet that the champagne is on ice in Cincy. What I didn't
know until NOW!!! was that it's customary for the home team to procure
the bubbly for such occasions.

Fascinating. I wonder if by some quirk of scheduling, a non-contending team has ever had to host more than one opposing team's clinching celebration.

My friends wonder why I'm posting all the time—what can I say?
I won't justify the time I fritter away
My wife tells me I need help, but I know that I'm right... so right
Where else would I go to talk about the Papelbon fight?

When they insist that I'm being remiss
I tell them this
That I'm furious with LWFS
I let my foul language fly, then I tell them why

BECAUSE HIS PISS!
His piss is on my list
BECAUSE HIS PISS!
His piss is on my list
Because his piss is my list — and it's leading to strife!
BECAUSE HIS PISS!
His piss is on my list
BECAUSE HIS PISS!
His piss is such a dis!
His piss has gone amiss — and it's scaring my wife!

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

I just read about the story of Walla Tonka, the baseball player who played out the season under a death sentence (literally).

On July 13, 1899, Walla Tonka, a 24-year-old full-blooded Choctaw aboriginal and outstanding baseball player from Eagle County in the Indian
Territories, is executed at the Alikchi courthouse in the Choctaw nation.

Considered a “five-star” player and a star on his tribe’s touring team, Tonka (also known as William Goings) is allowed to tour the country
with the team while under sentence of death.

Convicted in the summer of 1897 of murdering his uncle Lampson Young, Tonka is sentenced to death by a tribal judge ... the judge’s August execution date “greatly perturbs” the local sporting crowd, coming as it does in the middle of the baseball season.

Yielding to public sentiment, the judge delays the date of Tonka’s execution until the end of the season ... Tonka’s sentence is postponed until April 1898, and then again until February 1899 ... having given his word to return for his execution, he is allowed to play in both home and road games

The execution did not go well:

On the morning of July 13, Tonka comes alone to the place of his execution ... led to an open casket with a quilt in
front of it, his shirt is removed and a target is painted over his heart.

According to reports, Sheriff Watson takes four paces back and shoots, and misses, hitting Tonka in the abdomen.
Tonka withers in pain for up to an hour (some reports say he was shot three more times and still lived) ... water
is then poured down his throat in an attempt to hasten death by strangulation.
